17Th World Championships _______________________________________________________________________________________ 19th U21 Shore Angling World Championship 28th U16 Shore Angling World Championship Latina 12 - 19 October 2019 Latina Sabaudia Terracina 19th U21 Shore Angling World Championship 28th U16 Shore Angling World Championship Latina 12 - 19 October 2019 On my name and on behalf of the Italian Federation of Sport Fishing and Underwater Activities, which I am honoured to chair, I am delighted to express my greetings to all participants at this Shore Angling World Championships U16 and U21, which are going to be held from 12 to 17 October in Latium, in an area rich of history and, in particular, in the Province of Latina, which vaunts a cultural, touristic and sports sea tradition. I am sure that the young athletes of all attending Nations, which will meet together with the managers, the technicians and the stewards, will join the opportunity of appreciating the beauties of these places and the hospitality of all those who have expressed all their efforts for organizing this big sport fishing event. So, I am especially delighted to extend my sincere welcoming to all of you in the esprit of living together some quite days. Finally, I wish to thank the FIPSAS Provincial division of Latina, that assumed the task as organizing Committee of these World Championships, the Mayors of the towns that are hosting our young anglers, the political, religious and administrative authorities and all journalists of local and national media for their support. Last but not least, I would like to remark that the pivot of this international competition is the participation of young athletes. This is the reason why I wish to remind to all participants, besides wishing them the best sport successes in the forthcoming competitions, that whatever will be the final result, a great award will be having participated at a such prestigious sports event. Prof. Ugo Matteoli FIPSAS President 2 19th U21 Shore Angling World Championship 28th U16 Shore Angling World Championship Latina 12 - 19 October 2019 I am very pleased to present the U16 and U21 Shore Angling Championships to be held in the municipalities of Terracina, Sabaudia and Latina. I am sure that the local areas, the sea and the organisation will live up to our expectations and those of all participants. Shore Angling is a very popular sport in Italy, as it allows the athletes to be in close contact with the surrounding natural environment, beaches and fish fauna. Shore Angling is also a sport much loved by young people, and the healthy interest that it arouses in them must certainly be cultivated and stimulated. Competitiveness also gives young people the opportunity to engage with their peers both from a sporting and human point of view, and these events truly enhance values such as socialization and sharing. These are the reasons why I firmly believe in them and I keenly welcomed the project to host this important Championship in the Province of Latina. I would like to thank the local authorities and the FIPSAS local structures for their organisational support, which is essential for the success of the event. I look forward to October because the days spent with our young people provide the best boost of enthusiasm that we leaders can rely on in order to continue to work in the best interest of the Federation. Maurizio Natucci President of Surface Fishing Sector 3 19th U21 Shore Angling World Championship 28th U16 Shore Angling World Championship Latina 12 - 19 October 2019 The "World Fishing Championship - Latina 2019" Committee, in collaboration with F.I.P.S.A.S. is pleased to invite your Federation to participate in the 19th U21 Shore Angling World Championship and the 28th U16 Shore Angling World Championship to be held from 12 to 19 October 2019 in the province of Latina on the beaches of Sabaudia, Terracina and Latina. SABAUDIA Sabaudia, a town founded in 1934 together with the Park, is located on the shores of Lake Paola in the heart of the Circeo National Park. The town centre showcases interesting architectural aspects that make it one of the best examples of Italian rationalist architecture. Particularly worth visiting is the royal chapel commissioned by Queen Margaret following the death of her husband Umberto I, to whom it was dedicated, and which was originally located inside the Palazzo Margarita in Rome. The long coastal strip, made up of dunes and beaches, represents one of the most visited and delicate environments of