Religious Minorities in Pakistan
Abdul Majid* RELIGIOUS MINORITIES IN PAKISTAN Abstract The Constitution describes Pakistan as an “Islamic State”. It is a predominately Muslim State but there are several non-Muslims groups living here as citizens. Pakistan’s Constitution stands for equality of all citizens irrespective of religion, caste, region, tribe language and gender. Islam the state religion of Pakistan stands for respect and toleration for all religions. This paper examines the population and constitutional position of religious minorities in Pakistan. It also provides a general picture of major religious communities the Hindus, the Christians and the Sikhs. The paper also explains the Ahmadya community was declared a minority in September 1947. Despite the handicap of small population, Pakistan’s religious minorities have freedom to practice their religion and pursue their cultural heritage. Key Words: All India Muslim League, PPP, 1973 constitution, Lahore resolution, Jammat-e-Islami, Makkah, Pakistan Hindus Welfare Association Introduction All resolutions of the All India Muslim League since 1940 made categorical commitments for granting religious and cultural freedom to all religious minorities. In Pakistan Minority community is able to assert that it is completely safe. For all those who are guided by reason and humankind’s becoming a modern, civilized and responsible state. The ethnic communities and diverse cultures included Punjabi, Baloch, Sindhi, Seraiki and similarly beside Islam, the believers of Hindu, Sikh, Christian and others religious were also living in Pakistan. The cultural diversity of the country is under threat and religious minorities and various ethnic communities are being denied rights and Identity. Pakistan was established in August 1947 as a homeland for the Muslims of British India. -

[email protected] Received: 27-06-2020 Accepted: 01-08-2020 ABSTRACT Philosophy and Education both are incomplete without each other. Education is the practical side of philosophy or conversely philosophy is the theory of education. A philosophy of education is a set of beliefs about education as to what should be done in education and what the outcome of education should be. Anyone who wishes to make educational decisions ought to have a philosophy of education. As Fitzgibbons notes, educational philosophy usually contains two distinct kinds of beliefs, namely (i) Empirical beliefs (ii) Philosophical beliefs. Indian education system as such it is practiced so far is mainly based on western philosophy. However, in our own country quite a number of enlightened people have given vent to their thoughts with respect to the type of education system that suits India. Among them the prominent thinkers include Swami Vivekananda, Sri Aurobindo, Rabindranath Tagore, Gandhiji, Annie Besent and J. Krishnamurti. Almost all of them had a holistic view of education which suited the Indian condition. So here an attempt has been made to compare the Educational Philosophy of Aurobindo and J.Krishnamurty to present their views, philosophy, and principles of teaching, aims of education and its implications. Srinivas Assistant Professor of English Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Technology Hyderabad India Abstract The journey of the Indian dramatic art begins with classical Sanskrit drama. The works of the ancient dramatists Bhasa, Kalidasa, Bhavabhuti and others are the products of a vigorous creative energy as well as sustained technical excellence. Ancient Sanskrit dramatists addressed several issues in their plays relating to individual, family and society. All of them shared a common interest— familial and social stability for the collective good. Thus, family and society became their most favoured sites for weaving plots for their plays. Ancient Sanskrit dramatists with their constructive idealism always portrayed harmonious filial relationships in their plays by persistently picking stories from the two great epics Ramayana and Mahabharata and puranas. The paper examines a few well-known ancient Sanskrit plays and focuses on ancient Indian family life and also those essential human values which were thought necessary and instrumental in fostering harmonious filial relationships. D. D. KOSAMBI ON HISTORY AND SOCIETY PROBLEMS OF INTERPRETATION DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY UNIVERSITY OF BOMBAY, BOMBAY PREFACE Man is not an island entire unto himself nor can any discipline of the sciences or social sciences be said to be so - definitely not the discipline of history. Historical studies and works of historians have contributed greatly to the enrichment of scientific knowledge and temper, and the world of history has also grown with and profited from the writings in other branches of the social sciences and developments in scientific research. Though not a professional historian in the traditional sense, D. D. Kosambi cre- ated ripples in the so-called tranquil world of scholarship and left an everlasting impact on the craft of historians, both at the level of ideologi- cal position and that of the methodology of historical reconstruction. This aspect of D. D. Kosambi s contribution to the problems of historical interpretation has been the basis for the selection of these articles and for giving them the present grouping. There have been significant developments in the methodology and approaches to history, resulting in new perspectives and giving new meaning to history in the last four decades in India. Political history continued to dominate historical writings, though few significant works appeared on social history in the forties, such as Social and Rural Economy of North- ern India by A. N. Bose (1942-45); Studies in Indian Social Polity by B. N. Dutt (1944), and India from Primitive Communism to Slavery by S. A. Dange (1949). It was however with Kosambi’s An Introduction to the study of Indian History (1956), that historians focussed their attention more keenly on modes of production at a given level of development to understand the relations of production - economic, social and political. -

Panhwar (2018) Introduction by the Editor A connected account of the principal events of Anglo-Indian history from the seventeenth century to the present time is given in this volume. The presentation, though concise, affords a broad view of the rise of British power in the East and makes clear the causes that led to England’ssupremacy. The first chapter reviews in a brief manner the main current of events in India’s development prior to the seventeenth century and forms a convenient supplement to the two preceding volumes, and the succeeding chapters trace the chief historical movements, era by era, down to the present time. The chronological sequence has been indicated throughout the work, but care has been taken not to overload the text with unnecessary dates. Lack of space compelled the author to forego treating several historic incidents, though important, because they have a less direct bearing upon the main theme – the expansion of British dominion in India. Considerations of space also forbade elaborating upon the details of certain well- known events, but room was gained in that way for the important chapter which brings the history down from the time of the Mutiny to the Durbar of King Edward, as well as for the concluding chapter on Britain’swider dominion in Asia. -

HIT 1711 1 1 1 l..IliVl JL mli If ■ 111 THE ICONOGRAPHY OF SUN GOD AND ASSOCIATED FEATURES ICONOGRAPH OF THE SUN- GOD AND ASSOCIATED FEATURES Iconography is the offspring of the ideas and craving of man to give a form to the formless! It is the concrete realization of the process of anthropomorphisation or humanization of the divinities. The worship of Surya, the light ' incarnate is perhaps the most ancient/ most impressive and the most popular one and realizing him in the iconic form is perhaps the most interesting one in the process. In the initial stage the sun-god was worshipped in his natural atmospheric form as is clear from all available sources. Different potteries, seals, sealing etc of the time represented his symbolically. But with the passage of time and with the gradual development of mankind, we notice the transformation of the Sun from its atmospheric and symbolic form to anthropomorphic figures. The available literary sources and the actual specimen of solar representations are unanimous on the fact that the anthropomorphic representation of the sun-god was preceded by the symbolic representation on coins and seals1. The non prevalence of the iconic tradition of the sun during the Rg. Vedic and later vedic phase is attached by the description of the Rg-Veda and the later - vedic texts1 • themselves. They do not give any reference to the image of the sun, on the other hand the Brahamanas3 give direct references to the symbolical depiction of the sun-god, not to his human form. The.Mahabharata and the Ramayana give4 us information about the complete anthropomorphisation of the Sun, but they contain no evidence for his iconic tradition.
