A Republic of Lost Peoples: Race, Status, and Community in the Eastern Andes of Charcas at the Turn of the Seventeenth Century A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA BY Nathan Weaver Olson IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Sarah C. Chambers August 2017 © Nathan Weaver Olson 2017 Acknowledgements There is a locally famous sign along the highway between the Bolivian cities of Vallegrande and El Trigal that marks the turn-off for the town of Moro Moro. It reads: “Don’t say that you know the world if you don’t know Moro Moro.” Although this dissertation began as an effort to study the history of Moro Moro, and more generally the province of Vallegrande, located in the Andean highlands of the department of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, the research and writing process has made me aware of an entire world of Latin American history. Thus, any recounting of the many people who have contributed to this project must begin with the people of Moro Moro themselves, whose rich culture and sense of regional identity first inspired me to learn more about Bolivian history. My companions in that early journey, all colleagues from the Mennonite Central Committee, included Patrocinio Garvizu, Crecensia García, James “Phineas” Gosselink, Dantiza Padilla, and Eloina Mansilla Guzmán, to name only a few. I owe my interest and early academic grounding in Colonial Latin American history to my UCSD professors Christine Hunefeldt, Nancy Postero, Eric Van Young, and Michael Monteón. My colleagues at UCSD’s Center for Iberian and Latin American Studies and the Dimensions of Culture Writing Program at UCSD’s Thurgood Marshall College made me a better researcher and teacher.

At his suggestion, she went to Peru in 1972 and worked with the collections of Inca ceramics at the Museo Arqueológico of the Universidad Nacional de San Antonio de Abad in Cuzco, a research project aiming at a more detailed chronology of Inca-style pottery. In 1973 and 1974, Julien worked as a fieldwork assistant in the Qotakalli Tarawi project organized by Rowe and Lyon, excavating sites in the neighborhood of Cuzco.

  • Colonialism, Institutional Change, and Shifts in Global Labour Relations
3 WORK AROUND THE GLOBE: HISTORICAL COMPARISONS AND CONNECTIONS Hofmeester Zwart & De (eds) and Shifts in Global Labour Relations Labour Global in Shifts and Colonialism, Institutional Change, Edited by Karin Hofmeester and Pim de Zwart Colonialism, Institutional Change, and Shifts in Global Labour Relations Colonialism, Institutional Change, and Shifts in Global Labour Relations Work Around the Globe: Historical Comparisons and Connections Open Access Book Series of the International Institute of Social History (IISH) Most human beings work, and growing numbers are exposed to labour markets. These markets are increasingly globally competitive and cause both capital and labour to move around the world. In search of the cheapest labour, industries and service-based enterprises move from West to East and South, but also, for example, westwards from China’s east coast. People move from areas with few employment opportunities to urban and industrial hubs, both between and within continents. However, labour relations have been shifting already for centuries, labour migrations go back far in time, and changing labour relations cannot be comprehended without history. Therefore, understanding these developments and their consequences in the world of work and labour relations requires sound historical research, based on the experiences of different groups of workers in different parts of the world at different moments in time, throughout human history. It is situated in the eastern foothills of the Bolivian Andes and is a popular tourist destination for Bolivians and foreigners alike and is served by the nearby town of Samaipata. The archaeological site at El Fuerte is 2 unique as it encompasses buildings of three different cultures: Chanè, Inca, and Spanish. Although called a fort, Samaipata had also a religious, ceremonial, and residential function. Most academics believe that its construction was probably begun by the Chané, a pre- Inca people of Arawak origin. The Chane, together with other Arawak groups, left Guyana approximately 2,500 years ago. They developed an agrarian culture, built densely populated villages, cultivated corn, peanuts, cotton and squash, and are famous for their ceramics and graphics which have been found mainly in the pampas surrounding the city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, El Fuerte in Samaipata, and in Portachuelo, Valle Abajo, Okinawa, Cotoca, El Pari, Mataral and Warnes. They also craft wooden masks and 3 fabric clothing. However, whether or not they had any metal tool making skills is doubtful, and part of the reason that this book has been written. For academics to presume that the shaped surfaces in red sandstone, including several deep niches found at Samaipata were created by a rather primitive jungle people is a stretch.

  • ¿Ocupación Yampara En Quila Quila? Cambios Socio – Políticos De Una Sociedad Prehispánica Durante El Horizonte Tardío
UNIVERSIDAD MAYOR DE SAN ANDRÉS FACULTAD DE CIENCIAS SOCIALES CARRERA DE ARQUEOLOGÍA ¿OCUPACIÓN YAMPARA EN QUILA QUILA? CAMBIOS SOCIO – POLÍTICOS DE UNA SOCIEDAD PREHISPÁNICA DURANTE EL HORIZONTE TARDÍO Tesis para optar al grado de Licenciatura Presentada por: María del Pilar Lima Tórrez Tutora: Sonia Alconini M. Ph.D. La Paz - Bolivia Mayo de 2000 2 The man who can voice support for Black Power or who can denounce American imperialism in Latin America or Vietnam, but who plays the sycophant to the most petty authorities in his university, is no radical; the man who mouths phrases about the need for revolution abroad, but who is a coiled spring ready to punish the rebels among his own graduate students, is no radical; the academician who with mighty oaths denounces the President of the United States, but subserviently fawns upon his Department Chairman, is no radical; the man who denounces opportunistic power politics, but practices it daily among his university colleagues, is no radical. Such men are playing one of the oldest games in personal politics; they are seeking to maintain a creditable image of themselves, while accommodating to the most vulgar careerism. Such men are seeking neither to change nor to know the world; their aim is to grap a piece of it for themselves. A.
