One of the defining business conditions of 2009 was the effect of the world economic crisis. Most of our mem- bers experienced lower sales and more difficult bank and financing conditions. Many were forced to pursue cost- cutting measures in order to limit losses and conserve cash liquidity which, in turn, negatively impacted the businesses of their suppliers. AmCham offered both for- mal and informal consultations for our members, direct support for their businesses and modified internal poli- cies, all aimed at easing the economic pressures on our members and helping our members share strategies for dealing with the economic downturn. In a year when most businesses aggressively reduced their costs, virtu- ally all AmCham members maintained their memberships in AmCham, indicating the high value they place on our association and services.

    ELENA ALISTAR: MODEL DE VERTICALITATE ŞI CONŞTIINŢĂ NAŢIONALĂ Conf. univ. dr. Rodica SOLOVEI, Institutul de Ştiinţe ale Educaţiei, Chişinău Abstract. Elena Alistar was born in 1873, in Vaisal, Ismail district, in a priest’s fami- ly. She studied at the primary school from Congaz village, district Cahul, at the Eparchial School for Girls of Chisinau, and at the Faculty of Medicine of University of Iasi. She was ac- tively involved in the Bessarabian national liberation movement in 1917-1918. Elena Alistar founded Women’s Cultural League in Bessarabia and became its representative in Country Council. She voted for the Union of Bessarabia with Romania on March 27th 1918. During the interwar period she was the director of the Eparchial School of Girls of Chisinau, contributing to the transforming of this educational institution into an elite school. After June 28, 1940, she took refuge in Romania, living for a period in Iasi, then being sent by the communist regime in Pucioasa, Dâmboviţa district. She died in 1955. Elena Alistar wrote Amintriri din anii 1917/1918, which was published in magazine Pat- rimoniu no. 3, 1991 by dr. Ion Ţurcanu. The material is an important primary historical source that can be used in the process of studying the history of Romanians in secondary schools and high schools. Elena Alistar, unica femeie membră a Sfatului Ţării, îşi rezuma crezul în felul urmă- tor: „Trebuie ca orice fiinţă omenească să-şi aducă obolul ei de muncă, inimă, de suflet, de fiinţa lui şi chiar viaţă, pentru ca să contribuie cât de puţin la realizarea aspiraţiilor”.

    Annals of the Academy of Romanian Scientists Series on History and Archaeology ISSN 2067-5682 Volume 10, Number 1/2018 17 MARCH 27, 1918, THE UNION OF BESSARABIA WITH ROMANIA, THE FIRST LINK IN THE MAKING OF THE GREATER ROMANIA Jipa ROTARU Abstract. There are, in the history of peoples, events of great significance and national value. Such an event was on March 27, 1918, when under extreme conditions, under foreign occupation, the Country Council (the legislative body of Bessarabia elected by the people) decided to unite the Romanian province between the Pruth and Dniester with the mother country, Romania. The act of the union of Bessarabia with the country was reckoned by the great historian Gheorghe Buzatu, one of the astral moments of Romanian becoming, along with January 24, 1859, May 9, 1877 and December 1, 1918. The special significance of this event consisted in the fact that, the Union of the Bessarabian people, freely expressed in March 1918, opened the series of three fundamental moments, the plebiscite assemblies in Chişinău, Cernăuţi and Alba Iulia, through which the Romanian people made their full national unity. The Revolutionary-National Movement in Bessarabia in the years 1917-1918, which culminated in the return of the Romanian land between the Pruth and Dniester, self-embedded in the Tsarist Empire more than 100 years ago, during the First World War, in close connection with the Russian revolution that broke out in the spring of 1917, but also with the extensive upheavals in the struggle for self- determination of the oppressed peoples of the three empires: Tsarist, Austro- Hungarian and Ottoman.

  • Science Popularization and Romanian
    1 In the second half of the nineteenth century the notes of Michael Bakunin were printed as Dieu et l’État [God and the State] aiming to hammer a nail both through the authority of supernatural divine forces and in the heart of the state apparatus. Soon in various European peripheries, various anarchist followers brought a third dimension to his credo, namely, to liberate the minds of workers and peasants through means of science popularization. By opposing liberal bourgeois scientifi c discourses, the relationship between science and anarchism was seeking individual self-emancipation, women’s liberation and at the same time, as their popularizing literature managed to yield alternative printing platforms, to construct a critical scientifi c public sphere. Historically, the practice of science popularization and anarchism were both strongly rooted in Enlightenment philosophy within which knowledge stood as an important pillar. Science, however, was perceived by the anarchists as a collective accumulation of facts and observations that a few privileged representatives of the upper class have deprived the populace of means from access to, with the establishment of scientifi c institutions. Thus, in the long run towards state decentralization, the anarchist view was clear: knowledge was 2 power, therefore science should be available for all, regardless of one’s social status or intellectual capabilities.1 S During the 1870s political changes across continental Europe reached their imperialist heights with clashes between the Ottoman and Russian empires as just one example. As a consequence of the oppressive rule of Czar Alexander II, exiled members of the narodnik movement came straight to the city of Iași, with its new university.2 In those days, the two Romanian Principalities of Moldova and Wallachia, were struggling to keep the peace because of social inequalities, high rates of illiteracy, agrarian reforms that kept the peasantry in serfdom, secularization of monastic land, and the modernization of its scientifi c institutions.

    Seria de autor DINU PILLAT Dinu Pillat, fiul poetului Ion Pillat şi al pictoriţei Maria Pillat-Brateş, s-a născut pe 19 noiembrie 1921 la Bucureşti. A făcut clasele primare la Şcoala Clemenţa, continuându-şi studiile la Liceul Spiru Haret din Bucureşti, în a cărui revistă, Vlăstarul, a debutat cu proze lirice şi critică literară. Între 1940 şi 1944 a urmat cursurile Facultăţii de Litere şi Filozofie din Bucureşti, unde a cunoscut-o pe viitoarea lui soţie, Cornelia (Nelli) Filipescu. După absolvirea facultăţii a devenit asistentul profesorului G. Călinescu la Catedra de istorie a literaturii române moderne. Şi-a susţinut teza de doctorat, sub îndrumarea lui G. Călinescu, în 1947, cu studiile Romanul de senzaţie în literatura română din a doua jumătate a secolului al XIX-lea şi Contribuţiuni la biografia lui Ion Pillat. În acelaşi an, în urma unei restructurări pe criterii politice, a fost îndepărtat de la catedră. Între 1950 şi 1956 a lucrat pe un post de casier şi apoi de pontator la cooperativa de praf de sânge Muntenia. În toamna lui 1956, G. Călinescu a reuşit să-l aducă la Institutul de Istorie Literară şi Folclor, al cărui director devenise, pe un post de cercetător. Arestat de Securitate în primăvara lui 1959, este anchetat şi inculpat în aşa-numitul „proces al inte - lectualilor“, în lotul Noica–Pillat; i se dă o condamnare de 25 de ani muncă silnică şi 10 ani degradare civică pentru „crima de uneltire împotriva ordinii sociale“, unul dintre principalele capete de acuzare fiind romanul Aşteptând ceasul de apoi, elaborat în mai multe etape (1943–1944, 1948, 1948–1955), dat spre lectură unor cunoscuţi, inculpaţi şi ei în proces (pierdut în arhivele Securităţii, romanul a fost redescoperit după 50 de ani, fiind publicat în 2010).
