However, in the past the name “Armenia” applied to a much larger territory stretching from the Black and Caspian Seas in the north to Lakes Van and Urmia in the south. Today this region is split up between Turkey, Iran, and Azerbaijan. Paradox- ically, Mount Ararat (its Armenian name is Masis), an Armenian holy site and symbol of Armenia, on which according to the Book of Genesis (8, 4) Noah’s ark came to rest aft er the Flood, is no longer within the borders of Armenia. Th e Armenian nation is one of the very few ancient peoples which have survived to the present times with a historic legacy of around twenty-six hundred years. For this reason Armenia is sometimes referred to as “the cradle of civilisation.”1 For many people the history of this land and its religion have an exotic Oriental air. Yet there are few Oriental nations so deeply rooted in Western culture. Armenia and its people appeared time and again on the pages of medieval chronicles, chivalric romances, in European diplomacy and in papal records. Th e history of the Armenian nation and its Christian religion is a real East-meets-West story, and that is why it has caught the interest of historians from many countries. Th e Armenian Church is one of the oldest branches of Christianity. As it broke away quite early from the mainstream of Christianity in the Roman Empire, a number of ancient vestiges going back to the fi rst Christian com- munities have survived in its rites and traditions. A knowledge of Armenian is virtually a must for Biblical scholars and patrologists. Many of the treatises written by the Fathers of the Church and other early Christian writers the originals of which have been lost have been preserved in Armenian trans- lations. A good example is the famous Chronicle by Eusebius of Caesarea, which was discovered in the late 18th century in a collection of translations done by ancient Armenian translators. Th ere are still a lot of patristic texts 1 David M. Perhaps in the future they will throw an interesting light on the history of the Early Church and Chris- tian philosophy and theology. Armenian rites have attracted the attention of many Western liturgists interested in the origins of Early Christian ritual and devotion. Considerable progress has been made in recent decades in Armenian studies. Th e historiography and hagiography has been thoroughly re-examined, and the results of this critical review have brought a radical revision of the chronology accepted hitherto. The genesis of the Armenian nation has been examined in an earlier Study.1 Its nucleus, succeeding to the role of the Yannic nucleus ot Urartu, was the 'proto-Armenian,T Hayasa-Phrygian, people-state,2 which at first oc- cupied only a small section of the former Urartian, or subsequent Armenian, territory. And it was, precisely, of the expansion of this people-state over that territory, and of its blending with the remaining Urartians and other proto- Caucasians that the Armenian nation was born. That expansion proceeded from the earliest proto-Armenian settlement in the basin of the Arsanias (East- ern Euphrates) up the Euphrates, to the valley of the upper Tigris, and espe- cially to that of the Araxes, which is the central Armenian plain.3 This expand- ing proto-Armenian nucleus formed a separate satrapy in the Iranian empire, while the rest of the inhabitants of the Armenian Plateau, both the remaining Urartians and other proto-Caucasians, were included in several other satrapies.* Between Herodotus's day and the year 401, when the Ten Thousand passed through it, the land of the proto-Armenians had become so enlarged as to form, in addition to the Satrapy of Armenia, also the trans-Euphratensian vice-Sa- trapy of West Armenia.5 This division subsisted in the Hellenistic phase, as that between Greater Armenia and Lesser Armenia.

At this time and during the period following the death of the late Pius XII, he was considered by many observers as one of the most likely "candidates" for the Papacy. His two trips to the United States in 1954 and in May of this past year have served to bring him to the attention of the American public. From prehistory to the current time period this has been shown to be true. The civilizations who have been able to harness water, transport it and conserve it are the societies that have risen to power. The Persian Empires, from the earliest to the last, were masters of water husbandry. They developed an underground transport system called qanats that enabled them to become one of the greatest empires the world has ever seen. Not only has their knowledge of water transport enabled the irrigation of fields, it provided water for domestic purposes in their homes, to air- condition their homes and allowed the use of sewage systems which helped to keep disease at bay. Domination of the oceans by the Vikings gave rise to their success. Civilizations are driving by the way in which they respond to the challenges of their environment.

Contents Intrоduction Relations between Frigg and the Goddess of the Crete Island Motifs in Norse Mythology Motifs in Armenian Mythology Artifacts Circle of the World Afterword References Introduction According to conventional opinion, the well-known memorial stone (Fig. 1a) from the Swedish island Gotland (400-600 AC) depicts goddess Frigg holding snakes. The unique statuettes of a goddess holding snakes are discovered on Crete (Fig. 1b), which date to c. 1600 BC1. The depiction of Frigg embodies a godmother with her legs wide open to give birth. In Norse mythology Frigg, Frige (Old Norse Frigg), Frea or Frija (Frija – “beloved”) is the wife of Odin. She is the mother of the three gods Baldr, Hodr and Hermodr. a b Fig. 1. The Eastern Rites follow a liturgical calendar, as does the Latin Rite. However, there are significant differences.
