From Rome to Ireland UPPSALA UNIVERSITY Department of Theology History of Religions and Behavioral Sciences of Religion E, 30 credits Spring 2018 Supervisor: Gabriella Beer Examiner: Lena Roos From Rome to Ireland – a comparative analysis of two pagan goddesses and a Christian saint Joanna Pettersson 920811 [email protected] Abstract In Celtic religious studies, it is often difficult to find reliable textual sources if you are working with pre-Christian religion, since all text is written in a Christian context. As a result, Celtic scholars have to look outside of the pre-Christian Celtic context, to search for knowledge elsewhere. For example, one may use texts from Classical writers (such as Caesar) who wrote about Celts they encountered, or look to Christian material (in particular saints’ lives) to search for clues of pagan traditions which may have survived into Christianity. This has resulted in that certain Celtic pagan deities which we do not have a lot of information on, are compared to or even equated with other religious figures from outside of the pagan Celtic context. One such example is the pagan Irish goddess Brigid, who is frequently equated with the Roman goddess Minerva, and also said to be the predecessor of the Christian Saint Brigid. Some also make comparisons between Minerva and the saint. This thesis aims to make an extensive textual analysis where all of these three characters are compared and discussed. Are they actually ‘the same’, and if not, how similar or different are they? Is the equating valid, or do we need to take another approach within the Celtic field? Using discourse theory and a comparative method, the research eventually shows that some of the characters’ most important traits are lost when we do equate them with each other. Introduction 1.1 Background In Celtic religious studies, we usually find ourselves in a difficult position when it comes to source material. The problem is rooted in the fact that we do not have any native, contemporary written sources from pre-Christian Celtic areas. Because of this, it is almost inevitable that we will have to look for information and answers to our questions about pre- Christian religion in other religious traditions. All our native Celtic literature is medieval, and written in a Christian context.1 There are plenty of mythological tales about pre-Christian times throughout the Insular Celtic areas (mainly from Ireland and the UK), but as they are not contemporary, and written within another religious context, we do not know what in these texts would have been strictly accurate. Of course, we also have archaeological findings, but the interpretations of those objects are inevitably speculative. A lot of these findings which we actually can interpret with more ease are the Romano-Celtic findings, as they often bear readable inscriptions. One main source of textual information about pre-Christian religion, other than the medieval Celtic texts, are texts from Classical writers, such as the Romans who interacted with different Celtic groups of people.2 All of this has led to the situation which I intend to address in this thesis; the equating of religious figures. Because of our lack of sources, it has been common to equate certain deities, both within and outside of the Celtic religious tradition, with each other. First of all, we have the Celtic goddess Brigid. We find her in several medieval sources describing pre-Christian mythology. In order to learn more about her, scholars have used another Celtic goddess, who is often described as either her predecessor or her equal – Brigantia, who we find both on the European continent among the Brigantes (a Celtic group of people), and in the UK.3 Brigantia, in her turn, is commonly equated with the Roman goddess Minerva, based on the writings of Classical authors (for example Julius Caesar), and Romano-Celtic inscriptions.4 And so, we 1 Kissane, Noel. And some say He has providentially brought the mission to us, and so now we must choose whether to see the developments in our generation as a horrible tragedy of epic proportions — an epic fail — or whether to see them as the Great Surprise from the God who wants all of His lost children found.

    PILGRIMAGE STORIES: THE FARMER FAIRY’S STONE By Betty Lou Chaika One of the primary intentions of our recent six-week pilgrimage, first to Scotland and then to Ireland, was to visit EarthSpirit sanctuaries in these ensouled landscapes. We hoped to find portals to the Otherworld in order to contact renewing, healing, transformative energies for us all, and especially for some friends with cancer. I wanted to learn how to enter the field of divinity, the aliveness of the EarthSpirit world’s interpenetrating energies, with awareness and respect. Interested in both geology and in our ancestors’ spiritual relationship with Rock, I knew this quest would involve a deeper meeting with rock beings in their many forms. When we arrived at a stone circle in southwest Ireland (whose Gaelic name means Edges of the Field) we were moved by the familiar experience of seeing that the circle overlooks a vast, beautiful landscape. Most stone circles seem to be in places of expansive power, part of a whole sacred landscape. To the north were the lovely Paps of Anu, the pair of breast-shaped hills, both over 2,000 feet high, named after Anu/Aine, the primary local fertility goddess of the region, or after Anu/Danu, ancient mother goddess of the supernatural beings, the Tuatha De Danann. The summits of both hills have Neolithic cairns, which look exactly like erect nipples. This c. 1500 BC stone circle would have drawn upon the power of the still-pervasive earlier mythology of the land as the Mother’s body. But today the tops of the hills were veiled in low, milky clouds, and we could only long for them to be revealed.

Martin, May 2012 The description of the Dagda in §93 of Cath Maige Tuired has become iconic: the giant, slovenly man in a too-short tunic and crude horsehide shoes, dragging a huge club behind him. Several aspects of this depiction are unique to this text, including the language used to describe the Dagda’s odd weapon. The text presents it as a gabol gicca rothach, which Gray translates as a “wheeled fork.” In every other mention of the Dagda’s club – including the other references in CMT (§93 and §119) – the term used is lorg. DIL gives significantly different fields of reference for the two terms: 2 lorg denotes a staff, rod, club, handle of an implement, or “the membrum virile” (thus enabling the scatological pun Slicht Loirge an Dagdai, “Track of the Dagda’s Club/Penis”), while gabul bears a variety of definitions generally attached to the concept of “forking.” The attested compounds for gabul include gabulgicce, “a pronged pole,” with references to both the CMT usage and staves held by Conaire’s swineherds in Togail Bruidne Da Derga. What I wish to focus upon in the Cath Maige Tuired is not the battle in itself, which has been compared to the war between the Aesir and the Vanir in Scandinavian mythology1, but a passage at the end of this myth, where the goddess Mórrigan (here in the form of a mortal) comes with a prediction of the end of the world.

    Divine Deformity: The Plinian Races (via Isidore of Seville) in Irish Mythology Phillip A. Bernhardt-House Abstract: This article examines the characteristics of the Fomoiri in Irish mythological literature—particularly their being one-eyed, one-legged, and one- handed or one-armed—and rather than positing a proto-Indo-European or native Irish origin for these physical motifs, instead suggests that these characteristics may be derived from Isidore of Seville’s Etymologiae, which contains a catalogue of the ‘Plinian races’ of classical mythology and pseudo-ethnography within it. All of the Fomoiri’s characteristics can be compared to the physiological forms of the Giants, Sciopods, Cyclopes, and Blemmyae from the canonical list of Plinian races. Further omparison of Irish accounts of cynocephali (dog-headed humanoids) within texts like Lebor Gabála Érenn are also likely derived from Isidore. Irish pseudohistorical writings of the medieval period suggest that the isle of Ireland was invaded by successive waves of inhabitants, the first being a granddaughter of the biblical Noah called Cesair, who invaded Ireland shortly before the flood (Carey 1987), but died with the rest of her companions (apart from one, a long- lived shape-shifting survivor) in the flood itself. The next post-diluvial invasion was that of Partholón, and it was during this period when Partholón’s people were the principal inhabitants of Ireland that the first battle in Ireland occurred, which was against Cichol Grichenchos of the Fomoiri, a race described as ‘men with single arms and single legs’ in the first recension of the pseudohistorical textLebor Gabála Érenn, ‘The Book of the Taking of Ireland’ (The Book of Invasions, First Recension, 238 §38).
