Raja Mohan 21M.775 Prof. DeFrantz From Bronx’s Hip-Hop to Bristol’s Trip-Hop As Tricia Rose describes, the birth of hip-hop occurred in Bronx, a marginalized city, characterized by poverty and congestion, serving as a backdrop for an art form that flourished into an international phenomenon. The city inhabited a black culture suffering from post-war economic effects and was cordoned off from other regions of New York City due to modifications in the highway system, making the people victims of “urban renewal.” (30) Given the opportunity to form new identities in the realm of hip-hop and share their personal accounts and ideologies, similar to traditions in African oral history, these people conceived a movement whose worldwide appeal impacted major events such as the Million Man March. Hip-hop’s enormous influence on the world is undeniable. In the isolated city of Bristol located in England arose a style of music dubbed trip-hop. The origins of trip-hop clearly trace to hip-hop, probably explaining why artists categorized in this genre vehemently oppose to calling their music trip-hop. They argue their music is hip-hop, or perhaps a fresh and original offshoot of hip-hop. Mushroom, a member of the trip-hop band Massive Attack, said, "We called it lover's hip hop. Forget all that trip hop bullshit. There's no difference between what Puffy or Mary J Blige or Common Sense is doing now and what we were doing…” (Bristol Underground Website) Trip-hop can abstractly be defined as music employing hip-hop, soul, dub grooves, jazz samples, and break beat rhythms.

  • Dark Night of the Soul
Danger Mouse And Sparklehorse - Dark Night Of The Soul Uncut has reviewed plenty of obscure albums in its time but this may be a first: an album that doesn’t officially exist. As a result of some undisclosed contractual snafu, EMI put the mockers on Dark Night Of The Soul just as it was being readied for release. Undeterred, Danger Mouse pressed ahead anyway, offering Dark Night… as a limited edition photo book featuring David Lynch ’s “visual narrative” for the project, accompanied by a blank, recordable CD and the not-so-cryptic instruction to “use it as you will”. Though careful not to say as much, Danger Mouse was essentially encouraging us to bootleg his own LP, which by this point had mysteriously surfaced on file-sharing networks. Danger Mouse has form in this area, of course. The Grey Album , his inventive mash-up of Jay-Z and The Beatles , also aroused the wrath of EMI, who held the rights to The White Album . It made his reputation, if not his fortune, so he knows the value of peer-to-peer propaganda. On the other hand, Danger Mouse’s clever feint here may just have succeeded in adding a layer of intrigue to a project which, despite its impressive cast list, is not as fascinating as its creators probably hoped. Take Gorillaz ’s Demon Days, substitute Sparklehorse ’s Mark Linkous for Damon Albarn , and David Lynch ’s murky snapshots of sinister smalltown America for Jamie Hewlett ’s anarchic cartoons, and you’ve got the basic idea of Dark Night… There are some big-name cameos – Iggy Pop , Frank Black , a surprisingly compelling Suzanne Vega – but it’s questionable whether a collaborative free-for-all was the best way to approach a concept album about loss of faith; dark nights of the soul, by their very nature, usually demand to be suffered in isolation.

  • British Music Videos and Film Culture
Scope: An Online Journal of Film and Television Studies Issue 26 February 2014 The Fine Art of Commercial Freedom: British Music Videos and Film Culture Emily Caston, University of the Arts, London In the “golden era” or “boom” period of music video production in the 1990s, the UK was widely regarded throughout the world as the center for creative excellence (Caston, 2012). This was seen to be driven by the highly creative ambitions of British music video commissioners and their artists, and centered on an ideological conception of the director as an auteur. In the first part of this article, I will attempt to describe some of the key features of the music-video production industry. In the second I will look at its relationship with other sectors in British film and television production – in particular, short film, and artists’ film and video, where issues of artistic control and authorship are also ideologically foregrounded. I will justify the potentially oxymoronic concept of “the fine art of commercial freedom” in relation to recent contributions in the work of Kevin Donnelly (2007) and Sue Harper and Justin Smith (2011) on the intersection between the British “avant garde” and British film and television commerce. As Diane Railton and Paul Watson point out, academics are finally starting to recognize that music videos are a “persistent cultural form” that has outlived one of their initial commercial functions as a promotional tool (2011: 7). Exhibitions at the Museum of Moving Image (MOMI) in New York and the Foundation for Art and Creative Technology (FACT) in Liverpool have drawn the attention of Sight and Sound, suggesting that this cultural form is now on the verge of canonization (Davies, 2013).

  • Auralic Merak Monoblock Amplifiers Class-D Magicians
Reviews AURALIC MERAK MONOBLOCK AMPLIFIERS CLASS-D MAGICIANS By Rob Johnson China’s AURALiC, a relative newcomer to the hi-fi industry, has stepped into this crowded scene with some quality products, and the company sets a high bar for itself with each new release. Seeing AURALiC’s new MERAK monoblocks (priced at $5,000 per pair) freshly out of their packaging is a bit like seeing a great tuxedo-wearing magician backstage before a much-anticipated performance. It’s easy to admire the polished outward appearance, but as anticipation begin to grow, it becomes clear that something interesting will happen when the curtain rises, leaving one to wonder if the performance will live up to expectations. Smoke and Mirrors? In every way, these amps offer substantial build quality and beautiful fit and finish. The sleek, brushed metal exteriors of my test pair sport a matte-silver finish—but the modest exterior does not reveal what’s hidden beneath the handkerchief. These mono monsters offer 400 watts of juice into 4 ohms and half of that into 8 ohms. According to AURALiC, the MERAKS’ capacitors hold enough energy to deliver 16 amps of peak current and 900 watts of power. By comparison, my reference amp—a Mark Levinson 335 stereo amp—pushes 500 watts into 4 ohms. From a power perspective, I never feel that my power-hungry Piega P10 speakers are limited with the Meraks in the chain. Not a full Class D design, AURALiC refers to the MERAK as a hybrid design using Class-A signal amplification, switching output stage and linear power supply, sounding surprisingly like another very exciting amplifier that graced our cover a couple of years ago.
