Aber die ursprüngliche Heimat der Traubensorte liegt nicht in der Langhe im Herzen des Piemont, sondern weiter im Norden – im Alto Piemonte. Dort erlebt sie als Spanna gerade eine Wiedergeburt. To call the region a geological treasure is to introduce a high drama going back 280 million years, to the spectacular effluvia of the Sesia supervolcano and its subsequent collapse. Continental collisions then churned the volcano’s remains, and after that the glaciers entered the stage, dragging the whole cornucopia slowly across the land, leaving behind distinct pockets of varied soil types—and one of the most fascinating subzonal discussions in wine. The potential of the Alto Piemonte terroirs was well known in the nineteenth century, when the wine culture of Barolo and Barbaresco, with their less-acidic soils, was still being born.

    Piedmont (Piemonte) growing occurs south of the Po Valley, in the provinces of Asti, Alessandria, and Cuneo. Within these provinces, the Monferrato and Langhe hills are planted with vineyards.     PATRIARCA FRANCO Country: Italy Region: Piedmont Appellation(s): Gattinara DOCG Producer: Franco Patriarca Founded: 3 Generations Ago Annual Production: 250 cases Farming: Sustainable It wouldn’t be true to say that the area of Piedmont kown as the “Alto Piemonte” is undergoing a renaissance because the planted acreage is still microscopic compared to a century ago. However, there is starting to be a groundswell of interest and activity in the region that is promising for the wine world as the terroirs are very good. The region is located just southwest of Lake Maggiore in the foothills of the Alps, south of the border between Switzerland and Italy, two hours north of Barolo. Gattinara is probably the best-known wine among the nine DOCs and DOCGs of the Alto Piemonte and one of its only two DOCGs. In the late nineteenth century the vineyards of the Alto Piemonte were Italy’s best known and largest. The vineyard surface at the time of 40,000 hectares was equal to the entire planted surface of all of Piedmont today! As the Langhe area of Piedmont’s wine production surged in the 20th century, led by Barolo and Barbaresco, the Alto Piedmont suffered from a mass industrial exodus that took a vibrant wine producing culture along with it. However, the land is still there, and as the wines of a few ancient artisans and a few new explorers can attest, the potential is important and hopefully economics will support the continued revitalization of the area. It spreads knowledge of the area and promotes events intended to enhance the historical local appellations: two Docg (Ghemme and Gattinara) and eight Doc (Boca, Bramaterra, Colline Novaresi, Coste della Sesia, Fara, Lessona, Sizzano and Valli Ossolane). The wineries associated to the consortium represent almost the entirety of the production; there are brands belonging to the most ancient local tradition together with others which were recently created; rather big wineries along with very small ones. The result of the encounter of these different representations of the industry is excellent and took many wines from Alto Piemonte to gain relevant acceptance and to get to a recognized position both on a national and international level. Alto Piemonte is a hill district, it has always been suitable for viticulture and it benefits from a microclimate ideal for Nebbiolo, the majestic Prince of all Varieties. The high quality of the wines produced here has a long tradition: the mix of an ideal microclimate and the richness of the soil privileges our wines. Our territory is shielded from the cold northern winds by the Monte Rosa, the second highest mountain in Europe; instead during the warm season the fresh winds coming from the glaciers and the valleys bring ventilation and cool temperatures overnight.

    LA PALAZZINA WINERY: In 1986, Leonardo Montà founded La Palazzina winery. The rst vintage bottled was the 1999. The estate, a 17th Century building, belongs to Leonardo’s family since the early 1930s. Leonardo learned how to take care of the vines and how to make wine from his grandmother Maria who used to work in the vineyard together with her husband Carlo. La Palazzina produces Bramaterra DOC (80% Nebbiolo and 20% Croatina, Vespolina, Uva Rara) and Coste della Sesia DOC Rosso (50% Nebbiolo and 50% Croatina, Vespolina, Uva Rara) wines, both belonging to the Nebbiolo wines of the Alto Piemonte region. The Palazzina vineyard extends 4 hectares over the hills of Roasio, Brusnengo and Sostegno at 350 m a.s.l.. Here, the volcanic soil rich in minerals is ideal for cultivating the Nebbiolo, Croatina, Vespolina and Uva rara native grape varieties. The vines are aged between 10 and 70 years old, with a yield of 40 quintals per hectare. The average annual production is 8000-10.000 bottles. The Guyot system is used for pruning. The grape growing is run with special attention to environment, following the guidelines of sustainable agriculture. Winemaking is done in a traditional way, without additives or corrections, with a minimum sultes content. The grapes are hand harvested into small cases. After the destemming and the pressing process, fermentation with maceration takes place in concrete or steel tanks for about 2 weeks for Coste della Sesia, 3 weeks for Bramaterra, with daily pumping over and breaking up of the cap. Then Bramaterra DOC wines are aged in big Slavonian oak tanks for 22/48 months (18 months for Coste della Sesia DOC Rosso) where, during the rst summer, the malolactic fermentation takes place naturally.

    Antonio Vallana e Figlio, Maggiora, Novara, Alto Piemonte, ITALY As DA’s first foray into Italy we have certainly picked an eclectic place to start with Alto Piemonte. We were delighted to be able to work again with Vallana, a producer, much admired since first encountering them at Richards Walford. Alto Piemonte is in the top North West corner of Italy, 100km north of Barolo, heading towards the border with Switzerland. This region, often viewed as Barolo’s poorer neighbour, is a lesser known haven for Italy’s classic Nebbiolo grape, locally known as Spanna. The region suffered badly economically during the two world wars, gradually losing some of its traditional industries and originally had a much larger area under vine, now considerably diminished, spread over lots of tiny parcels, with some sites having disappeared altogether beneath woodland. The region’s wines have seen a renaissance in recent years with more investment in re- establishing and consolidating vineyards, as land can still be purchased relatively much less expensively than in Barolo or Barbaresco. The wines remain at more approachable prices, extremely good value, particularly with their noted longevity in bottle. The name itself Antonio Vallana e Figlio evokes the family’s long and honourable history, based in the heart of the region, in Maggiora and their website proudly proclaims 5 generations in wine. The fifth and current generation is represented by Marina and Francis Fogarty, sister and brother, who have fully taken charge of the winemaking and running of the family estate over the last 10 years. Marina describes things as “in one way nothing has changed, and we are very faithful to our legacy of traditional wines from the region” for which they have many long-standing customers.