the entire Park area. The dunes consist of a set of very interesting ecosystems, which often feature lively blooms. To preserve this environment, it is necessary to respect it avoiding damage and using the appropriate wooden walkways to access the beach. The wetlands are the largest reservoir of biological diversity in the Circeo National Park, with the presence of over 250 species of birds, as well as fish, amphibians, reptiles, mammals. For this reason, they have been included in the list of 'wetlands of international interest' (Ramsar). The State Forest of Circeo is the last strip of the ancient forest of Terracina, reclaimed in the 30s. It contains an extreme variety of habitats, including the periodically flooded "Swimming Pools" which, in addition to hosting very special species, recreate the charm of the swamp. In the seventies, due to its historical and environmental significance, it was declared a "Biosphere Reserve" - UNESCO MAB programme. 4 19th U21 Shore Angling World Championship 28th U16 Shore Angling World Championship Latina 12 - 19 October 2019 TERRACINA Terracina, is located in the countryside of the Pontine marshes at the southern edge of the plain itself, south of the promontory of Circeo, near the mouth of the river Amaseno, on the Tyrrhenian coast (Gulf of Gaeta). The town runs from an extension of Monte Sant'Angelo, where the town centre lies, up to the Circe promenade. The cliff of Pisco Montano clearly marks the southern boundary of the town’s residential area. 5 19th U21 Shore Angling World Championship 28th U16 Shore Angling World Championship Latina 12 - 19 October 2019 LATINA Latina is located in the heart of the Pontine Marshes, in a largely flat territory. The city centre is located a few kilometres (about seven) from the Tyrrhenian Sea along Via del Lido up to Latina-Lido, the city’s sea area, with its promenade and the beaches of Capoportiere, Foce Verde and Rio Martino. It is about 15/20 km from the Lepini mountains. Part of its territory is part of the protected areas of the Circeo National Park, where Lake Fogliano is also located, marking upper northern strip. 6 19th U21 Shore Angling World Championship 28th U16 Shore Angling World Championship Latina 12 - 19 October 2019 FACILITIES The facilities where accommodation will be provided for the participating delegations include: • Le Palme Hotel; • Gioiello Hotel; • Casinò Hotel; for a total of 102 rooms. All facilities are located in the town of Sabaudia. By train You can reach Sabaudia by train using the railway line that connects Roma Termini to Naples, stopping at Priverno Fossanova and then continuing by bus to Sabaudia. By car You can reach Sabaudia: • from Rome along route SR 148 Pontina towards Terracina and then continuing on Migliara 53; • from all over Italy on the motorway to Frosinone, passing through Priverno, taking route SP Marittima II and then continuing on Migliara 53. 8 19th U21 Shore Angling World Championship 28th U16 Shore Angling World Championship Latina 12 - 19 October 2019 Sabaudia, whose coasts are characterised by white sand dunes and Mediterranean scrubland, against the background of which stands the awesome profile of Circeo Mountain. The long beaches continue north to Latina, featuring outlets that connect the sea to the coastal lakes surrounded by forests and swamps, making up the very heart of the National Park of Circeo. The Circeo National Park lies in a territory that was deeply shaped by human activity, and represents one of the few remaining patches of plain wetland habitat in Central Italy. In this study distribution and few demographic information of the amphibians in the Park were provided. Seven species and 25 bibliographic and 84 original breeding sites were recorded, and population size estimations were carried out for a population of these three species: Pelophylax sinkl esculentus, Bufo balearicus and Rana dalmatina. For the studied populations of pool frog and green toad the oper- ational sex ratio and the demographic effective population size was also estimated. For Rana dalmatina, which is strictly associated to forest environment, a positive and significant correlation between the number of egg clutches and maxi- mum depth of the swamps was found. The State plain forest is the most important habitat for amphibians’ conservation in the park. The occurrence of dangerous alien species was investigated and they are evaluated as the major threat for amphibians in the park, especially the crayfish Procambarus clarkii in the State plain forest.

