This program enables qualified PharmD students to begin work on the MBA while still enrolled in the PharmD program. Students are allowed to apply to the MBA program during the second semester of SWOSU Employees Instrumental in the Dual Degree Development (from left): Dr. Ken Rose, Dr. Les Crall and Marci Grant, all from the their first year in the PharmD program. The College of Pharmacy is SWOSU College of Professional and Graduate Studies, and Dr. Virgil committed to the success of each of its PharmD candidates and will only Van Dusen, Dr. Dennis Thompson and Dr. David Ralph, all from the recommend students for the dual degree program who are sufficiently SWOSU College of Pharmacy . qualified and motivated. The ultimate goal of the SWOSU PharmD/MBA program is to provide graduates with skills, knowledge, and practical experience needed for career enhancement. As the number of new pharmacy schools continues to increase and place pressure on employment opportunities, such a program as this will provide our pharmacy graduates with the opportunity to enhance their employment options and elevate their employment standing. As alumni, our dual degree graduates will have the opportunity to shape the future of pharmacy through their acquired leadership, management, financial and business skills.

Research and scholarly activity are important components of the faculty and student experience at the SWOSU pharmacy school. The students have research opportunities through enrollment in classes with specific research objectives. Research results are frequently published in journals or in the form of poster presentations at state, regional and national symposiums and meetings. Dr. Faruk Khan, associate professor of pharmaceutical sciences at SWOSU College of Pharmacy, received a $336,254 award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for a research project entitled “Cyclen-based Novel Antimalarial Agents. Current anti-malarial medications are losing their effectiveness against drug-resistant malarial strains, and many have toxic effects on humans as well. The project goal is to develop new anti-malarial medications, derived from an earlier discovery Dr. Khan made regarding cyclen-quinoline analogs, which will be safer and more effective. SWOSU pharmacy students will assist with the research. Dr. Khan has also hired a full time postdoctoral research assistant to assist in this project. SWOSU College of Pharmacy faculty member Dr. Jaehwa Choi had several grants funded, which will further assist with her primary research Dr. Faruk Khan (second from left), has received a $336,254 fields of molecular targeting for the development of chemotherapeutics. Dr. research award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Choi was awarded $20,000 from the Oklahoma-IdeA Network of Biomedical to develop new anti-malarial medications. With Khan are Research Excellence (INBRE) to purchase a microplate reader. A $31,572 (from left): Dr. Dennis Thompson, dean, SWOSU College of grant was funded through the INBRE program large equipment grant Pharmacy; Dr. Prince Amoyaw, postdoctoral research program. With the funding, the COP will receive new cell culture equipment, assistant; and SWOSU Provost Dr. Blake Sonobe. which is necessary for testing and developing new cancer drugs therapeutic treatments. The CPP third floor research lab has been remodeled and work is underway to renovate approximately 1,200 square feet of space in the CPP basement for research lab space (estimated to be completed Fall 2012).

Other Technology Endeavors include the installation of Smartboards and the utilization of the Neehr Perfect electronic medical records system; Dr. Hardeep Saluja spearheaded the purchase of a $65,000 Baxa 2400 MR automatic IV preparation machine for Pharm Care Lab 4; and thanks, in part, to donations from alumni, new electronic balances are now being used by the students in Pharm Care Lab 1. Future COP Endeavors & Enhancements - New COP Endeavors & Enhancements are on the horizon: residency programs, rural pharmacy initiatives, entrepreneurial and leadership programs, healthcare collaborations, plus more. Much of this is provided in the COP Updates and Newsletters, which are currently only available electronically on the SWOSU COP website. To receive the COP e-Updates & e-News, which will include future endeavors and enhancements at the pharmacy school, send your email address to [email protected]. FYI – New COP e-Update coming soon! 9 Southwestern Pharmacy Scholarships Dr. Sheldon D. Webb of Oklahoma City recently established an endowment with the Southwestern Pharmacy Foundation that will provide a $1,000 scholarship each year to a third-year College of Pharmacy student. Webb is a 2008 graduate of SWOSUs College of Pharmacy. He said he understands the expenses that a third-year student faces, especially as they enter the rotation phase of their curriculum. A s a former pharmacy scholarship recipient, I want to extend the same support that I was offered,” Webb said. A Cordell native, Dr. Webb is a former SWOSU homecoming king and was active on campus in several pharmacy organizations as well as the Wesley Foundation and Student Government Association. Webb is a lifetime member of the Pharmacy Alumni Association and PAAC member. He currently works as a Walmart pharmacist. Th e need for scholarships continues to grow, so we are grateful to Dr. Webb for his generosity, said College of Pharmacy Alumni & Development Director Patti Harper. This (Left to right) Patti Harper, Dr. Webb, Dr. David Ralph scholarship endowment will help pharmacy students for years to come.

In addition to the Sheldon Webb Endowed Scholarship, the following scholarships were also recently established: Dr. ElGenia French Memorial Scholarship, Health Express Pharmacy Group Scholarship and Best Value Pharmacies Independent Scholarship. The need for scholarship support continues with the Southwestern Pharmacy Scholarship Campaign, a special fundraising initiative designed to increase the number and amount of scholarships awarded annually by the Southwestern Pharmacy Alumni Foundation to the pharmacy students at SWOSU College of Pharmacy. The Scholarship Campaign goal will: • Enhance the existing scholarship fund with donations to the general scholarship fund. • Create new scholarship endowment funds. Although the SWOSU College of Pharmacys tuition is low by national standards, tuition and related educational expenses continue to be a challenge for our pharmacy students. Every tax-deductible donation will make a difference and your gift will impact the future of the Southwestern College of Pharmacy. You can designate your gift specifically to the Scholarship Fund or to the General Unrestricted Fund to be used where it is most needed. Or, choose one of the other priority areas for this campaign: Academic Enrichment Fund, Endowments, or the Southwestern Pharmacy & History Fund. For more information contact the Southwestern Pharmacy Alumni & Development Office ([email protected] or 580-774-3190).
