The Junk Rig Glossary (JRG) Version 20 APR 2016 Welcome to the Junk Rig Glossary! The Junk Rig Glossary (JRG) is a Member Project of the Junk Rig Association, initiated by Bruce Weller who, as a then new member, found that he needed a junk 'dictionary’. The aim is to create a comprehensive and fully inclusive glossary of all terms pertaining to junk rig, its implementation and characteristics. It is intended to benefit all who are interested in junk rig, its history and on-going development. A goal of the JRG Project is to encourage a standard vocabulary to assist clarity of expression and understanding. Thus, where competing terms are in common use, one has generally been selected as standard (please see Glossary Conventions: Standard Versus Non-Standard Terms, below) This is in no way intended to impugn non-standard terms or those who favour them. Standard usage is voluntary, and such designations are wide open to review and change. Where possible, terminology established by Hasler and McLeod in Practical Junk Rig has been preferred. Where innovators have developed a planform and associated rigging, their terminology for innovative features is preferred. Jef Last's Zuiderzee: the Price of Progress

KINGSTONE, UNNERSITY OF WINDSOR I I Jef Last's Zuiderzee: The Price of Progress Jef Last was born in the Hague in 1898, the son of a of 1916 which finally leads the government to close off ship's captain. He attended Leiden University and the Zuiderzee, thr.ough the long hard struggle to connect studied Chinese, but while there he joined the socialist Wieringen to Holland, the closure of the Wieringermeer party, and his father promptly cut off his allowance. As and the creation of the Northwest Polder in 1930, and a result he took a variety of jobs during the 1920s, and the completion of the Afsluitdijk in 1932, to an undated in his choices we can see his future interests. His (and presumably imaginary) record-breaking storm and solidarity with the workers no doubt led him to protest flood which the great dyke successfully withstands. We gaan in op de vraag hoe een letterlijke lezing van Genesis lange tijd de interpretatie van de geschie- denis en uitkomsten van empirisch onderzoek stuurde.3 Een belangrijke rol was hierin weggelegd voor de vaak raadselachtige vondsten van gebeenten en afdrukken van planten en schelpen diep onder de grond of soms hoog in de bergen. Het verhaal van Noach en de zondvloed (Genesis 6-9) speelde hierin een sleutel- rol. Tot halverwege de zeventiende eeuw was de aandacht van geleerden die zich in dit verhaal verdiepten, vooral gefocust op de ark, daarna stond vooral de zondvloed zelf centraal en, bij implicatie, de fossilia, als stille getuigen van deze catastrofe. -

Kalmar Nyckel: Using a 17th century Dutch Pinnace to Teach Physics and More DTI 2016-2017 Ancient Inventions Terri Eros Challenges H.B. duPont Middle School, while located in a very suburban setting, serves a very diverse population. There are approximately 900 students in grades 6-8, with students almost evenly split between urban and suburban backgrounds. The academic readiness also varies greatly with relation to reading and math skills. It is not unusual to have a range of students reading all the way from a pre-primer level to those comfortable with high school text. In some cases the disparity is due to limited English proficiency. The math skills are similarly distributed with some students needing calculators for 2-digit addition while others are comfortable solving algebraic equations. To better meet student needs, our school piloted having honors classes in Science and Social Studies last year. Groupings were based on reading level for Social Studies and Math level for Science. The outcome was less than ideal for Science. At the middle school level, language skills are more important so that is now the basis of grouping for the 2016-2017 school year. In addition, our school is aiming for full inclusion. Students include those that have severe physical and/or emotional needs that interfere with their ability to interact linguistically, through either speech or writing. Despite these limitations, there is still an interest and an expectation to succeed in the Science classroom. The challenge is to incorporate the rigor of the Next Generation Science Standards, with its emphasis on student driven learning, while finding multiple access points for the students based on readiness. -

His parents were the painter Jacques Metsu (ca. 1588–1629) and the midwife Jacquemijn Garniers (ca. 1590–1651).[1] Before settling in Leiden around 1615, Metsu’s father spent some time in Gouda, earning his living as a painter of patterns for tapestry manufacturers. No work by Jacques is known, nor do paintings attributed to him appear in Leiden inventories.[2] Both of Metsu’s parents came from Southwest Flanders, but when they were still children their families moved to the Dutch Republic. When the couple wed in Leiden in 1625, neither was young and both had previously been married. Jacquemijn’s second husband, Guilliam Fermout (d. ca. 1624) from Dordrecht, had also been a painter. Jacques Metsu never knew his son, for he died eight months before Metsu was born.[3] In 1636 his widow took a fourth husband, Cornelis Bontecraey (d. 1649), an inland water skipper with sufficient means to provide well for Metsu, as well as for his half-brother and two half-sisters—all three from Jacquemijn’s first marriage. -

ARCHITECT URE I N K V A R K E N – TWO COUNTRIES - A WORLD OF CONTRAST Get to know the modern cities as well as the old wooden towns in Kvarken. During an architecture tour, you will get to know Kvarken from an architectural perspective, its history, as well as stories about people who lived and live along the coasts of the Gulf of Bothnia. Höga Kusten Umeå Vaasa Seinäjoki Kristinestad Pietarsaari/Jakobstad Kokkola Höga Kusten and Örnsköldsvik Örnsköldsvik, even called Ö-vik, is part of the High Coast and its fantastic nature. Naturum Höga Kusten - is designed by White Architects. Located in the shadow of the mighty Skuleberget. Naturum Höga kusten, is an attention- grabbing building inspired by the nature that surrounds it. Interesting geometric patterns and angular displacements give the building rich and varied expression. It is precisely the rough and anything but 90-degree feeling that characterizes nature on the High Coast. The High Coast is characterized by odd angles and variation in rhythm, scale and color. The glazed long side represents the ice. The inner concrete wall symbolizes the mountain. ArkNat – is a combination of architecture and nature. Architect students from all over Scandinavia were invited to create unique “art” that reminds of typical wind shelters in the nature. As result you will find nine fantastic creations, places to rest or to have a picknick, located along the 128 km long High coast Trail. Ting 1 – is residential building in Örnsköldsvik Ting 1 is designed by Gert Wingårdh, who was inspired by Bengt Lindström's art. -
The Five Senses in Genre Paintings of the Dutch Golden Age
The Five Senses in Genre Paintings of the Dutch Golden Age Kitsirin Kitisakon+ (Thailand) Abstract This article aims to study one of the most popular themes in 17th-Century Dutch genre paintings - the five senses - in its forms and religious interpretations. Firstly, while two means of representation were used to clearly illustrate the subject, some genre scenes could also be read on a subtle level; this effectively means that such five senses images can be interpreted somewhere between clarity and am- biguity. Secondly, three distinct religious meanings were identified in these genre paintings. Vanity was associated with the theme because the pursuit of pleasure is futile, while sin was believed to be committed via sensory organs. As for the Parable of the Prodigal Son, party scenes alluding to the five senses can be read as relating to the episode of the son having spent all his fortune. The Five Senses… | 125 Introduction In the 16th and 17th Centuries, the five senses had never been more popular as subject matter for graphic art, especially in the Low Countries. Since Nordenfalk (1985), this theme has been occasionally discussed in monographs, catalogues of specific artists, or Dutch genre painting studies. Yet, an analysis of the modes of representation of the five senses seems to have been ignored, and there is a certain lack of fresh interest in their religious interpretations. From this observa- tion, this article aims to firstly examine how the five senses were represented in the Dutch genre paintings of the Golden Age, inspect how artists narrated them; secondly, reinvestigate how they can be religiously interpreted and propose deeper meanings which go beyond realistic appearance.
