Argulus ambystoma, a New Species Parasitic on the Salamander Ambystoma dumerilii from Mexico (Crustacea: Branchiura: Argulidae)1 WILLIAM J. POLY2, Department of Zoology, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL 62901-6501 ABSTRACT. A new species of Argulus is described based on 18 specimens taken from the salamander ("achoque" or "ajolote") Ambystoma dumerilii Duges, collected in Lake Patzcuaro, Michoacan, Mexico. Diagnostic characters include the shape of the respiratory areas, number of sclerites in suction cup rods, and structures on the legs of males. Females are heavily stippled, whereas males have a very distinctive pigment pattern consisting of abundant melanophores covering the testes dors ally and two dark, inverted triangular patches on the carapace dorsally. The new species is similar to the North American species, A versicolor,A. americanus, A. maculosus, and A diversus. A single, dorsal pore was observed on each caudal ramus using scanning electron microscopy; these pores have not been reported previously in the Branchiura. Bothriocephalus acheilognathi is recorded in 234 fish, 1 amphibian, 3 reptile and 3 bird species. Most common hosts are Cyprinus carpio and Ctenopharyngodon idella. RESUMEN El género Chirostoma es un grupo de peces endémicos de la Mesa Central de México, cuya diversificación se explica tanto por procesos de especiación alopátrica en ambientes lóticos, como por una diversificación intralacustre debida a especiación simpátrica. Tratando de corroborar la segunda hipótesis en especies de Chirostoma en Pátzcuaro, se evaluaron diferencias morfométricas de 11 piezas osteológicas de la región mandibular de C. attenuatum, C. grandocule, C. estor y C. patzcuaro. Con objeto de identificar los taxones se realizó un análisis de agrupación aplicando distancias euclidianas, así como un análisis de componentes principales sobre la matriz de varianza-covarianza. -

Piller1, John Lyons3, Norman Mercado-Silva4, and Martina Medina-Nava5 The silverside fish tribe Menidiini (Teleostei: Atherinopsidae) consists of four genera, Menidia, Labidesthes, Poblana, and Chirostoma, that are distributed along the Atlantic coast of North America, throughout the Gulf of Me´xico, insular United States, and the Mesa Central of Me´xico. It has been suggested that Chirostoma, Poblana, and Menidia should be recognized as a single genus under the nominal Menidia. To test this hypothesis, phylogenetic relationships within the tribe Menidiini were assessed using the mitochondrially encoded ND2 gene. Monophyly of the Menidiini tribe was supported. Results also failed to support monophyly for the genera Menidia and Chirostoma as currently recognized. A central Mexican clade, inclusive of Chirostoma and Poblana, was recovered as monophyletic and strongly supported. Relationships within the Mesa Central clade support a previously recognized ‘‘humboldtianum’’ clade and the paraphyly of Chirostoma with respect to Poblana. This situation stands true for Mexican freshwater fishes and their corresponding ecosystems. In this respect, Mexico has a long history of environmental policy, and seeking to protect its biodiversity, the country has carried out a series of important initiatives in response to the adoption of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), such as the creation of the National Biodiversity Commission in 1992, the elaboration of the National Biodiversity Strategy, regional action plans, as well as conservation strategies for terrestrial and marine species and environments, but unfortunately, little has been done in relation to the conservation of freshwater species, nor the ecosystems they live in. With this in mind, the main aim of this study is to analyze the spatial distribution of the Freshwater Fishes of Mexico, their conservation status, and to develop a conservation strategy for species with imminent risk of extinction.
