Ask me not thou, can I no thought afford Mirth to create or sadness to beguile: Thou smil’st so sweet ere I have spoke a word, Why should I speak a word to make thee smile? (Darley 1908, 452) The point of these lines is ostensibly the neatness with which the speaker’s ‘dulness’ is converted into fluent flattery, but their transparent allusion to the condition that habitually prevented Darley from speaking in company is probably a greater source of interest. -

University of South Carolina October-November. 2008· FOREWORD This exhibition welcomed to the University the Thirty-Ninth Annual Meeting of the Victorians Institute, a two-day conference bringing to Columbia nearly a hundred Victorian scholars from the south-east and across the United States. So many of the great writers of the Victorian age are still well-known names that myriads of others get overlooked or neglected. The University of South Carolina's Department of Rare Books & Special Collections has first editions and even manuscript material from many of the best-remembered Victorian writers, but it also preserves the writings of others who are now almost forgotten. In some cases, such lesser-known items may be even rarer than long-sought-after first editions by the most famous names. The current exhibition juxtaposes work by major Victorians, such as Charles Dickens, Alfred Tennyson, Charlotte Bronte, and George Eliot, with the work of some of these other · writers who deserve to be better-known. -

Ed., M.A. SUPERVISOR: Dr. Peter Walmsley NUMBER OF PAGES: ix, 334 11 Composing Themselves: Music, Morality, and Social Harmony in Women's Writing, 1740-1815 This interdisciplinary thesis examines rare poetic, didactic, fictional, and musical texts written by women in latter eighteenth-century Britain for instances of and resistance to contemporary perceptions of music as a form of social control. The opening chapter defines and historicizes the term "social harmony," by discussing neoclassical views of musical affect as productive of beneficial social behaviours and gender definition. By delineating canonical aesthetic theorists' influence upon women writers and musicians and assessing music's place in women's moral education, this chapter complicates the idea of separate public and private spheres of cultural achievement and introduces expanded views of women's agency as composers and performers. Next, the thesis appraises women's engagement with charity, musically enacted, through formal musical and textual analysis of hymns, songs, and benefit performances and publications. It marks the productive intersection of patronage and charity for women, who could articulate divergent responses to such idealized or stereotyped objects of pity as prostitutes and madwomen and benefit materially from so doing. -

In his own age, he was respected as a man of letters, educator, art critic, poet, friend of Alfred Tennyson, and editor of The Golden Treasury of the Best Songs and Lyrical Poems in the English Language, first published in 1861. This dissertation attempts to make good that neglect in two ways: firstly, through an analysis of his life and times, an assessment of his writings as an art and literary critic, an examination of his considerable corpus of original poetry, and the compilation of the first comprehensive bibliography of his own publications. -

The most famous and the oldest of the charity’s awards is the PDSA Dickin Medal. It acknowledges outstanding acts of bravery displayed by animals serving with the Armed Forces or Civil Defence units in any theatre of war, worldwide. The Medal is recognised as the animals’ Victoria Cross and is the highest British honour for animal bravery in military conflicts. The medal was instituted in 1943 Maria Dickin. Maria Dickin CBE PDSA owes its foundation to the vision of one woman - Maria Elisabeth Dickin - and her determination to raise the status of animals, and the standard of their care, in society. During the First World War, Maria Dickin CBE worked to improve the dreadful state of animal health in the Whitechapel area of London. She wanted to open a clinic where East Enders living in poverty could receive free treatment for their sick and injured animals. Left: Despite the scepticism of the Establishment, Maria Dickin opened her free 'dispensary' in a Whitechapel basement on Saturday 17th November 1917. It was an immediate success and she was soon forced to find larger premises. Photo PDSA. Within six years this extraordinary woman had designed and equipped her first horse-drawn clinic and soon a fleet of mobile dispensaries was established. PDSA vehicles soon became a comforting and familiar sight throughout the country. With success came increased attention from her critics at the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and the Ministry of Agrigulture. -

Library Notes Of Publishing, Polkas, and Prudery: A Restored Letter by Thomas Hood John Spalding Gatton In March 1980 the Special Collections Department of theM. I. King Library purchased from GeorgeS. MacManus Company, Philadelphia, an unsigned, holograph letter by the English poet Thomas Hood (1799-1845). This letter joins the library's extensive holdings of autograph letters by major and near-major nineteenth century British authors, among them, Sir Max Beerbohm, Charlotte Bronte, Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning, Sir Richard Burton, Charles Dickens, James Anthony Froude, Richard Le Gallienne, Harriet Martineau, and William Makepeace Thackeray.1 While focused on the varied problems of publishing a monthly magazine, the Hood letter also provides an intimate, personal perspective on important concerns of the age: the tension between the Established Church and Nonconformist sects; the fascination with utopian and socialistic systems; and contemporary attitudes toward modesty. -
