LIU RESOURCE GUIDE message from the Provost

Dear Colleagues:

Welcome to the LIU Brooklyn Resource Guide! Developed by a diverse team of LIU Brooklyn faculty and administrators in 2011, this guide is designed as a handy online reference for faculty and staff at LIU Brooklyn to serve our students and maximize their success—as well as your own.

Whether you are new to LIU or a longtime member of the campus community, this guide will better acquaint you with our extraordinary array of programs and services. You’ll find information on financial assistance programs for your students’ or your own research; where to find help with classroom technology; how to organize a special event and get it publicized; and how to take advantage of the campus’s rich cultural, culinary and health and wellness programs. This guide also contains vital information about campus policies and compliance regulations.

The Resource Guide is organized into the following major sections: • Schools and Colleges • Specialized Programs • Resources for: – Students – Faculty – Campus • Compliance Resources

My hope is that this guide will help you take advantage of our pedagogical, administrative and student services to enhance your teaching and advising and make you a more effective, engaged member of the LIU Brooklyn community.

While providing an overview of the LIU Brooklyn programs and policies, this guide is by no means all-inclusive . Much more information is available at our website at www.liu.edu/brooklyn . The guide also will be available in print and will be updated annually. If you believe we have omitted important information that we should include in future editions of the LIU Brooklyn Resource Guide, please contact the Associate Provost’s Office, located in Metcalfe Hall, Room 301, by phone at (718) 488-3405 or by completing the Resource Guide Form, available in our office and online.

As you navigate this guide, please keep in mind our primary purpose: to inspire academic excellence, personal growth, empathy, equity and civic responsibility in our students.

Sincerely,

Gale Stevens Haynes, J.D. Provost LIU Brooklyn

3 • www.liu.edu/brooklyn welcome LIU Brooklyn Mission and History Revealed in its still-relevant motto, “Urbi et Orbi,” the mission of LIU since its founding in 1926 has been to open the doors of the city and the world to men and women of all ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds who wish to achieve the satisfaction of the educated life and to serve the public good.

As LIU’s first campus, LIU Brooklyn personifies that mission today, providing a diverse, intellectually challenging and personally engaging community in downtown Brooklyn that enrolls more than 11,200 students and offers more than 200 academic programs.

Our students come from widely varied, yet primarily urban backgrounds. Many of them are new to America and new to the English language. At LIU Brooklyn, students find an academic community where cultural, ethnic, religious, racial, sexual and individual differences are respected and commonalities are affirmed.

Our faculty members have a strong commitment to teaching, to personal advisement of students, to the fullest range of scholarship, and to their own development and service. LIU Brooklyn recognizes its faculty expertise and diverse student body as two of its greatest strengths.

LIU Brooklyn offers comprehensive undergraduate and graduate curricula in business, education, health sciences, nursing, pharmacy, liberal arts and sciences, media and communication and the arts. The campus also offers man y specialized programs to help students and other community members acquire essential literacies and develop their intellectual curiosity, analytic reasoning skills and communication skills. LIU Brooklyn students enjoy personalized attention, small class size and flexible course schedules.

LIU Brooklyn landmarks include a major performing arts complex, opened in 2005, that includes the 320-seat Kumble Theater; the $45 million Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center, opened in 2006; and the Louise B. ’69 and Leonard Riggio Cyber Café, opened in 2007, providing a high-tech hot spot for students, staff and faculty to meet and eat. LIU Brooklyn provides an array of innovative academic and community service programs and boasts a proud history of excellence in Division I athletics.

LIU is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, 3624 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104 (267) 284-5000. The Commission on Higher Education is an institutional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. The degree and certificate programs also are approved and registered by the State Education Department.
