The handbooks are authoritative reference books of practical information and quantitative1 facts helpful in the design and development of Army maleriel so that it will meet the tactical and the technical needs of the Armed Forces. This handbook, Military Pyrott duties, /'art Fire, Bibliography, is a support­ ing handbook for all of the handbooks in the Pyrotechnics Series. It contains a rich source of references, in addition to those specifically listed in the other handbooks of this Series. Material for this handbook was compiled by the Denver Research Institute of the University of Denver while in the process of preparing the manuscript for Military Pyrotechnics, Part One, Tluory and Application. Noteworthy in the collection of this source material was the diligent pursuance of Airs. Alta Morrison of the Denver Research Institute. Hirt INTRODUCTION The impact of Rome on the exploitation of natural resources remains highly visible in the many ancient stone and marble quarries dotting the landscape of the former empire. Not only do they reveal the techniques employed in separating the marble or granite from the rock face, the distribution of their output can still be traced. The progressively more scientific determination of type and origin of these stones used in sacred and profane architecture of the Roman Empire reveals an increasingly detailed image of the distributive patterns of coloured stones. Even so, the analysis of these patterns stays vexed: the written sources are frightfully mute on the core issues, expressly on the emperor’s role in the quarrying industry and his impact on the marble trade. Scholarly discourse has oscillated between two positions: John Ward- Perkins argued that by the mid-first century AD all ‘principal’ quarries were ‘nationalized’, i.e. put under imperial control and leased out to contractors for rent; the quarries were a source of revenue for the emperor, the distribution of its output driven by commercial factors.1 Clayton Fant, however, offered a different view: the emperor monopolized the use of coloured and white marbles and their sources not for profit, but for ‘prestige’, consolidating his position as unchallenged patron and benefactor of the empire.

    99 9. THE SCULPTURES FOUND IN THE BOULEUTERION AND THE SCULPTURAL PROGRAM OF THE VEDIUS SCAENAE FRONS364 The sculptures found in the Bouleuterion were mainly discovered by J. T. Wood in the early 1860s. Two frag- ments of inscribed statue bases (sculp. 1.3 and 1.6, see chapter 9.5, pls. 67, 2; 68) were recorded by J. Keil in 1908, whereas W. Alzinger’s excavations in 1970 yielded only one small fragment of a male head (sculp. 2.4, pl. 70, 2). About half of the sculptures are attested only by inscribed statue bases or are mentioned in Wood’s letters to the British Museum. As far as we know, Wood sent three sculptures (sculp. 1.1; 1.4; 2.3, pls. 66; 69; 70, 1.3) to the British Museum; one of them (sculp. 1.4, pls. 69; 70, 1) was returned to the Imperial Ottoman Museum in Constantinople. A fourth piece, the statue of a Muse (sculp. 2.1, pls. 70, 4; 71), was also intended for the British Museum, but sank with the ship off the coast of Syros. It was retrieved in a partially damaged state from the sea and is now displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Syros (see below, chapter 9.2). The whereabouts of five other bases or plinths and sculptures (sculp. 1.2; 1.5; 2.2; 3.1; 3.2; pl. 67, 1) found by Wood are unknown. The fragment of the inscribed base sculp. 1.3 is stored in the epigraphic depot at the site of Ephesos; the location of the fragment of the base sculp.

    THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN: ARMAMENT OF THE COMPETING FIGHTERS Based on information from 'Flying Guns: World War 2' © Anthony G Williams 2004 Revised 29 August 2005, with thanks to contributors The three principal competing fighters of the Battle of Britain; the Supermarine Spitfire, Hawker Hurricane and Messerschmitt Bf 109, are well known. However, there is still some misunderstanding of the relative performance of the armament they used and the effect of this on the Battle. This article is an attempt to set the record straight. The armament The British armament was quite straightforward; both aircraft had eight belt- fed .303" (7.7mm) Browning guns mounted four in each wing outside the propeller disk. Rate of fire was 20 rounds per second per gun (160 rps overall) and the cartridge fired ball, AP, tracer or incendiary bullets weighing around 11.3 grams at around 740 m/s (2,430 fps). Total weight of projectiles fired was 1.8 kg (4 lb) per second. Ammunition capacity was enough for 16 seconds continuous firing in the Spitfire, slightly more in the Hurricane. The Messerschmitt's armament was mixed, and had been going through various changes. One constant in all 109s (until the later G series) was the twin MG 17s in the cowling, synchronised to fire through the propeller disk – this held their rate of fire down to about 17 rps each. The 7.9mm cartridge was slightly more powerful than the .303's although it is difficult to make direct comparisons as the bullet weight and muzzle velocity varied according to loading (and the round was improved early in the war with the even more powerful v-Munition).

It places that meeting within its wider geopolitical context and considers its consequences for Romano-Parthian relations over the following decade. Near Eastern history of this period is confused, relying upon sparse textual evidence; as a consequence it is known as the Parthian Dark Age. This study addresses this shortfall in our evidence by reassessing the translations of Classical sources, employing Babylonian cuneiform texts, interpreting archaeological research and reinterpreting numismatic evidence. This thesis argues that the early development of Romano-Parthian relations was a product of wider geopolitical forces to an extent that has not been considered by previous scholarship.

SB VI 8978 In Column II line 11 we read ka‹ P`a`Ë`n`[i] *n ériy(mÆsevw) Pax≈n (as was printed in the ed.pr. of the text in Aegyptus 20, 1940, 304-305). This is a misprint for ka‹ P`a`Ë`n`[i] *h ériy(mÆsevw) Pax≈n, as can be seen by reference to the tabulation of the dates in this papyrus provided by E. Bayer in Aegyptus 20, 1940, 306. Incidentally the seventh entry in this tabulation is wrong: Pharmouthi 3 (Column II line 1 of the text) corresponds to 29 March, AD 155, not 28 March, AD 155, as stated there. SB VI 8981 Lines 4, 6 and 8 contain dates. Line 4 has Mecheir 9, year 17 of Septimius Severus, Caracalla and Geta. This corresponds to 3 February, AD 209 and is the earliest of the dates.
