Alan Tanımı: Kültürel Çalışmalar (Müzik Bilimleri) SOCIAL AND MUSICAL FACTORS PREPARING THE COMPOSITE STRUCTURE IN TURKISH POPULAR MUSIC PRODUCTION AND PRODUCTS Abstract The prevalence of repertoire variety, which has the samples of different music types, is seen in products and performances in Turkish popular music market. -

The Turkish Olympics: Festival Into the Gulen
The Turkish Olympics: Festival into the Gulen Movement By Sean David Hobbs Middle East Studies MA Thesis Prepared for: Dr. Helen Rizzo, Thesis Advisor Dr. Sherene Seikaly, First Reader Dr. Amy Austin Holmes, Second Reader Acknowledgements I recognize God, the Essence which moved me and made it possible to complete this thesis. Also I recognize my mother, I owe everything to her. My father was constantly there for me and his guiding words helped calm me as I went through the production of this thesis and the completion of my master’s degree. My uncles Bryan Hobbs and Joe Orler – and the rest of my family – were also helpful in giving me much needed support. Deepest gratitude to Gloria Powers, my NOLA matriarch, who taught me how “to hear that long snake moan.” Finally, Ralph, Father Joe and Sharron were life guides who lit the way and helped focus me toward this track. My advisor Dr. Helen Rizzo deserves a special thanks in that she gave this work focus and form and her kindness and encouragement were fundamental in completion of the thesis. My first reader, Dr. Sherene Seikaly, inspired me to create and criticize my initial fieldwork and she pushed me to grow as a student in her classes and in the writing of this thesis. Dr. Amy Austin Holms, my second reader, thankfully came in at the last moment as a reader when my original second reader had to leave the project. Dr. Holms’ ideas on the crafting and organization of the two ethnographies in this thesis clarified the final message. -

Signature: ………………………………………………………….. Abstract This thesis explores the relationship of music and cultural memory in a migrant community, namely the Turkish diaspora in Berlin, Germany, and the changing patterns of music consumption within generations. Music is a significant agent that helps communities bridge the past and present time and place and carries the material that is used to create cultural memories for communities. This research attempts to put forward how music, as a part of our daily lives, is a part of the social arrangements that structure the operations of memory. In the context of modern diaspora, this study looks at the role of music in producing and shaping cultural memory in Berlin with the community with ties to Turkey, and how it is practiced by three different generations in the Turkish diaspora who experience music as a socially constructive element. The study also considers the extent that Turkish cultural heritage and identity is transmitted via music to the third generation, who were born and raised in Germany, examining the narrative of ‘Turkishness’ being woven into the music production of the third generation Turks. -

This paper argues that this framework is not suitable to understand the music debates in Turkey. Art/popular music (or high/low music) distinction in Western music discourses have reflected a class-based hierarchy of taste. Ottoman-Turkish example differs from this model in many respects. Due to lack of a Western-type aristocracy, land owner ruling class and clergy, Ottoman classical music has developed as a kind of urban music open to all classes of society, exceeding the limits of class-based musical genres and styles. With the start of the Westernization era, however, the East-West distinction reflected in the famous alaturka-alafranga debate has become the yardstick to determine the place of a certain piece of music in the hierarchy of taste built by the Westernizing elites.
