Heinz Jolles-Anhang Heinz Jolles Für das Fach Klavier ging ich nicht zu Georg Bertram. Es mag die Scheu gewesen sein, ihn durch seine voraussehbare Ablehnung in Verlegenheit zu bringen. So hat dieser nicht bloß in seiner Güte einzigartige Musiker nur dies eine so entscheidende Mal in mein Leben eingegriffen. Auch Vater Ullmann drängte mich nicht, es bei Bertram zu versuchen, obwohl es seinerzeit sein erster Vorschlag war. Herr Ullmann schenkte mir nicht nur das zweieinhalbjährige Studium in Berlin, sondern dazu auch die Erlaubnis, über alle Einzelheiten selbst zu entscheiden – kurzum: Er schenkte mir Freiheit! So legt mich das freundliche Schicksal einem anderen Mann in die Hände, dem jungen und erstes Aufsehen erregenden Pianisten Heinz Jolles. 1 Sohn wohlhabender Eltern, in weiträumiger Wohnung lebend, nimmt er mich vom ersten Augenblick an durch seine Jugendlichkeit, seine heitere Offenheit, seine sprühende Intelligenz, über alles aber durch seine tiefe Einsicht in das Wesen der Musik ein. Mit „sanfter Gewalt“ (dies Wort von Stifter wird mein ganzes Leben weiter lenken) gelingt es ihm, mich zu systematischerem Üben zu bewegen. Er ist der erste, der den Sinn für das Atmen der Musik in mir weckt, jenes Element allen Lebens und aller Künste, das auch ein Hauptthema dieses Buches ist. Er lehrt mich, daß die Arbeit nicht getan ist, wenn man die vorgeschriebenen Töne gleichmäßig im rechten Tempo und in der rechten Lautstärke, auch noch nicht, wenn man sie mit einiger Wärme, Leidenschaftlichkeit und von vermeintlichem Sinn erfüllt spielen kann. Da beginne erst die eigentliche Arbeit. Nun heiße es, den einmal buchstabierten „Text“ auch zu „lesen“! Die Musik sei der Lebensatem, den der Adam von der Decke der Sixtinischen Kapelle Michelangelos durch die kaum stattfindende Berührung des Gottesfingers empfange. Mir leiht Jolles durch Kommas, Haken, einzelne Wörter seiner Hand beispielsweise in der für solcherlei Hexenkünste besonders geeigneten Es-Dur-Sonate op. 31,1 von Beethoven seinen deutenden Finger. Die allwöchentliche Lektion von einer Dreiviertelstunde wächst sich dabei allmählich zu zweieinhalb Stunden aus. Jolles füllt sie aus und erfüllt sie, indem er vieles mir bis dahin Unbekannte vorspielt und deutet und über dessen Form und Gehalt spricht. Manches Mozart-Klavierkonzert spielt er mit mir zusammen an zwei Flügeln, er als Meister den Solopart, ich nun als Lehrling den des Orchesters. So sehr Heinz Jolles mein Bewußtsein vom Wesen der Musik vertiefte, so sehr er auch strengeres Üben forderte, so sehr spürte ich doch, daß ich fürs bloße Klavierspiel einer härteren Zucht bedurfte. Aus den Gesprächen darüber mit Max Marschalk folgte, daß ich zusätzlich rein technisch ausgerichteten Klavierunterricht nahm. With the exception of one pocket diary from 1938, the Archive contains no material prior to his arrival in Britain at the end of that year. After his release from internment in 1941, Keller divided himself between musical and psychoanalytical studies. As a violinist, he gained the LRAM teacher’s diploma in April 1943, and was relatively active as an orchestral and chamber-music player. As a writer, however, his principal concern in the first half of the decade was not music, but psychoanalysis. Although the majority of the musical writings listed below are undated, those which are probably from this earlier period are all concerned with the psychology of music. Similarly, the short stories, poems and aphorisms show their author’s interest in psychology. Keller’s notes and reading-lists from this period indicate an exhaustive study of Freudian literature and, from his correspondence with Margaret Phillips, it appears that he did have thoughts of becoming a professional analyst. At he beginning of 1946, however, there was a decisive change in the focus of his work, when music began to replace psychology as his principal subject. It is possible that his first (accidental) hearing of Britten’s Peter Grimes played an important part in this change, and Britten’s music is the subject of several early articles.
