    Atatürk Üniversitesi Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü Dergisi 2011 15 (2): 133-145 The Legacy of Communist Idealism Contested in Chicken Soup with Barley by Arnold Wesker: Political Imperative upon the Personal and Subverted Binary Opposites Erdinç PARLAK (*) Abstract: A dramatic dismantling will surely show that Arnold Wesker’s early plays represent the most amiable contestation of the New Left and the new conditions with the surprising yet desired success of the Labour. In early post-war years, Britons anachronistically hold the myth of the long Edwardian summer and thus reconnect with peace after the Great Wars. Unfortunately, though, the repressed memories of Wars haunt the writings and the aura of the age. That’s why in Wesker’s accounts, especially in his early corpus, Wars work double shift reminding us the hopes of the new generation and their disillusionment after the failure of the Labour. With this background in mind, our study tries to enlarge the theme of communist idealism and disappointment contested in Wesker’s Chicken Soup with Barley. In this play, an angry young man through and through and a representative playwright of the first wave in post-war British drama, Arnold Wesker poignantly shows how politics works as an imperative upon the private and the personal and it is also the sexual politics that Wesker contests and subverts. These two issues further serve for his handling of ethnicity (Anglo-Jewry), class (proletariat) and gender (binary opposition).     Journal of Social Justice, Vol. 9, 2019 (© 2019) ISSN: 2164-7100 Looking Left at Antisemitism Spencer Sunshine* The question of antisemitism inside of the Left—referred to as “left antisemitism”—is a stubborn and persistent problem. And while the Right exaggerates both its depth and scope, the Left has repeatedly refused to face the issue. It is entangled in scandals about antisemitism at an increasing rate. On the Western Left, some antisemitism manifests in the form of conspiracy theories, but there is also a hegemonic refusal to acknowledge antisemitism’s existence and presence. This, in turn, is part of a larger refusal to deal with Jewish issues in general, or to engage with the Jewish community as a real entity. Debates around left antisemitism have risen in tandem with the spread of anti-Zionism inside of the Left, especially since the Second Intifada. Anti-Zionism is not, by itself, antisemitism. One can call for the Right of Return, as well as dissolving Israel as a Jewish state, without being antisemitic. But there is a Venn diagram between anti- Zionism and antisemitism, and the overlap is both significant and has many shades of grey to it. One of the main reasons the Left can’t acknowledge problems with antisemitism is that Jews persistently trouble categories, and the Left would have to rethink many things—including how it approaches anti- imperialism, nationalism of the oppressed, anti-Zionism, identity politics, populism, conspiracy theories, and critiques of finance capital—if it was to truly struggle with the question. The Left understands that white supremacy isn’t just the Ku Klux Klan and neo-Nazis, but that it is part of the fabric of society, and there is no shortcut to unstitching it.

In Russia, Austria-Hungary, Germany, and a few other countries, official figures are obtainable. In the main, however, the num- bers given are based upon estimates repeated and added to by one statistical authority after another. For the statistics given below various authorities have been consulted, among them the " Statesman's Year Book" for 1910, the English " Jewish Year Book " for 5670-71, " The Jewish Ency- clopedia," Jildische Statistik, and the Alliance Israelite Uni- verselle reports. On one side, antisemitism appears as a pressing contemporary problem, intimately connected to an intensification of hostility to Israel. Opposing accounts downplay the fact of antisemitism and tend to treat the charge as an instrumental attempt to de-legitimize criticism of Israel. I address the central relationship both conceptually and through a number of empirical case studies which lie in the disputed territory between criticism and demonization. The paper focuses on current debates in the British public sphere and in particular on the campaign to boycott Israeli academia. Sociologically the paper seeks to develop a cosmopolitan framework to confront the methodological nationalism of both Zionism and anti-Zionism. It does not assume that exaggerated hostility to Israel is caused by underlying antisemitism but it explores the possibility that antisemitism may be an effect even of some antiracist forms of anti- Zionism.

    International Roundtable on Intermarriage – Brandeis University, December 18, 2003 Jewish Out-Marriage: Mexico and Venezuela Sergio DellaPergola The Avraham Harman Institute of Contemporary Jewry The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and The Jewish People Policy Planning Institute Background This chapter deals with recent Jewish family developments in some Spanish speaking countries in the central areas of the American continent. While not the largest in size, during the second half of the 20th century these communities have represented remarkably successful examples of richly structured, attractive and resilient Jewish communities. The Latin American model of Jewish community organization developed in the context of relatively poor and highly polarized societies where social-class stratification often overlapped with differentials between the descendants of native civilizations and the descendants of settlers from Western European countries—primarily Spain. Throughout most of the 20th century the general political context of these societies was characterized by considerable concentrations of central presidential power within a state structure often formally organized in a federal format. Mexico and Venezuela featured a comparatively more stable political environment than other countries in Latin America. Mexico and Venezuela, the main focus of this paper, provide examples of Jewish populations generated by initially small international migration during the first half of the 20th century, and subsequent growth through further immigration and natural increase. Around the year 2000, the Jewish population was estimated at about 40,000 in Mexico, mostly concentrated in Mexico City, and 15,000 to 18,000 in Venezuela, mostly in Caracas. For many decades, Jews from Central and Eastern Europe constituted the preponderant element from the point of view of population size and internal power within these communities.

    The Irish Journal of Gothic and Horror Studies 17 (Autumn 2018) Ghost Stories, dir. by Andy Nyman, Jeremy Dyson (Lionsgate Films, 2018) Adapted by Jeremy Dyson and Andy Nyman from their 2010 stage play of the same name, Ghost Stories is an affectionate and self-reflexive homage to the British portmanteau-horror subgenre, and is as unabashedly melodramatic as it is deeply unsettling. The plot centres on the character Professor Goodman (played by Nyman), a parapsychologist and professional cynic who is compelled to review three unsolved cases: a night watchman encounters a poltergeist while on duty in an abandoned asylum for women; a teenage driver has an accident in the woods; and an affluent financier is haunted by the spirit of his unborn child. Male anguish bubbles under the surface and, as the cases unfold, Goodman begins to question his lack of faith in the supernatural, which, we are told, is a reaction against his strict, Jewish upbringing. Although we see very little of it, the spectre of Goodman’s childhood haunts the story like a fourth case. At the start of the film, we see a memory of his sister being violently thrown out of the family home by their father for being in a relationship with a South-Asian man. Goodman bears witness but is unable or unwilling to intervene. Not only does this flashback foreshadow the finale; it also emphasises the importance of accountability in each of the cases. Anxieties about fathers and fatherhood abound in Ghost Stories (the first case features a father consumed by the guilt he feels about not visiting his hospitalised daughter, who suffers from locked-in syndrome), while the text itself is equally haunted by its literary and cinematic ancestors.
