Listening Guide, Matthew 22, March 26, 2020 “Wrestling with God” – Brenda Harris – www.delightinginthelord.com The Jewish leadership “wrestles” Jesus with their words to try and ensnare Him. Matthew 22:1-14 There are three parables: (Matthew 21:28-46) Parable of the Two Sons and Parable of Landowner = why the leadership would be judged (Matthew 22:1-14) Parable of Marriage Feast = what the leadership is missing and how judgment would be executed. MATTHEW 22:1-14 PARABLE OF THE WEDDING FEAST Scripture Parable Object/Person Meaning V. 2 A certain king God V. 3 Marriage for son Jesus to His Bride (The church) V. 3 Servants sent out to invite others John the Baptist/Jesus (servants) Invited Guests (Israel) V. 4 Servants sent again to tell people it was The ministry of the disciples to the time to come to the wedding Jews (Book of Acts) V. 5-6 Indifferent guests Israel V. 7 King is angry and burns up their city God with Jerusalem in 70AD V. 8 The servants filled the hall with all the Ultimately Jews and Gentiles guests they could find V.11-12 Guest with no wedding garment Self-righteous person V. 13 Bind the guest and cast him into outer Eternal separation from God/Hell darkness v. 14 For many are called but few are chosen Many are invited but few accept Matthew 22:15-22: JEWISH LEADERSHIP GROUPS High Priest Levites Chief Priests Pharisees Sadducees Herodians Scribes Lawyers Matthew 22:15-22 (continued) “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” Render = to pay back Give the coin that bears his image back to him (Caesar). Give to God your life because it has His image stamped upon it. Application: We have dual citizenship. We are to be good citizens of both heaven (first) and earth (second). Let’s be praying for our nation regularly, especially right now. Matthew 22:23-33 Jesus points out the Sadducees two mistakes: 1. They did not know scripture 2. They did not know the power of God Matthew 22:34-40 Jesus explains that all ten of the laws boil down to two which are: 1. Love God with your whole self and 2. Love your neighbor as yourself. Application: How can we love God and our neighbors better? Matthew 22:41-46 The Pharisees were unable to answer Jesus’ question in Matthew 22:45 but a young Pharisee [Paul – who also wrestles with God] could have been in Jerusalem for Passover at the time Jesus asked this question. Paul would eventually pen the answer to it in Romans 1:1-4. “The true description of Him [Jesus] is Son of God. Son of David is not an adequate title; only Son of God will do.” – William Barclay .
