Epitomisch schrijven in Virgilius Grammaticus, Solinus, Fulgentius.” Vertigo, Paradox, and Thorns Epitomic Writing in Virgilius Grammaticus, Solinus, Fulgentius Paolo Felice Sacchi Proefschrift voorgelegd tot het behalen van de graad van Doctor in de Letterkunde 2020 Samenvatting/Summary Deze dissertatie benadert laatantieke epitomes vanuit een literair-theoretisch standpunt; de hermeneutische uitdaging bestaat erin om deze teksten, die gewoonlijk beschouwd worden als afgeleiden of puur functionele teksten, te lezen zonder daarbij te kijken naar de “originele tekst” waarvan ze zijn afgeleid. De dissertatie bestaat uit een inleiding en drie casestudies. In de inleiding zet ik uiteen dat de focus van deze studie niet zal liggen op epitome als een genre of een tekstuele teksttype wat moeilijk te bevatten zou zijn, zo niet methodologisch incorrect), maar wel op wat ik epitomisch schrijven noem. De drie casestudies zijn geselecteerd uit werken waarnaar slechts zelden verwezen wordt als “epitomes”: het onderliggende idee is om de blik van de analyse te verruimen en aan te tonen hoe epitomisch schrijven elke genre-afbakening kan overstijgen. De gekozen werken behoren alle drie tot de late oudheid, hoewel hun troebele chronologie inderdaad beschouwd kan worden als een resultaat van epitomisch schrijven. Virgilius Maro Grammaticus’ Epitomae en Epistolae (7e eeuw N.C.?) zijn absurdistische variaties op het genre van de grammaticale commentaar. Solinus’ Collectanea rerum memorabilium (3e-4e N.C.?) is een beschrijving van de oecumene die bol staat van de wonderlijke monstruositeiten; Fulgentius' Mythologiae zijn een “ongebreidelde”, tenminste naar moderne maatstaven, allegorische interpretatie van Grieks-Romeinse mythes. Bij de lectuur van deze drie laatantieke staaltjes proza gebruik ik concepten zoals tekstuele hechting, ondoorgrondelijkheid, verticaliteit, beweeglijkheid enz. (dit zijn op zich geherinterpreteerde en omzeggens “anamorfotische” versies van enkele populaire kritische concepten zoals nomadisme, trace enz.). Met een close reading van delen van deze werken wil deze dissertatie aantonen hoe “epitomes”, verre van statische literaire producten, bijzonder onstabiel en ongrijpbaar kunnen zijn. Door de zogenaamde “epitomische dimensie” te bestuderen als een bijzondere con-/dis-figuratie van het proces van tekstuele productie, mondt deze analyse bovendien haast onvermijdelijk uit in een problematisering van genealogie, temporaliteit en causaliteit binnen ditzelfde proces. *** The present thesis approaches late antique Latin epitomes from a literary-theoretical point of view; its hermeneutical challenge lies in reading texts traditionally considered as derivative or merely functional by paying scarce or no attention to the correspondent “original texts”. The thesis consists of an introduction and three case-studies. In the vii introduction I make clear that the focus of the dissertation will be oriented not so much on epitome as a genre or textual typology (which would actually be hard to pin down, if not methodologically incorrect), but, rather, on what I dub epitomic writing. The three case-studies are selected among works seldom referred to as “epitomes”: the underlying idea is to broaden the scope of the analysis and to show how epitomic writing can transcend any genre demarcation. All of the three works belong to late antiquity, even though their blurred chronology might be seen, indeed, as result of epitomic writing. Virgilius Maro Grammaticus’ Epitomae and Epistolae (7th c. CE?) are an absurdist variation on the genre of grammatical commentary; Solinus’ Collectanea rerum memorabilium (3rd – 4th c. CE?) is a description of the oikoumene constantly indulging in marvels monstrosities; Fulgentius' Mythologiae are an “unbridled”, at least to modern standards, allegorical interpretation of Graeco-Roman myths. These three samples of late antique prose are read by drawing on such concepts as textual suture, opacity, verticality, motility etc. (themselves a re-interpreted and, so to say, “anamorphic” version of some popular critical concepts such as nomadism, trace etc.). Through a close-reading of parts of these woks, the thesis aims to show how “epitomes”, far from being sclerotic literary products, can be extremely unstable and elusive. Moreover, the analysis ushers almost inevitably into a problematisation of genealogy, temporality, and causality in the process of textual production, by investigating what is here labelled “epitomic dimension” as a peculiar con-/ dis-figuration of this very process. viii Acknowledgments In line with the literary works here discussed, this dissertation was for a long time on the brink of non-existence. THE BEGINNINGS OF THE LITURGICAL CALENDAR (5TH CENTURY) Abstract: Creating Laterculus, Polemus Silvius, a 5th-century author, was the first to attempt to integrate the traditional Roman Julian calendar containing the pagan celebrations and various anniversaries with new Christian feasts. Laterculus, as it should be remembered, is a work that bears the features of a liturgical calendar. In addition to dates and anniversaries related to religion and the state, the calendar contains several other lists and inventories, including a list of Roman provinces, names of animals, a list of buildings and topographical features of Rome, a breviary of Roman history, a register of animal sounds and a list of weights and sizes. Therefore, Laterculus, just like a traditional Roman calendar, was also used for didactic purposes. This paper aims to refer in detail to the zoological vocabulary, specifically the register of animal names and sounds included in this source. Laterculus contains in total over 450 words divided into six groups, including 108 words in the four-legged animal section, 131 in the bird section, 11 crustaceans, 26 words for snakes, 62 words for insects and 148 for fish. The sounds of animals, which are also included in one of the lists added to this calendar and titled Voces variae animancium, are also worth mentioning. A brief discussion on the history of the Roman calendar and the liturgical calendar certainly helps to present the issue referred to in the title to its fullest extent.

