They were brothers, who had grown up near Thessaloniki, and they therefore knew Slavonic as well as Greek. Cyril had invented a new alphabet that was better suited to the Sla- vonic languages than the Greek or the Latin. Using this alphabet, the missionaries were able to put across the Bible and other sacramental texts in a form that could be understood by the Slavonic tribes, even though this differed considerably from their everyday speech. This form of language is known today as “Old Church Slavonic”. It is closely related to the modern Slavonic languages, especially Bulgarian. Cyril and Methodius are still honoured in Bulgaria as the “apostles of the Slavs”. Their disciples, who sought refuge in the Bulgarian Empire when the mission came to a violent end, created centres of learning there, in which they carried on the Slavonic written cultural tradition begun by Cyril and Methodius. Both young people and adults were taught in these schools, although it would be an anachronism to speak of an early form of adult education. Nonetheless, the part that Cyril and Methodius still play in the Bulgarian consciousness makes them appropriate patrons of adult education and Lifelong learning in that country. The cover picture shows the monument to the two saints outside the National Library in Sofia. In their hands they are holding a roll with the Glagolitic alphabet created by Cyril. The aim of the project is to create a self-sustaining template for production that will feature different areas of radical political history and practice each year, and that will hopefully be taken on by a dif- ferent group from a rotating network of activists. Last year’s edition of the Wasp, with its coverage of the hidden history of the contributions of anarchists and other radicals to both the avant-garde and mainstream arts around the world, with its cover by London street artist Stik, proved something of a success. So, we hope to do even better this year with this anti- fascist history edition, which features numerous individuals and collective actions and events from across the whole history of the resistance to ultra-nationalism, fascism and Nazism; wher- ever and when ever it has raised its ugly head. Koenker Associate Professor Zsuzsa Gille Associate Professor Behrooz Ghamari-Tabrizi Professor Peter Fritzsche Abstract “Occult Communism” explores the unlikely infusion of state-sponsored spiritualism into the materialist ideology of Bulgarian late communism. In the 1970s, Minister of Culture Lyudmila Zhivkova initiated grandiose state programs to inject the “occult” into Bulgaria’s national culture, art, science and even political philosophy. Inspired by her Eastern religious beliefs, she sought to ‘breed’ a nation of “all-round and harmoniously developed individuals,” devoted to spiritual self-perfection, who would ultimately “work, live and create according to the laws of beauty.” My project focuses on how Zhivkova translated her religio-philosophical worldview into state policies. I examine three realms of what I have termed “occult communism:” Zhivkova’s domestic and international cultural initiatives; occult religiosity and the mystical movement known as the White Brotherhood; and occult science as embodied by the Scientific Institute of Suggestology. I contend that as quixotic as Zhivkova’s vision was, her policies contributed to the liberalization of art and culture in a period that has long been associated exclusively with stagnation and decay.

The support targeted to strengthen the Danube Environmental Forum (DEF) as umbrella organization, to enhance the network and its members’ capabilities to respond to transboundary pollution issues with a focus on nutrient reduction, and to empower the network to respond to current priority issues as well as those that may arise in the future. Phase 1 of DRP focused on making the DEF network fully operational and to increase the capacities for the DEF initiatives to support nutrient reduction and ecosystem management. Phase 2 of DRP supported primarily specific activities implemented by the sustainable functioning network. Through the enhanced capacity of the member organizations and the coordinated approach by the DEF Board and Secretariat, the networks is able to involve local stakeholders, partners and other NGOs in cooperative initiatives on national and sub-basin level.