Ormai l’estate lascia lentamente il passo all’autunno e questo dal punto di vista podistico significa essere nel pieno della preparazione delle maratone che si svolgeranno verso fine anno tra cui Firenze e Latina, da sempre appuntamenti imperdibili per molti atleti Orange. Il mese di settembre è stato caratterizzato da alcune classiche sulle distanze più brevi, in particolare menzioniamo la Millennium Running di Palombara Sabina e la Corricolonna, due gare che hanno visto la massiccia presenza dei colori orange; un’altra gara che ha destato parecchio interesse è stata la Rome Half Marathon Via Pacis, alla sua prima edizione: una mezza maratona che ha attraversato Roma incontrando lungo il suo percorso i più bei monumenti della Capitale. Da segnalare anche gli appuntamenti su pista che si sono svolti in questo mese e che hanno visto risultati di rilievo per i nostri atleti: in particolare gli Open Master e il Mennea Day che si sono svolti allo Stadio Nando Martellini alle Terme di Caracalla e la seconda prova Regionale open J/P/S/M svoltasi allo Stadio P. Giannattasio di Ostia. In questo mese di settembre abbiamo un unico resoconto da proporvi: “Il viaggio dei Giganti” del nostro Marco Stravato. Un racconto emozionante e coinvolgente che racchiude oltre 333 chilometri e quasi trentamila metri di dislivello positivo; un viaggio lungo quasi sette giorni sui sentieri della Valle d’Aosta sulle orme del mitico e leggendario “Tor de Geants”.

    Coastal Cities and their Sustainable Future III 95 BIOREGIONAL APPROACH TO INTEGRATING TRANSPORT NETWORKS AND NATURAL AREAS IN THE LAZIO REGION COASTAL AREA, ITALY ALBERTO BUDONI & VALERIO MAZZESCHI La Sapienza University of Rome, Italy ABSTRACT “Bioregion”, a term coined by Peter Berg in 1977, was improved by Alberto Magnaghi, who defined it as the space for developing new relationships of coexistence between the inhabitants–producers and the territory of a region. Therefore, bioregion is a tool for rethinking regional planning, no longer as the sum of different sectorial planning exercises, but as a “transdisciplinary planning” approach that considers all of a territory’s aspects. This approach is related to EU policies for Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) and the protection of maritime and coastal areas. This paper presents a case study on the coastal areas of the Lazio region of Italy which have a great many natural areas but which is also one of the most anthropized areas in the region. Indeed, due to the rising population, many interventions in the coastal areas resulted in the transformation of natural zones into urban areas. One effect has been urban sprawl and the related lack of capillarity of the public transport network. The result was that many ecosystems and natural areas were fragmented, losing their biodiversity. With a view to reconnecting these fragmented areas, this paper discusses a new regional scenario based on enhancing the linkages between land transport networks and the maritime gateway. In this scenario, railway corridors would stimulate a new organisation for the region’s settlements by representing not only the network connecting the bioregion’s cities and towns but also the cornerstones for the environmental regeneration of the coastal areas.

Here, we report on some aspects of the invasion biology of this pathogen in Italian coastal pinewoods, and on its interaction with native (EU) Heterobasidion populations. Spores of Heterobasidion were sampled using woody traps in pine stands along 280 km of coast around Rome. DNA of single-spore colonies was characterized by two sets of nuclear and one set of mitochondrial taxon-specific polymerase chain reaction primers. NA spores were found not only in a single site, but in many locations over a wide geographic area. Invasion occurred at an estimated rate of 1.3 km/year through invasion corridors provided by single trees, and not necessarily by sizable patches of forests. Within the 100-km long range of expansion, the NA taxon was dominant in all pure pine stands.

Strada Piscinara destra 2, 04100 Latina, Italy; e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT The variety of environments that characterizes the Circeo National Park must also take into account, in addition to the terrestrial natural values that are present, even the importance of marine and coastal stretches that currently do not benefit from a similar regime of protection, preserving instead important elements of wealth for marine biodiversity. This added value is represented in a particular way by the presence of Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile, 1813, habitat of Community interest. The proposal of the Plan of the Park to extend to the sea The Circeo National Park would help to protect and enhance areas for the most part already included in the Natura 2000 network that could be handled in a unified manner by the Park providing for their conservation through various management interventions. Another proposal involves, instead of creating a true marine protected area, encompassing the whole Posidonia meadows present both in the northern section of the coast and in the south, between San Felice and Terracina and, hopefully also the stretch of sea that surrounds the island of Zannone (therefore including the SPAs area regarding the Pontine Archipelago).
