Because I am ready today, as I did in the past, to bring any personal sacrifice, I do not demand of any German man to do anything I was not prepared to do myself for four years. There should be no deprivation in Germany that I will not share. My entire life belongs from this moment on to my people. I want nothing else now than to be the first soldier of the German Reich. I have now put on the same uniform that was once my dearest and holiest. I will only take it off after the victory, or else I will not live to see that end. You would then be bound by blind loyalty to them as Fuehrers , as you were to me. Should something happen to party member Hess, I will enact a law that the senate will then elect the worthiest, i.e. the bravest from their midst. As National Socialist and as a German soldier I am going into this battle with a brave heart. My whole life was nothing but one continuous battle for my people, for its renewal, for Germany. This battle was always backed by the faith in this people. -

Ms. Angela Merkel, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Addresses 100th International Labour Conference In the first ever visit of a German Chancellor to the International Labour Organisation (ILO), H.E. Ms. Angela Merkel today addressed the Organization’s annual conference. Speaking to the historic 100th session of the International Labour Conference (ILC) Ms Merkel highlighted the increasing role played by the ILO in closer international cooperation. The G8 and G20 meetings would be “unthinkable without the wealth of experience of this Organisation”, she said, adding that the ILO’s involvement was the only way “to give globalization a form, a structure” (In German with subtitles in English). Since 2007, you have regularly convened in Berlin the heads of the IMF, World Bank, WTO, OECD and the ILO, and urged us to strengthen our cooperation, and this with a view to building a strong social dimension of globalization and greater policy coherence among our mandates. These dialogues, under your guidance, have been followed up actively by the ILO with important joint initiatives with all of them, whose leaders have all addressed the Governing Body of the ILO. You have been a strong voice for a fairer, more balanced globalization in which much needs to be done by all international organizations.” Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany: “Universal and lasting peace can be established only if it is based on social justice.” This is the first sentence of the Constitution of the ILO and I also wish to start my speech with these words, as they clearly express what the ILO is all about and what it is trying to achieve: universal peace. -

Wissenschaftliche Dienste Aktueller Begriff Vor 100 Jahren: Der Mord an Matthias Erzberger Am 26. August 1921 wurde der Zentrumspolitiker Matthias Erzberger bei Bad Griesbach im Schwarzwald bei einem Spaziergang mit einem befreundeten Reichstagsabgeordneten von zwei rechtsradikalen Freikorpsmitgliedern ermordet. Der tödliche Anschlag galt einem der exponier- testen Verfechter der noch jungen Weimarer Demokratie, der als Reichstagsabgeordneter schon vor 1914 entschieden für eine Parlamentarisierung des Kaiserreiches eingetreten war. Matthias Erzberger wurde am 20. September 1875 im schwäbischen Dorf Buttenhausen geboren. Aus einfachen Verhältnissen stammend schloss er 1894 eine Ausbildung zum Volksschullehrer als Jahrgangsbester ab. Schon während seiner zweijährigen Tätigkeit als Lehrerpraktikant wurde seine politische Begabung vom Mitbegründer der württembergischen Zentrumspartei Josef Eckard entdeckt, der ihn zum Eintritt in die Redaktion des katholischen „Deutschen Volksblat- tes“ veranlasste. Neben seiner publizistischen Tätigkeit leitete Erzberger in Stuttgart ein katholi- sches Arbeitersekretariat und gehörte zu den Verfechtern der 1899 gegründeten Christlichen Ge- werkschaften. 1903 wurde er mit 28 Jahren für die Zentrumspartei im Wahlkreis Biberach-Leut- kirch-Waldsee-Wangen als jüngster Abgeordneter in den Reichstag gewählt, wo er zur neuen Ge- neration von Berufspolitikern zählte. Da Reichstagsabgeordnete zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch keine Diäten erhielten, verdiente er seinen Lebensunterhalt als parteipolitisch gebundener Journalist. -

Boston College From European Anti-Jesuitism to German Anti-Jewishness: A Tale of Two Texts “Jews and Jesuits will move heaven and hell against you.” --Kurt Lüdecke, in conversation with Adolf Hitleri A Presentation at the Conference “Honoring Stanislaw Musial” Jagiellonian University, Krakow, Poland (March 5, 2009) The current intense debate about the significance of “political religion” as a mode of analyzing fascism leads us to the core of the crisis in understanding the Holocaust.ii Saul Friedländer has written of an “historian‟s paralysis” that “arises from the simultaneity and the interaction of entirely heterogeneous phenomena: messianic fanaticism and bureaucratic structures, pathological impulses and administrative decrees, archaic attitudes within an advanced industrial society.”iii Despite the conflicting voices in the discussion of political religion, the debate does acknowledge two relevant facts: the obvious intermingling in Nazism of religious and secular phenomena; secondly, the underestimated role exercised by Munich Catholicism in the early life of the Nazi party.iv My essay is an effort to illumine one thread in this complex territory of political religion and Nazism and my title conveys its hypotheses. First, that the centuries long polemic against the Roman Catholic religious order the Jesuits, namely, its fabrication of the Jesuit image as cynical corrupter of Christianity and European culture, provided an important template for the Nazi imagining of Jewry after its emancipation.v This claim will be exhibited in a consideration of two historically influential texts: the Monita 1 secreta which demonized the Jesuits and the Protocols of the Sages of Zion which diabolized the Jews.vi In the light of this examination, I shall claim that an intermingled rhetoric of Jesuit and Jewish wills to power operated in the imagination of some within the Nazi leadership, the most important of whom was Adolf Hitler himself. -

Furthermore, the Allies agreed to reconstruct Germany so a regime like the Nazis could never come to power again. The Allied Powers met at three major summits at Teheran (November 28-December 1,1943), Yalta (February 4-11, 1945), and Potsdam (July 17-August 2, 1945) to discuss the occupation period and reconstruction of all aspects of German society. The policy of denazification was agreed upon by the Big Three, but due to their political differences, denazification took different forms in each occupation zone. Within all four Allied zones, there was a balancing act between denazification and the urgency to help a war-stricken population in Germany. This literature review focuses specifically on how scholars conceptualize the policy of denazification and its legacy on German society. -