Jones Chair of Supervisory Commitee: Professor Alain Gowing Department of Classics This study is about the construction of identity and self-promotion of status by means of elite education during the first and second centuries CE, a cultural and historical period termed by many as the Second Sophistic. Though the Second Sophistic has traditionally been treated as a Greek cultural movement, individual Romans also viewed engagement with a past, Greek or otherwise, as a way of displaying education and authority, and, thereby, of promoting status. Readings of the work of Quintilian, Tacitus and Pliny, first- and second-century Latin prose authors, reveal a remarkable engagement with the methodologies and motivations employed by their Greek contemporaries—Dio of Prusa, Plutarch, Lucian and Philostratus, most particularly. The first two chapters of this study illustrate and explain the centrality of Greek in the Roman educational system. The final three chapters focus on Roman displays of that acquired Greek paideia in language, literature and oratory, respectively. Along the many and complex problems with which the history of Europe in the Middle Ages―and especially the earlier period of the Middle Ages―teems is the character of the intellectual heritage transmitted to medieval men from classical and later Roman imperial times. The topic has engaged the attention of many scholars, amongst them men of the greatest eminence, so that much which fifty years ago was still dark and uncertain is now clear and beyond dispute. Yet the old notions and misconceptions die hard, especially in books approximating to the text book class. In a recently published volume on the Middle Ages intended for university freshmen there is much that is excellent and abreast of the most recent investigations; but the sections on early medieval education and scholarship seem to show that the author has never read anything on that subject later than Mullinger’s Schools of Charles the Great. The elite cultural perspective nearly always ensured that Latin authors presented the topos of self-education as a case of social embarrassment or status dissonance that needed to be resolved, with these so-called autodidacts characterised as intellectual arrivistes . But the material remains written by self-educated men and women are expressed in more personal terms, complicating any simple definition and hinting at another side. The first half of this thesis builds a theory of self-education by outlining the social structures that contributed to the phenomenon and by investigating the means and the motivation likely for the successful and practical-minded autodidact. This framework is influenced by Pierre Bourdieu, whose work on culture, class, and education integrated similar concerns within a theory of habitus . As with other alternatives to the conventional upbringing of the educated classes, attempts at self-education were inevitable but ultimately futile. An autodidact by definition missed out on the manners, gestures, and morals that came with the formal education and daily inculcation supplied by the traditional Roman household.

The Way That Our Catullus Walked: Grammar and Poetry in the Late Republic Abstract This dissertation considers the poetry of Catullus and its often express concerns with matters of language through the lens of the Roman grammatical tradition. I argue that in Latin poetry, and in Latin literature more broadly, there existed a persistent interest in discussing linguistic matters--owing in large part to an early imitation of Greek authors who engaged openly with their language--and that this interest was articulated in ways that recall the figure of the professional grammaticus and the ars grammatica, the scientific study of the Latin language. I maintain that this interest becomes particularly widespread during the final decades of the Roman Republic, and so I present Catullus as a particularly representative example of this phenomenon. In each chapter I examine Catullus' poetry with reference to a different aspect of the grammaticus' trade.   • Bede, the Reckoning of Time
    Translated Texts for Historians This series is designed to meet the needs of students of ancient and medi- eval history and others who wish to broaden their study by reading source material, but whose knowledge of Latin or Greek is not su⁄cient to allow them to do so in the original language. Many important Late Imperial and Dark Age texts are currently unavailable in translation and it is hoped that TTH will help to ¢ll this gap and to complement the secondary literature in English which already exists.
