Last, but most important of all, I thank my parents Kuna Smits and Mohamed Gazzah for always standing by me and inspiring me with their support, encouragements and advice. 7 Notes on transcription In the transcription of terms in Arabic and Arabic names, no diacritic signs have been used except the c to indicate the Arabic letter cayn and the ' for the Arabic letter hamza, with the exception of the word shaabi. This word is used as a genre label for ‘popular Moroccan folk music’; on the inter- net and in music shops. On the compartment labels it is usually transcribed without diacritic signs. Terms that are common in the English language or toponyms are transcribed in their most common English form, for example, burqa, jihad and Mecca. These words are not written in italics. In other cases, I have used italics to indicate the Arabic origin of the words, for example, hadith, culama or anasheed. In this dissertation parts of song lyrics are cited and translated from Dutch into English (fair use). I have tried to get in touch with the rightful authors of these texts to ask permission for citing and translating them, but this was to no avail. 8 Introduction Ahmed (organizer of Moroccan concerts): “Music does something to people. Being together [during a concert] also touches people, it gives them a certain identity; as if…it’s like they are all going to Morocco on a boat. You feel…you are separate, but you are one. That is a feeling that I cannot explain to you. You know? We all have that same feeling. And then [when the boat arrives], then you see your country. With a concert, it’s the same thing: a feeling of solidarity comes over you. You want to share the music with each other, just like you want to share food. That is the feeling it gives.” Amal (freelance journalist): “It is not like the music is there and you are outside of it, you know….You are the music…. [During a concert or party] I have to dance. I have to! It is shyness that can stop me, but when I start dancing, then euhh…wonderful!” M.G: “Do you notice what is going on around you..?” Amal: “Ehmm, well you see, I am, of course, a Moroccan girl and we are always aware of who is watching us, because anything can and will be used against you in a court of law. Ha-ha.” Aisha (student): “[Music is] the soundtrack of my life. I like that phrase. And I really believe it. There are songs that when you hear them, doesn’t matter if it is ten or fifteen years ago, you know exactly what you were doing at that time, what happened, that kind of stuff. Yeah, it is…background, it is a frame of refer- ence, it is décor, it is experience, atmosphere…” Music is everywhere in our contemporary society: in shopping cen- tres, in elevators, on the radio and on TV, when you are put on hold during a telephone call, in aeroplanes and so on. In his book Musicofilia, neurologist Oliver Sacks explains that, for human beings, listening to music is a neuro- logical as well as an aural, emotional, and physical activity. Our brain is neu- rologically sensitive to the sounds, rhythms, structure, and melody of music. 9 RHYTHMS AND RHYMES OF LIFE Music is able to arouse very powerful emotions, such as happiness, lust, sadness, and other emotions. When human beings hear music, they (uncon- sciously) move their muscles to tap to the beat, they mimic the facial expres- sions of the musician, or use a specific body language to express emotions (Sacks 2007: 9).

    Introduction to Global Music The Center for European Studies (CES) and other Area Studies Centers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are collaborating with the student-run radio station WXYC in the production of the Global Music Show. This monthly hour-long program features music from a particular area of the world combined with commentary by guest scholars, who discuss the music played in the context of the culture and history of the region that produced it. To support cultural learning, CES has created student listening guides, pre- and post-listening discussion questions, and resource links for each of their Global Music programs. The programs run about one hour, and so listening and discussion would work well for block schedule classes. If your class runs the traditional hour length, you can have the class listen over two periods, and then discuss. Alternatively, you can assign the listening for homework, and hold the discussion during class time. Music can teach us much about a culture that never appears in a textbook. Use these programs and teaching resources to connect your students with European cultures in a dynamic, new way. Encourage students to continue their exploration of Europe through music. Koen van Eijck June 8th, 2015 Foreword “You are trying to apply science to something that isn’t!” With those words, interviewee and godfather of Nederhop Kees de Koning summarized quite well what I have been doing for the last couple of months. Ambitious as I was at the start of the master thesis process, I figured I could interview some key behind-the-scenes figures of the Dutch hip-hop scene without too much trouble. At times, I wished I had listened to those who told me to pick another topic because people from the music industry are generally too busy to conduct a, for them, uninteresting interview. But this thesis now lies in front of you, finished and well, and ready to be read. But it did not become what it is now without any problems. Problems that I did not solve by myself. March 2019 In 2014 the legendary hip hop group Wu-Tang Clan announced that it had recorded Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, a double album produced in secret over the course of six years. The album was limited to a single physical copy, stored in a secured vault, and auctioned through auction house Paddle8 for a winning bid of $2,000,000 in 2015. The purchase included contractual terms stating that the album could not be commercially exploited by the subsequent owner until the year 2103. The concept behind the creation was explained by Wu-Tang Clan as follows: “History demonstrates that great musicians such as Bach, Beethoven and Mozart were held in profoundly high esteem. They were considered sublime artists and masters of exploring emotion. Their work forged windows into the most elusive elements of the human experience. And yet in our time, music is no longer perceived in the same way. “Perhaps it is our cultural attitudes to modern music that have cast it as something to be consumed. The complacency of no holds barred access and the saturation wrought by technology’s erosion of challenges. By contrast, music which is popular but perceived as “bad” has generated surprisingly little interest. À partir de la musique, qui s’y écoute, s’y chante et s’y joue depuis 50 ans, le film va raconter l’histoire de la population de ce quartier emblématique de l’immigration algérienne. On y découvre également l’histoire du quartier lui-même, ses transformations sociales et urbaines, la richesse de ses contrastes dus aux mouvements migratoires suc- cessifs et l’évolution de son statut singulier au sein de Paris, en France et son « rayonnement » par-delà la Méditerranée.

Dutch-Moroccan youth are often pioneers in the Dutch hip- OF hop scene, using music as a tool to identify with or distance themselves from others. They (re)present and position themselves in society through LIFE music and musical activities. The chapters deal with the development of the Dutch-Moroccan music scene, the construction of Dutch-Moroccan identity, the impact of Islam on female artists and the way Dutch- Moroccan rappers react to stereotypes about Moroccans.

    “WE AIN’T TERRORISTS, BUT WE DROPPIN’ BOMBS”: LANGUAGE USE AND LOCALIZATION OF HIP HOP IN EGYPT BY ANGELA SELENA WILLIAMS THESIS Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Linguistics in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2009 Urbana, Illinois Adviser: Assistant Professor Marina Terkourafi ABSTRACT In this thesis I explore the localization of hip hop in the context of Egypt. I examine the process of localization in terms of the content (issues and topics), forms (language forms) and musical styles that are used in the cases of four Egyptian groups, MTM, Arabian Knightz, Y-Crew and Asfalt. I argue that despite one group’s (Arabian Knightz) frequent use of English, all the groups have become localized in terms of exploiting local themes and language conventions, as well as creating new language practices. I explore how the groups resist established usage conventions and redefine language ideologies. In demonstrating that language choices in hip hop lyrics do not merely reflect the existing social norms and language ideology, it will be seen that English, which usually functions as an ‘elite code’ in Egypt, is actually used in the lyrics to resist the English-speaking world. Through the production of rap music, the groups also change local traditions (i.e. meanings of local language), as well as create a space (via the Internet and media) for these traditions to spread (Pennycook 2007:139). I demonstrate that in regards to hip hop culture, localization is a process that involves local topics and the use of language conventions that authenticate the artists as being legitimate participants of hip hop culture while constructing their own hip hop identities.
