European Scientific Journal February 2015 edition vol.11, No.5 ISSN: 1857 – 7881 (Print) e - ISSN 1857- 7431 FROM MAIN COMPONENT TO EQUAL CITIZEN: RECONSTRUCTION OF THE JA’FARI IDENTITY IN TURKEY Baris Erdogan, PhD Assistant Professor of Sociology, Istanbul Gelisim University/Turkey Abstract The ethnic, sectarian, and political conflicts in Iraq and Syria serve as significant catalysts for Turkey’s Ja’faris to redefine their social identity. This article comprises a sociological analysis of the Ja’fari community who are predominantly Azeri Turks adhering to the Shiite sect. The article addresses the parameters they pursue in order to construct and position their own social identity in light of the developments in foreign and domestic politics in Turkey where the Sunni population constitutes the quantitative and political majority. Since the foundation of the secular Republic up until today, the establishment has pursued the policy of homogenizing citizens via its ideological apparatus based on Sunni Islam references. As a response, Ja’faris have been rebuilding their identity in tandem with the social changes. In order to integrate with the national policies and overcome the barriers that arise from sectarian differences, Ja’faris constantly underscore in the public sphere that they are the founding components of the nation as “Turks” and “Muslim”s. However, Turkey’s foreign and domestic politics during the conflicts in Iraq, and particularly in the post-Syrian crisis has engendered, citing the Ja’fari leader’s own words, a “shocking effect” within the Ja’fari community. Given the new state of affairs, Ja’faris are rebuilding the Ja’fari identity using a dual language: On one hand, they continue to highlight the “superior” Turkish and Muslim identity that is embraced by the unofficial state ideology, and on the other hand, they embark on a quest for a more civilian equal citizenship within social movements. -

www.epc.eu 24 January 2014 01/12/2009 Freedom of religion in Turkey – The Alevi issue Amanda Paul and Demir Murat Seyrek Freedom of religion is a fundamental right that must be protected and respected by states. While Turkey has taken important steps in advancing religious freedoms over the last decade, a number of challenges remain. Turkey’s Alevi Community continues to face serious problems in terms of being officially recognised by the state and in practicing their religion. While Turkey is officially a secular country, Sunni Islam is the unofficial state religion. Despite Ankara being a signatory of several international conventions and treaties that guarantee fundamental freedoms for all, key fundamental rights of Alevis remain ignored by the state. Last September, hopes were raised that a new “democratisation package” would include steps to further their freedoms but it failed to do so, with the government announcing that a ‘special’ Alevi reform package would be unveiled by the end of 2013. This did not happen. Who are the Alevis? After Sunnis, Alevis constitute the second largest religious community in Turkey. While Alevism is frequently categorised under the Shia denomination of Islam, it is significantly different. While, as with Shia Muslims, Alevis consider the Prophet Mohammed’s descendants (12 Imams) as holy, they also see them as philosophic leaders. Philosophy, human development and humanist ideals are important cornerstones of the Alevi belief. Alevi, which means “follower of Ali”, attribute great significance to Sufism and the 12 Imams, with a unique importance given to Ali, the son-in-law of the Prophet Mohammed. -

In this regard, the paper analyzes the concepts on territory, borders and bound in the Turks` society, the indicator of the boundaries for Turkic tribes and the way of expression the world concept on nature and human being of above stated nations. The research findings show that Turks as their descendants Kazakhs had a distinctive vision on environment and the relationship between human being and nature. Human being and nature were conceived as a single organism. Relationship of Turkic mythic outlook with real historical tradition and a particular geographical location captures the scale of the era of the birth of new cultural schemes. It was reflected in the various historical monuments, which characterizes the Turkic civilization as a complex system. -

Thanks to Karakoc, our guide on a Culinary Backstreets tour of the food-obsessed Turkish capital, we do. Hamburg-born and Istanbul-raised — “I see the city like you do, as an outsider, but I can explain it as an insider” — she is both gastro- nome and cultural interpreter on a day-long binge spanning both shores of the Bosphorus. We meet in Karakoy beneath the Roman- esque Galata Tower on a chilly Saturday morning. With her fine features, gamine-cut red hair and theatrical personality, Karakoc reminds me of Shirley MacLaine. “You will see!” she cries as we set off through the alleyways of Turkey’s biggest hardware market, Persembe Pazari. “There will be no elegant restaurants. We will be eat- ing very simple local foods. We want you to have a real, personal experience.” After our quick “commuter breakfast” at Kursunlu Han of tea and simit, the chewy Turkish bagels glazed with grape molasses much needed pick-me-up, Turkish coffee, and and crusted in sesame seeds, we head to the more insights into local lore. -

Chapel Hill 2019 Approved by: Jessica Wolfe Patrick O’Neill Mary Floyd-Wilson Reid Barbour Megan Matchinske ©2019 Jerrod Nathan Rosenbaum ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Jerrod Rosenbaum: Beyond the Bosphorus: The Holy Land in English Reformation Literature, 1516-1596 (Under the direction of Jessica Wolfe) This dissertation examines the concept of the Holy Land, for purposes of Reformation polemics and apologetics, in sixteenth-century English Literature. The dissertation focuses on two central texts that are indicative of two distinct historical moments of the Protestant Reformation in England. Thomas More's Utopia was first published in Latin at Louvain in 1516, roughly one year before the publication of Martin Luther's Ninety-Five Theses signaled the commencement of the Reformation on the Continent and roughly a decade before the Henrician Reformation in England. As a humanist text, Utopia contains themes pertinent to internal Church reform, while simultaneously warning polemicists and ecclesiastics to leave off their paltry squabbles over non-essential religious matters, lest the unity of the Church catholic be imperiled. More's engagement with the Holy Land is influenced by contemporary researches into the languages of that region, most notably the search for the original and perfect language spoken before the episode at Babel. As the confusion of tongues at Babel functions etiologically to account for the origin of all ideological conflict, it was thought that the rediscovery of the prima lingua might resolve all conflict. -

Resulting from his modernization and secularization process, there were several consequences upon Turkish nations in particular that related to social and religious as well as political aspects. This paper discusses some of those consequences in the contexts of modern Turkey. Using a secondary data analysis, published materials written by scholars and writers in the field, the study found that Kemal’s reforms had totally brought a new system of life based on the western style whilst rejecting Islamic tradition and its culture. This includes his policy to terminate the political role of Islam or taking Islam out of politics. Kemal’s modernization could be regarded as one of the main factors for the social and religious changes in modern Turkey. -
