But this is an extra special time for the festival as it celebrates its 30th year. The programme has increased to 10 days in order to celebrate this milestone birthday in style with a jam-packed programme of screenings and special guest events. The festival launches with the Northern Ireland Premiere of Battle Of The Sexes – the true story of the famous tennis match between women’s world champion Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and ex–men’s champion Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell). The event became one of the most popular televised sports events of all time. The Closing Night film is The Man Who Invented Christmas and recounts how Charles Dickens (Dan Stevens) created Ebenezer Scrooge (Christopher Plummer), Tiny Tim and other classic characters from A Christmas Carol. Other highlights include the Shorts To Features Conference with special guest Jim Sheridan in conversation about his long and distinguished career. Jim Sheridan will also introduce a special screening of My Left Foot in Brunswick Moviebowl. The cult movie Withnail And I shares Foyle Film Festival’s 30th birthday celebrations this year, and the festival programme includes a special screening with Richard E. Grant in attendance to talk about this hilarious classic and his career in the film industry. The festival pays tribute to the late Sam Shepard with a screening of Days Of Heaven. In a special event following the screening, Stephen Rea and Judith Roddy will read from the short stories of Sam Shepard.

    MeierMovies Short Films by Star Rating Theatrically released motion pictures of 40 minutes or less For every great feature, there’s a great short, and this list attempts to chronicle just some of those tiny masterpieces – and their not-so-masterful counterparts. For films to make this list, they must have played in at least one film festival or showcase, or theatrical venue, for a paying audience. Films shown only on television (or available only on DVD, Blu-ray, video or online) are reserved for my Television list. Also not included here are student films and similar projects that have never been presented at a theatrical venue that charged admission to viewers. (Please note that this is slightly more lenient than the qualifications for the feature- film lists, which require that a film of more than 40 minutes play at least two major festivals, or have a limited or general release.) Theatrical newsreels (pre-television) and theatrically released trailers are not eligible for this list, although mini-documentaries and travelogues (typically playing alongside trailers and B-features in the 1930-1950s) are. Short films shown at theme parks and museums are eligible, but not if they rely on animatronic/interactive/live elements. Shorts produced for timed competitions, such as 48-hour or 24-hour projects, are not included here, unless those films were subsequently screened at a second venue. The ratings system is the same as that of the feature-film list, just with no half or quarter stars.     La ruptura de la rutina y la soledad de los protagonistas como detonante de las grandes historias breves: Análisis de los cortometrajes animados ganadores del Oscar (2011-2015) The disruption of the protagonist’s routine and loneliness as a detonator of great short stories: Analysis of five animated short films which won the Academy Award (2011-2015) Tomás Atarama Rojas, Lucía Castañeda-Purizaga1 Recibido el 29 de setiembre de 2016 – Aceptado el 23 de enero de 2017 RESUMEN: Este artículo presenta un estudio de los cortometrajes animados ganadores del premio Oscar del año 2011 al 2015, donde se analiza de modo específico a los protagonistas y la manera en que estos mueven la historia. Los resultados señalan que los protagonistas son presentados en una vida rutinaria y solitaria que se ve interrumpida por un acontecimiento fuera de lo normal; este contraste sirve como detonante de la historia. Además, este artículo muestra que los cortometrajes analizados tienden a desarrollar una sola trama y una acción simple con un solo clímax. ABSTRACT: This article presents a study of the animated short films that won the Academy Award from 2011 to 2015, specifically focusing on how their protagonists move the story forward. The main characters in these five case studies are presented in a monotonous routine. This analysis has found that their lonely life is disrupted by an event out of the ordinary, which sets the story in motion. Along with this, the article illustrates that short films tend to develop a single plot and a single action with a single climax.
