Legal deposit: D/2018/6860/030 HERITAGE DAYS ⁄ 1 Foreword As part of “2018 – the European Year of Cultural Heritage”, the Brussels-Capital Region has set itself a new challenge: “What if we asked the citizens to tell us about their heritage? What if they themselves wrote the programme for the Heritage Days?” So, in September 2017, the call for projects, “Heritage that’s us!” was launched. It invited the citizens to submit projects allowing them to showcase the heritage that is important to them in their own original, unique and convivial manner. The initiative was a success, with over one hundred projects being sent in to the Monuments and Sites Directorate! Of these, the jury selected 95 submissions, and they now make up the programme for the 2018 edition of the Heritage Days. This programme, which looks at heritage from a completely different angle, might disconcert and is sure to surprise − but above all, we hope it will delight, through the wide variety of projects on offer. It reflects the vision that citizens, institutions, associations and committees have of their heritage. And it is in this connection that you are invited to take part in a multitude of activities highlighting the tangible heritage of monuments and sites, as well as moveable and intangible heritage, which is often surprising, sometimes unusual, but always captivating. A very big thank you to all those who agreed to participate and also, of course, to the members of the public who attend each edition and who, we have no doubt, will rush to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Heritage Days in this original and most appropriate manner.     CLASSIC SYMMETRY JOSEF HOFFMANN VASES FROM 1922–1923 IN ART DECO STYLE We present a design by Josef Hoffmann from the turn of the year 1923, exceptional in its architectural rendition, proportions, and manual cut. This timeless piece commemorates the 150th anniversary of the renowned designer and architect, whose creations mark the high points of glass design of the 20th century. This edition is limited to a symbolic 150 pieces. SYMMETRY OF CUT, DESIGN AND PURITY OF CRYSTAL The 40-centimetre tall hand-cut vase is the embodiment of Moser DNA, with perfection in the overall cut and precision in the individual cuts. It may not be obvious at first glance, but this piece features one of the most complex designs that our glassmakers have ever created. Josef Hoffmann AUTHOR Austrian architect and designer Josef Hoffmann (1870–1956) was one of the founders of Viennese Art Nouveau. One of his most famous architectural achievements is the Stoclet Palace in Brussels, widely regarded as a ground- breaking example of modern architecture. In 1903, he co-founded the Wiener Werkstätte – a Viennese avant-garde art association. He also employed his creativity in household glassware, creating mainstay collections for the Wiener Werkstätte and the Viennese company Lobmeyr. At the time, the supplier and implementer of Hoffmann's unique designs for both of these organisations was none other than Moser glassworks. Hoffmann’s original vases are displayed in the Glass Museum in Passau, Germany. TECHNOLOGY AHEAD OF ITS TIME Realization at the glassworks demands absolute precision and focus from the glassmakers, not only during the blowing of the basic shape, but also when the individual parts are joined together while hot (still on the blowpipe).
