Each of them has several of these qualities* the most common are belligerence, boastfulness about family and country, claims to descent from Irish kings, brogue speech, tendency to distort facts, fondness for drink, and self-delusion, A comparison of his fictional characters with Thackeray* observations in his Irish Sketch Book reveals that the author deliberately exaggerates the eccentricities of Irishmen for his fictional purposes. The Sketch Book is a fairly unbiased account of the country and its citizens and is often complimentary to the Irish, Thackeray*s portrayal of Irish characters in his novels and stories derives in part from a literary stereotype for which such nineteenth-century Irish writers as Charles Lever are largely responsible. Thackeray*s experiences with Irish acquaintances also contributed to his delineation of his characters. Most significant are his association in his professional life with Irish writers, and in his personal life with his wife*s relatives, the Shawe family. Most of Thackeray*s Irishmen, and some of the women, are comic characters, following the literary tradition Of the stage Irishman. They ran9e from extravagant a"d fanciful ii characters in his shorter works, such as Mrs* Perkins1 s Ball, a Christmas book, to almost equally extravagant but realistic Irishmen in the novels. -

Early Victorian London was expanding at a furious pace. Much of the new suburban housing consisted of cheap copies of Georgian neo-classicism. At the same time a large part of the city’s centre, a substantial proportion of which had been rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1666, had fallen into decay. The alarming pace of change in the built environment was mirrored by that in the political realm. The threat of revolution, it was widely believed, could only be ended by a significant programme of reform but there was no consensus as to whether that should be essentially institutional, financial or moral. In these circumstances the past, and its material evidences, came to play a prominent role in the public imagination, as either a source of vital tradition or of dangerous vice and complacency. -

Kendrick The College of Wooster Victims of Downing Street: Popular Pressure and the Press in the Stoddart and Conolly Affair, 1838-1845 by Sarah Emily Kendrick Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements of Senior Independent Study Supervised by Professor Johnathan Pettinato Department of History Spring 2016 Abstract During the summer of 1842, Emir Nasrullah of Bukhara, in what is now Uzbekistan, beheaded Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Stoddart and Captain Arthur Conolly, two British officers sent to his kingdom on a diplomatic mission. Reports of the officers’ deaths caused an uproar across Britain, and raised questions about the extent to which Britons abroad were entitled to government protection. Historians have generally examined the officers’ deaths exclusively in the context of the Great Game (the nineteenth century Anglo-Russian rivalry over Central Asia) without addressing the furor the crisis caused in England. -
The Thanatic Corporeality of Edward Onslow Ford's Shelley Memorial

Since its unveiling in 1893, Edward Onslow Ford's memorial to the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley has been a disconcerting presence at University College (figs. 71, 77-81). Often met with derision, the Shelley Memorial has suf fered perennial undergraduate pranks, vandalism, and recurring attempts to bury - or at least move - this uneasy and awkward body. In art-historical accounts of the period, the work has been quietly passed over despite its importance to late Victorian sculpture and criticism.' All of this squeamishness, however, is precisely the point. Almost a century before the corpse would be explored by sculptors like Paul Thek, Robert Gober, or Marc Quinn Edward Onslow Ford brought the viewer face to face with thanatic corporeality. Ford used the commission for the ShelleyMemorial to formulate a polemical contribution to the on-going debates about the propriety and potential of sculptural verisimilitude. He employed the corpse as the embodiment of realism itself and made the figure of Shelley its poetic allegory. In this work he posited a highly self-conscious and self-reflexive articulation of verisimilitude and its overlap with the materiality of the sculptural object. Despite the fact that he would become one of the pillars of the sculptural renaissance in the 1880s and 1890s, Ford had little of the formal training in sculpture from which his col leagues benefited. -

The Monument Question in Late Habsburg Austria A Critical Introduction to Max Dvořák’s Denkmalpflege Jonathan Blower Doctor of Philosophy The University of Edinburgh 2012 Abstract The present thesis is a critical introduction to a body of writings on heritage conservation by the Czech-born art historian Max Dvořák (1874–1921). From 1905 onwards, Dvořák was both professor of art history at the University of Vienna and Conservator General at the state institution responsible for heritage conservation in Austria: the ‘Royal and Imperial Central Commission for the Research and Preservation of Artistic and Historical Monuments’ (est. 1850). His published and archival texts on the subject are presented here for the first time in English translation. In this sense, the thesis follows the model of existing scholarship on the visual arts in Vienna around 1900, namely the combined English translations and critical introductions to the writings of Camillo Sitte (Collins & Collins, 1986), Otto Wagner (Mallgrave, 1988) and Alois Riegl (Forster & Ghirardo, 1982).
