They were all white women, punkers in leath- er jackets and ripped jeans who exuded the ultimate in cool. I thought of my brother as a rock star in his ability to attract so many edgy, beautiful women in a racial category that I knew at the age of nine was out of our family’s league. As unique as I thought my brother’s power of attraction to be, I learned later that numerous Asian stars rocked the stage in my brother’s world of skateboarding. A community of intoxicatingly rebellious Asian and Pacific Islander men thrived during the 1970s and 1980s within a skater world almost always characterized as white, if not blatantly racist. These men’s positioning becomes particularly notable during an era documented as a time of crippling emas- culation for Asian American men. -

Zdeněk Janík, M.A., Ph.D. Abstract This thesis analyzes the origin and development of skateboarding subculture which emerged in California in the fifties. The thesis is divided into two parts – a theoretical part and a practical part. The theoretical part introduces the definition of a subculture, its features and functions. This part further describes American society in the fifties which provided preconditions for the emergence of new subcultures. The practical part analyzes the origin and development of skateboarding subculture which was influenced by changes in American mass culture. The end of the practical part includes an interconnection between the values of American society and skateboarders. Anotace Tato práce analyzuje vznik a vývoj skateboardové subkultury, která vznikla v padesátých letech v Kalifornii. Práce je rozdělena do dvou částí – teoretické a praktické. X GAMES FACTS & FEATS 1995 The inaugural Extreme Games took place in June in Providence, R.I. with the following competitions: • Bungee Jumping • Eco Challenge • In-Line Skating • Skateboard • Sky Surfing • Sport Climbing • Street Luge • Biking • Watersports 1997 Extreme Games changed its name to X Games and moved to the west coast for the first time – hosted by San Diego, Calif. 1999 The X Games moved north to San Francisco, Calif. After attempting the trick for 10 years, Tony Hawk landed the first-ever 900 in Skateboard Best Trick. Moto X made its debut in 1999 and phenom Travis Pastrana was awarded a near-perfect score of 99.0 in Moto X Freestyle. 2000 Moto X Step Up made its first appearance. Dave Mirra became the first BMX athlete to land a double backflip at the X Games. 2001 X Games Seven headed back east to Philadelphia, Penn., where the event hit a major milestone – a first-time indoor venue at the First Union Center. This was the first time X Games took place inside and outside an arena. Moto X Best Trick made its debut. 2002 Mike Metzger made X Games and Moto X history with his back-to-back backflips. Mat Hoffman landed the first no- handed 900 in Vert. 2003 X Games made its third move, this time back to California and landed in Los Angeles with an unprecedented contract lasting through 2009. Becoming the youngest ever X Games gold medalist, Ryan Sheckler landed all of his tricks and won Skateboard Park at just 13 years old. -

Rolley, FASLA, AICP Copyright DESMOND POIRIER 2008 Abstract Much like designing golf courses, designing and building skateboard parks requires very specific knowledge. This knowledge is difficult to obtain without firsthand experience of the sport in question. An understanding of how design details such as alignment, layout, surface, proportion, and radii of the curved surfaces impact the skateboarder’s experience is essential and, without it, a poor park will result. Skateboarding is the fastest growing sport in the US, and new skate parks are being fin- ished at a rate of about three per day. Cities and even small towns all across North America are committing themselves to embracing this sport and giving both younger and older participants a positive environment in which to enjoy it. In the interest of both the skateboarders who use them and the people that pay to have them built, it is imperative that these skate parks are built cor- rectly. Landscape architects will increasingly be called upon to help build these public parks in conjunction with skate park design/builders. At present, the relationship between landscape architects and skate park design/builders is often strained due to the gaps in knowledge between the two professions. -

Brooklyn, NY/Aug 16, 2013—From Friday, September 6 through Thursday, September 12, BAMcinématek presents Skateboarding is Not a Crime, a 24-film tribute to the best of skateboarding in cinema, from the 1960s to the present. The ultimate in counterculture coolness, skateboarding has made an irresistibly sexy subject for movies thanks to its rebel-athlete superstars, SoCal slacker fashion, and jaw-dropping jumps, ollies, tricks, and stunts. Opening the series on Friday, September 6 is George Gage’s Skateboard (1978), following a lumpish loser who comes up with an ill-advised scheme to manage an all-teen skateboarding team in order to settle his debts with his bookie. An awesomely retro ride through 70s skateboarding culture, Skateboard was written and produced by Miami Vice producer Dick Wolf and stars teen idol Leif Garrett (Alfred Hitchcock’s daughter plays his mom!) and Z-Boys great Tony Alva. Gage will appear in person for a Q&A following the screening. Two of the earliest films in the series showcase the upright technique that dominated in the 60s. Skaterdater (1965—Sep 23), Noel Black’s freewheelingly shot, dialogue-free puppy-love story (made with pre-adolescent members of Torrance, California’s Imperial Skateboard Club) is widely considered to be the first skateboard movie. Claude Jutra’s cinéma vérité lark The Devil’s Toy (1966—Sep 23), is narrated in faux-alarmist fashion, with kids whipping down the hills of Montreal, only to have their decks confiscated by the cops. -

Skateboarding enters the 2021 Olympic Games As an athletic and artistic endeavor, skateboarding is about to make its debut in the 2021 Olympics. Sky Brown, just turned 13 years old, representing Great Britain There have been world competitions and international skater rankings since 2010. Skateboarding entering the Olympics this year is a big deal. 1. Why might skateboarding not have been included in the Olympics until now? 2. What other sport (with similar moves) are skateboarders often good at? 3. Do you skateboard? (If you do, please help your class with any details that need clarifying in these discussions.) At the Olympics we will see two styles of skateboarding: Street Skateboarding - July 25 and 26, 2021 Athletes complete two runs and five tricks. A trick is executed like a run but only involves a single trick Five judges will evaluate the runs and tricks on a 0 to10-point scale for each run or trick. The highest and lowest scores for each run or trick are dropped, and the remaining three scores are averaged to give a score for each run and trick. Lee Transportation Director Scott Gilbertson responded to rapid fire questions from commissioners on the DOT recommendations to dramatically increase tolls. It has become increasingly difficult to separate legal rhetoric and saber rattling from fact in recent months in the ongoing causeway war between Lee County and the City of Sanibel. The latest recommendation by the Lee County Department of Transportation to double the causeway daily toll from its current $3 to $6 and quadru- ple the discount and transponder prices has sent shock waves throughout the islands and the rest of Lee County. The DOT's Finance Manager Amy Davies says the county needs another $6.5 million annually in order to pull off the financing of the $100 mill- lion project.
