This volume is but a humble attempt to a to estimate give popular sketch of the man ; as far as possible the value of his contributions to life to contemporary thought and ; present within brief limits a picture of what he was and what he has done. To relate the story of the origin of this book and how I have been led to undertake the work of its Editor, would be an apology to myself rather than to the public ; but I may say that the task was not sought by, but was offered to^ me. At the time of the Professor's death I tried! in a sermon to point the lessons and the signifi- 959G34 cance of his life. Much of this sermon is included in the introductory chapter, and with slight alterations, is printed as it was delivered. -

Lucien Broca was a Frenchman who came to London to work for Antoine Chatelin, and from 1876 to 1889 he was in partnership with Simon Kaufmann. From 1890 he appears under his own name in Shaftesbury Avenue, and in 1901 he was at Percy Street, calling himself an "Art Binder". He was recognised as a superb trade finisher, and Marianne Tidcombe has confirmed that he actually executed most of Sarah Prideaux's bindings from the mid-1890s. In 1921 Frederick Page collected and published a large uumber of Patmore's latest essays under the title of Courage~ Politics and other Essgys, while Osbert Burdett published a microscopic examination of the Patmorean theme under the title The Idea of Patmore. The numerous articles commemorating the centenary of Patmore's birth were followed in 1924 by a biography of his daughter Emily, a religious of the Holy Child Jesus, whose life is a kind of commentary on the odes of ~ Unknown ~· Frederick Page's study of Patmore's poetry appeared in 1933. -

In 1971, Philip Larkin made a rare excursion into academic writing, while editing his Oxford Book of Twentieth Century English Verse.Hissubjectwasthemostsuccessfullyricanthologyin Downloaded from literary history: The Golden Treasury, compiled by Francis Turner Palgrave and Alfred Tennyson. Published during his time at All Souls College, Larkin’s article described A. E. Housman’s no less than forty-one neat deletions in his copy of the anthology, alongside Housman’s heavy aesthetic interventions.1 Three years later, it was revealed that T. S. Eliot had used The Golden Treasury inhisyearsasanextensionlectureronModernEnglish http://litimag.oxfordjournals.org/ Literature.2 The anthology was extensively annotated by its many poetic owners, beginning with Thomas Hardy and stretching well into the twentieth century, offering a link between Victorian and Edwardian literary tastes. Yet for all its importance, no proof, trial or revision copies have previously been revealed, either in Palgrave’s hand, or in that of Tennyson. This article presents a rediscovered revision copy of The Golden Treasury in Tennyson’s library, and excavates its significance for the anthology’s textual history. By considering the copy’s annotations, the article sheds new light on Tennyson’s poetic influences, and on his at Cambridge University Library on January 4, 2017 aesthetic control over the formation of a Victorian literary canon. Of the nineteenth century’s great versifiers, Tennyson was among the least prolific of literary critics.3 What survives in The Golden Treasury is his most prolonged and revealing judgment on the full span of English verse. -

Cecil Frances Humphreys was the daughter of Major John Humphreys, a Norfolk man by birth. The Major served with distinction in the Royal Marines, and was present at the Battle of Copenhagen. He used to tell with pride how he had seen Nelson move into action and heard him cry to Captain Inman as he passed by, " Well done, Harry ! " Major Humphreys be came a landowner in Wicklow and Tyrone, and an extensive land-agent in the north of Ireland, where he resided for many years at vi PREFACE Miltown House, near Strabane. Ask me not thou, can I no thought afford Mirth to create or sadness to beguile: Thou smil’st so sweet ere I have spoke a word, Why should I speak a word to make thee smile? (Darley 1908, 452) The point of these lines is ostensibly the neatness with which the speaker’s ‘dulness’ is converted into fluent flattery, but their transparent allusion to the condition that habitually prevented Darley from speaking in company is probably a greater source of interest. -

ABSTRACT Genius, Heredity, and Family Dynamics. Samuel Taylor Coleridge and his Children: A Literary Biography Yolanda J. Gonzalez, Ph.D. Chairperson: Stephen Prickett, Ph.D. The children of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Hartley, Derwent, and Sara, have received limited scholarly attention, though all were important nineteenth century figures. Lack of scholarly attention on them can be blamed on their father, who has so overshadowed his children that their value has been relegated to what they can reveal about him, the literary genius. Scholars who have studied the children for these purposes all assume familial ties justify their basic premise, that Coleridge can be understood by examining the children he raised. But in this case, the assumption is false; Coleridge had little interaction with his children overall, and the task of raising them was left to their mother, Sara, her sister Edith, and Edith’s husband, Robert Southey. While studies of S. T. C.’s children that seek to provide information about him are fruitless, more productive scholarly work can be done examining the lives and contributions of Hartley, Derwent, and Sara to their age. This dissertation is a starting point for reinvestigating Coleridge’s children and analyzes their life and work. Taken out from under the shadow of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, we find that Hartley was not doomed to be a “child of romanticism” as a result of his father’s experimental approach to his education; rather, he chose this persona for himself. Conversely, Derwent is the black sheep of the family and consciously chooses not to undertake the family profession, writing poetry. -

In his own age, he was respected as a man of letters, educator, art critic, poet, friend of Alfred Tennyson, and editor of The Golden Treasury of the Best Songs and Lyrical Poems in the English Language, first published in 1861. This dissertation attempts to make good that neglect in two ways: firstly, through an analysis of his life and times, an assessment of his writings as an art and literary critic, an examination of his considerable corpus of original poetry, and the compilation of the first comprehensive bibliography of his own publications.
