Med., Benha University, Benha, bAnimal Health Research Institute (AHRI), Dokki- c Giza, General Organization for Veterinary Medicine (GOVS), Dokki-Giza, Egypt. A B S T R A C T Diagnosis of the BVDV infection among suspected and apparently healthy cattle at Kaluobia, Giza, Menofeia and Gharbia governorates was done by detection of prevalence of BVD antibodies. A total number of 151/151(100%) and 97/151 (62.25%) of examined sera were positive for BVD antibodies using serum neutralization test (SNT) and competitive immunoenzymatic assay (cIEA), respectively. Examined sera with cIEA detected antibodies against BVDV non structral proteins P80/P125. Detection of BVDV in buffy coat samples using antigen capture ELISA showed that 22/151(14.56%) of the samples were positive for BVDV. Isolation and biotyping of suspected BVDV from buffy coat on MDBK cell line showed that 19/22 of ELISA positive buffy coat samples were cytopathogenic BVDV biotype (cpBVDV) while only 3/22 samples were CPE negative suggesting a non- cytopathogenic BVDV (ncpBVDV) biotype. Inoculated cell culture with no CPE were subjected to IFAT and IPMA using specific antisera against BVDV revealed positive results indicating presence of non-cytopathogenic strain of BVDV. It was concluded that cIEA detected antibodies against non- structural proteins P80/P125 has many advantages over SNT being for rapid diagnosis of BVDV.

MADKOUR (With 8 figures and 5 tables) Manuscript submitted on June 14th 2010, the revised manuscript on March 15th 2011 Abstract A study of the geochemistry and texture of marine surface-sediments in selected areas along the Red Sea coast was conducted in order to assess the possible influence of human activities on the composition of the sediments, to test for anomalous enrichments in heavy metals, and to evaluate and quantify metal release into the sea. Surface sediments reveal extremely high total concentra- tions of Zn (average 21.35 ppm) in Quseir Harbour, Cu (avg. 76.74 ppm) in El-Esh area, Pb (avg. 21.56 ppm and avg. 19.54 ppm) in Safaga and Hurghada Harbours, respectively, as well as Ni (avg. 38.37 ppm), Co (avg. 6.84 ppm) and Cd (avg. 1.33 ppm) in Safaga Harbour. Some samples show very high values of Cu (366 ppm) at El-Esh area.

    Egypt: Palestinian DREF operation n° MDREG006 Pilgrims Stranded in 16 December 2008 Arish The International Federation’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) is a source of un-earmarked money created by the International Federation in 1985 to ensure that immediate financial support is available for Red Cross Red Crescent response to emergencies. The DREF is a vital part of the International Federation’s disaster response system and increases the ability of National Societies to respond to disasters. Summary: CHF 150,000 (USD 129,650 or EUR 94,975) was allocated from the International Federation’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) on 31 December 2007 to support the Egyptian Red Crescent (Egyptian RC) in delivering assistance to Palestinian pilgrims and to replenish disaster preparedness stocks. The first instalment of the DREF allocation was used to replenish the basic disaster preparedness stocks (relief items) of the Egyptian RC depleted to cover the immediate needs of the Palestinian pilgrims who were returning from pilgrimage and were stranded for days in the Egyptian Sinai. Ezzeldin1, Osami S. Rageh2, Mahmoud E. Saad3 @ ABSTRACT: Deep navigation channels have a great impact on adjacent beaches and crucial economic effects because of periodic dredging operations. The navigation channel of the Damietta harbour is considered a clear example of the sedimentation problem and deeply affects the Northeastern shoreline of the Nile Delta in Egypt. The aim of the present study is to monitor shoreline using remote sensing techniques to evaluate the effect of Damietta harbour and its navigation channel on the shoreline for the last 45 years. Also, the selected period was divided into two periods to illustrate the effect of man-made interventions on the shoreline. Shorelines were extracted from satellite images and then the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) was used to estimate accurate rates of shoreline changes and predict future shorelines evolution of 2030, 2040, 2050 and 2060. The Damietta harbour created an accretion area in the western side with an average rate of 2.13 m year-1. On the contrary, the shoreline in the eastern side of the harbour retreated by 92 m on average over the last 45 years. So, it is considered one of the main hazard areas along the Northeastern shoreline of the Nile Delta that needs a sustainable solution. Moreover, a detached breakwaters system is predicted to provide shore stabilization at the eastern side as the implemented one at Ras El-Bar beach.

Flash flood, occurred at the last fiveyears in different Egyptian cities, triggered the need of flood risk assessment study for areas highly affected by those floods. Among those areas, AL-Arish city was highly influenced and therefore need a great attention. AL-Arish city has been attacked by many floods at the last five years; these floods triggered the need of the evaluation flood risk, and an early warning system for the areas highly affected by those floods. The study aims to help in establishing a decision support system for the study area by determining the flood extent of wadiAL-Arish, so the damages and losses can be avoided, to reduce flood impact on the developed areas in and around wadi AL-Arish and to improve the flood management in this area in the future.
