Chadwick Schools develop global citizens with keen minds, exemplary character, self-knowledge and the ability to lead.

ANNUAL REPORT 26800 South Academy Drive, , CA 90274-3997 www.chadwickschool.org 2015-16 OUR GRATITUDE And the gifts that launched 4,000 lives.

In 1935, Margaret Lee Chadwick started on the path to make her educational vision a reality— to establish a K-12 coeducational school whose graduates would develop keen minds, exemplary character, self-knowledge and the ability to lead. Soon, transformative gifts from Frank Vanderlip, Sr., and Fred and Edna Roessler put Chadwick School on the map, and the school flourished.

Now in its 80th year, Chadwick boasts campuses in both Palos Verdes and Songdo, South Korea, with more than 4,000 alumni throughout the world. Our alumni include Rhodes and Fulbright ON THE COVER scholars, research scientists and doctors, visual and performing artists, Olympians, authors, Director of the Upper School Mark Wiedenmann, Gabi Martinez ’18 and Myles Rosenzweig ’18 and leaders in business, law and technology.

With every entering Chadwick student and family, the impact of the original gifts—and those of all of our generous parents, alumni, trustees, faculty and friends—increases. Our gratitude grows as well for each member of the Chadwick community whose support brings the school’s mission to life. 2015-16 ANNUAL REPORT 3 AT OUR CORE Shared values and a supportive community.

Lori and Cedric Penix – parents of Cole Penix, Class of 2022

“Chadwick felt like a marriage of core values for us. The Chadwick community believes in the same things we do—respect, responsibility, honesty, fairness and compassion—and that was one of the biggest factors for us in choosing Chadwick for our son as a kindergartner.

Now that he’s in Middle School and we see all the opportunities Cole has in sports, performing arts, Outdoor Ed and Round Square, we couldn’t be happier.

“Chadwick’s Middle School is an ideal mix of opportunities and responsibilities. The teachers and administrators carefully guide students in how to make good choices as they enjoy more freedom.”

With every new experience, he becomes more confident. We are happy to support Chadwick as admission volunteers and Annual Fund donors so that other children can benefit from a Chadwick education.”

12 CHADWICK SCHOOL 2015-16 ANNUAL REPORT 13 A SPIRIT That you can’t help but embrace.

“I decided in my first year at Chadwick that I wanted to be a schoolteacher. Opportunities to be part of programs that year working with younger children, even as a fifth-grader, were a big factor in my decision. Reading with Mrs. Chadwick in the Village School, and seeing the kind of teacher she was, sculpted my dreams of becoming an educator in a very positive way. One of the main strengths of Chadwick is the individual attention teachers can provide to students. Small classes allow us to know our students personally, building on their strengths and supporting them in their challenges. That’s the kind of teacher I wanted to become and still strive to be every day.”

Gus Sartorius, Class of 1972 – Village School Teacher

24 CHADWICK SCHOOL 2015-16 ANNUAL REPORT 25 FOR LIFE And the love of students.

“The Leavenworth Library touches all grades, K-12, so as librarians we see everything that’s going on in Chadwick’s classrooms and programs. We see all the different opportunities the students have, and it’s amazing. Chadwick never stands still. The faculty and administration continue to innovate and make the school better and better. And for every student at Chadwick, there’s an adult— a teacher, coach or advisor—who cares deeply about them. My daughters had wonderful experiences here. They learned to be independent thinkers, to be confident and have courage. If you believe in something, if you treasure it, then you support it. For me, that’s Chadwick.”

Jane Terry – Chadwick Upper School Librarian and Alumni Parent

“Chadwick parents value what we do as educators and support TOTAL GIVING TO THE ANNUAL FUND: us in so many ways. I’m thankful for all they do as volunteers, program boosters and donors.” $1.72 Million

48 CHADWICK SCHOOL 2015-16 ANNUAL REPORT 49 PROUD To be given the opportunity.

“Chadwick is an awesome community. Everyone is so welcoming and open to new people. It's amazing that the students are all very different, but they also accept each other for who they are. The two-day ninth-grade orientation really helped me open up and get to know people even though I was nervous about starting at a new high school. The academics are definitely challenging, but the teachers are always available to help you and really want to see you succeed. I’ve had a great experience so far.”

“I really like the positive energy here and how people include each other in everything.”

56 CHADWICK SCHOOL 2015-16 ANNUAL REPORT 57 Frances J. and Frank L. Johnson Legacy Society

Many people—some young, some old—have already made the decision to include Chadwick School in their family’s estate plans. Why? For some, it’s the lifelong memories built while spending time on the Chadwick campus. For others, it’s the desire to ensure that the Chadwick legacy remains strong for future generations. Regardless of the reason, the benefits of making a planned gift and thereby joining the Johnson Legacy Society remain the same: a strong financial future for Chadwick and significant tax benefits for the donor and his or her family.
