Raja Mohan 21M.775 Prof. DeFrantz From Bronx’s Hip-Hop to Bristol’s Trip-Hop As Tricia Rose describes, the birth of hip-hop occurred in Bronx, a marginalized city, characterized by poverty and congestion, serving as a backdrop for an art form that flourished into an international phenomenon. The city inhabited a black culture suffering from post-war economic effects and was cordoned off from other regions of New York City due to modifications in the highway system, making the people victims of “urban renewal.” (30) Given the opportunity to form new identities in the realm of hip-hop and share their personal accounts and ideologies, similar to traditions in African oral history, these people conceived a movement whose worldwide appeal impacted major events such as the Million Man March. Hip-hop’s enormous influence on the world is undeniable. In the isolated city of Bristol located in England arose a style of music dubbed trip-hop. The origins of trip-hop clearly trace to hip-hop, probably explaining why artists categorized in this genre vehemently oppose to calling their music trip-hop. They argue their music is hip-hop, or perhaps a fresh and original offshoot of hip-hop. Mushroom, a member of the trip-hop band Massive Attack, said, "We called it lover's hip hop. Forget all that trip hop bullshit. There's no difference between what Puffy or Mary J Blige or Common Sense is doing now and what we were doing…” (Bristol Underground Website) Trip-hop can abstractly be defined as music employing hip-hop, soul, dub grooves, jazz samples, and break beat rhythms. -

Dark Night of the Soul
Danger Mouse And Sparklehorse - Dark Night Of The Soul Uncut has reviewed plenty of obscure albums in its time but this may be a first: an album that doesn’t officially exist. As a result of some undisclosed contractual snafu, EMI put the mockers on Dark Night Of The Soul just as it was being readied for release. Undeterred, Danger Mouse pressed ahead anyway, offering Dark Night… as a limited edition photo book featuring David Lynch ’s “visual narrative” for the project, accompanied by a blank, recordable CD and the not-so-cryptic instruction to “use it as you will”. Though careful not to say as much, Danger Mouse was essentially encouraging us to bootleg his own LP, which by this point had mysteriously surfaced on file-sharing networks. Danger Mouse has form in this area, of course. The Grey Album , his inventive mash-up of Jay-Z and The Beatles , also aroused the wrath of EMI, who held the rights to The White Album . It made his reputation, if not his fortune, so he knows the value of peer-to-peer propaganda. On the other hand, Danger Mouse’s clever feint here may just have succeeded in adding a layer of intrigue to a project which, despite its impressive cast list, is not as fascinating as its creators probably hoped. Take Gorillaz ’s Demon Days, substitute Sparklehorse ’s Mark Linkous for Damon Albarn , and David Lynch ’s murky snapshots of sinister smalltown America for Jamie Hewlett ’s anarchic cartoons, and you’ve got the basic idea of Dark Night… There are some big-name cameos – Iggy Pop , Frank Black , a surprisingly compelling Suzanne Vega – but it’s questionable whether a collaborative free-for-all was the best way to approach a concept album about loss of faith; dark nights of the soul, by their very nature, usually demand to be suffered in isolation. -
The Portuguese Guitar: History and Transformation of an Instrument Associated with Fado
THE PORTUGUESE GUITAR: HISTORY AND TRANSFORMATION OF AN INSTRUMENT ASSOCIATED WITH FADO NUNO JOSÉ DOS SANTOS ANAIA CRISTO A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS GRADUATE PROGRAM IN MUSIC YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO JANUARY 2014 © Nuno José dos Santos Anaia Cristo 2014 ABSTRACT Since the mid-nineteenth century the Portuguese guitar has been connected to the fado genre. Over the years, both the instrument and the song genre have experienced significant transformations, at times related to aesthetic changes, at other times conditioned by social, political and economic alterations. This thesis focuses on the historic organological development of the Portuguese guitar, as an instrument associated with fado, and explores how the Lisbon guitar model has been progressively replaced by the Coimbra guitar model (both in practice and iconic symbolism). I argue that this tendency is related to the current new era of Portuguese guitar practice with its origins in the post-revolutionary period lived in Portugal after the political overthrow in 1974. My study is based on the review and analysis of the most recent works on the subject, fieldwork among players and makers, iconographic and archival research, and my own experience as a player and maker of both models of the Portuguese guitar. ii DEDICATION To my parents iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Many thanks to: York University for the 2012 GS-CUPE Unit 1 Graduate Financial Assistance - Dom Award. The Faculty of Graduate Studies for the allocation of the 2012-2013 Fieldwork Fund, without whose generous financial assistance this research would have not been possible; My supervisor Louise Wrazen and secondary reader Judith Cohen for all their encouragement, help and insightful advice throughout this process; My teachers at York University: Rob van der Bliek, Robert Witmer, Robert Simms, Trichy Sankaran, and Sherry Johnson. -

Lisbon Story
LISBON STORY The story starts with a postcard and a cryptic message: “Dear Phil. I cannot continue m.o.s.! S.O.S.! Come to Lisbon with all your stuff a.s.a.p.! Big hug, Fritz.” Who is who? And what do all those abbreviations mean? The S.O.S. of course is obvious, and a.s.a.p. only strengthens the urgency: come as soon as possible. But m.o.s.? Only someone who has worked on a film set before might know that the expression dates back to the early years of sound films and according to legend Erich von Stroheim, who wanted to continue shooting without sound, coined the term “mit out sound”. It soon becomes clear: The postcard comes from the director Friedrich Munroe (Patrick Bauchau) who asks his friend Phillip Winter (Rüdiger Vogler) to come to his aid. Friedrich single-handedly shoots a film in Lisbon and Winter is a sound engineer. He’s stuck: he wanted to shoot a film as if the whole history of film had not taken place. One man alone in the streets, with a crank handle camera, just like Buster Keaton in THE CAMERAMAN. Now he hopes that Winter’s microphone can pull his pictures “out of the darkness” and just save his entire undertaking. The film is a hommage to the city of Lisbon and a bow to the history of film for which 100th birthday it was made. The soundtrack made the group Madradeus world-famous.
