  • Louise H. Forsyth

The Museum off Modern Art 50th Anniversary NO. 16 ID FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 3, 1981 DOCUMENTARY FILMS FROM THE NATIONAL FILM BOARD OF CANADA FEATURED AT MoMA NATIONAL FILM BOARD OF CANADA: A RETROSPECTIVE is a three-part tribute presented by The Museum of Modern Art in recog nition of NFBC's 41 years Of exceptional filmmaking. PART TWO: DOCUMENTARY FILMS, running from March 26 through May 12 in the Museum's Roy and Niuta Titus Auditorium, will trace the develop ment of the documentary form at NFBC, and will be highlighted by a selection of some of the finest films directed by Donald Brittain, whose work has won wide acclaim and numerous awards. PART TWO: DOCUMENTARY will get off to an auspicious start with twelve of Donald Brittain's powerful and unconventional portraits of exceptional individuals. Best known in this country for "Volcano: An Inquiry Into The Life and Death of Malcolm Lowry" (1976), Brittain brings his personal stamp of creative interpretation to such subjects as America's love affair with the automobile in "Henry Ford's America" (1976) ; the flamboyant Lord Thompson of Fleet Street (the newspaper baron who just sold the cornerstone of his empire, The London Times) in "Never A Backward Step" (1966); Norman Bethune, the Canadian poet/ doctor/revolutionary who became a great hero in China when he marched with Mao ("Bethune" 1964); and the phenomenal media hysteria sur rounding the famous quintuplets in "The Diorme Years" (1979) . "Memo randum" (1965) accompanies a Jewish glazier from Tcronto when he takes his son back to the concentration camp where he was interned, an emotion al and historical pilgrimage of strong impact and sensitivity.

  • 1 1 Murder in Arcadia: Towards a Pastoral of Responsibility in Phil
1 Murder in Arcadia: Towards a Pastoral of Responsibility in Phil Rickman’s Merrily Watkins Murder Mystery Series The phantasy, then, in which the detective story addict indulges, is the phantasy of being restored to the Garden of Eden, to a state of innocence where he may know love as love and not as the law. - W. H. Auden, “The Guilty VicaraGe” It is timely to ask what deployments and representations of nature tell us about humankind’s attitudes towards it. The appeal of the pastoral and/or ‘nature’ endures undeterred in popular fiction, suGGestinG that the cultural imaGination is reluctant to relinquish the solace or drama that these conventions and cateGories traditionally offer. This is especially the case in the crime Genre. It is true that there is currently a trend in British television drama that insists on the darker underbelly of small town, semi-rural communities, which foster in their midst a lonGstandinG corruption, and which the very nature of their rural isolation has at best allowed unchallenged. Such dramas as Broadchurch, Southcliffe and The Guilty (UK), or The Top of the Lake (New Zealand) do not necessarily depart from the formula by leaving the crime unsolved. In fact, in Southcliffe we are in no doubt from the start. But they leave the viewer with a stronG sense of the idyll permanently ruptured, of beinG, in fact, party to the corruption by believinG in the idyll in the first place. Dramas like these further suGgest that the solved crime is merely a symptom of an innate rottenness that cannot be comfortably contained or eradicated, that et in arcadia ego is always the case.

Here, the noise of the traffic recedes and the street’s charms surge subtly into focus: fashion boutiques and indie cafés tucked into the ground floors of 19th Century Altbauten, the elegantly run-down Kino Babylon and the dark and seductive cocktail bar Würgeengel, the “exterminating angel”, a name borrowed from a surrealist film by luis Buñuel. It all looked very different in the 80s of course, when the Berlin Wall stood just under a kilometre away and the façades of these houses – now expensively renovated and worth a pretty penny – were still pockmarked by World War Two bulletholes. Mostly devoid of baths, the interiors heated by coal, their inhabitants – mostly Turkish immigrants – shivered and shuffled their way through the Berlin winter. 12 13 It was during this pre-Wende milieu that a tall, skinny and largely unknown Australian musician named Nicholas Edward Cave moved into no. 11. Aside from brief spells in apartments on naumannstraße (Schöneberg), yorckstraße, and nearby Oranienstraße, Cave spent the bulk of his seven on-and-off years in Berlin living in a tiny apartment alongside filmmaker and musician Christoph Dreher, founder of local outfit Die Haut. It was in this house that Cave wrote the lyrics and music for several Birthday Party and Bad Seeds albums, penned his debut novel (And The Ass Saw The Angel) and wielded a sizeable influence over Kreuzberg’s burgeoning post-punk scene.

In his first drypoints, Dine brought a fresh and imaginative attitude to printmaking, directly relating this work to his "happenings" and construc tion/canvases. He was one of the first to return to the oKJ art of hand-coloring prints, thereby producing a body of work of infinite variety. His most recent work has an expressive, tor tured character that expands and may reorient ideas regarding Dine's art and that of his generation.
