Our philosophy is best explained through our 5-Star-Points of Youth Development, created because we are youth development professionals with high expectations. We believe that every moment of every day at Camp is an opportunity for both campers and team members to positively impact each other’s lives. This is a deceptively simple thing to say, and is a profound mind-set we teach the many children who attend our camp. If you yourself have never attended summer camp, it’s easy to assume the camp experience is an enjoyable form of summer child care, and you would be right—if camp isn’t fun, what’s the point in going? But at Everwood, our purpose extends far beyond simply having FUN. Fun is one of the many results of what we do with our summer camp. This is why we’re so intentional about integrating our 5-Star-Points philosophy into our camp activities and electives. We monitor the many behaviors essential to being a decent human being and successful adult and acknowledge campers when observed demonstrating these behaviors. The core values of Everwood’s 5-Star-Points are: • Independence• Integrity • Inspiration • Teamwork • Friendship Bundled into this system is the concept of intentional camp: Everything at Everwood Day Camp is done with the intention and purpose of furthering our philosophy and mission. WHAT IS A WARM AND FUZZY? At the end of each day, each camper group meets, and counselors reflect on the day and give out the only award we have here at Everwood the 5-Star Camper award. This award goes to the camper(s) who have … demonstrated something unique during the day that reflects their hard work on 1 or more of the 5-Star Points. Each 5-star camper receives their very own Everwood “Warm and Fuzzy” (cute and cuddly little creature they can take with them) along with a “Warm and Fuzzy Note” that describes the behavior that was observed and what kind of character trait that shows. 4 IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER “Partnering with Parents”- Thursday, June 13th , 6:30 - 8pm To keep the lines of communication as clear and open as possible, we invite PARENTS ONLY (no kids) to an open forum with Directors Dane and Jaime Pickles. How will the campers and parents feel during their first week of Camp? Why are there certain rules in place? What is our discipline policy? Learn about our Camp culture and some of the fun traditions we have. Day Camp can seem complicated to kids and parents - electives, swimming, and division leaders, etc so bring all your questions and don’t leave until we … answer every one of them! This conversation is geared toward families that are new to us, but parents of returning campers are welcome! Meet ‘N’ Greet Come out before Camp begins (with your kids) to meet your child’s Group Leader, Counselors, Division Leader and the Camp Nurse (bring any medications). Attendance is optional, but strongly encouraged. st Knowing names and faces makes the 1 day of Camp extra smooth! Tuesday, June 18th, 6:00-8:00pm Thursday, June 20th , 6:00-8:00pm Red Turtles Orange Turtles Blue Turtles Green Turtles Yellow Turtles Purple Turtles st nd Entering 1 Grade Boys and Girls Entering 2 Grade Boys and Girls r d t h Entering 3 Grade Boys and Girls Entering 4 Grade Boys and Girls t h th t h th Entering 7 -10 Grade Boys and Girls Entering 5 and 6 Grade Boys and Girls Family Night Take part in Camp activities with family and friends in a relaxed evening at Camp. Families who have completed their summer season with us, or have yet to begin are also invited to enjoy a wonderful evening with us at Everwood. Allow your child to be your tour guide and proudly share their accomplishments from the summer! Parents, please wear your sneakers! Though we understand that the transition from “unfamiliar” to “familiar” happens rapidly in our Camp world, it’s not always that obvious to campers. There are several things that you can do to help your child feel more comfortable, confident and ready for the summer. Here are a couple of things to think about: √ TALK: Talk to your child about what they are looking forward to doing at camp, and set some achievable goals for their experience. Goals can be activity-based (play Ga-Ga, shoot a bulls-eye in archery) or friendship-based (make a new friend from a different town, connect with a counselor). Make sure you review our website and brochures with your child, and know that you are always welcome to come by Camp to visit and become more familiar with the property itself. Just call the Camp office! √ VISIT: Attend our Meet ‘N’ Greet and Open House events, so that your child can meet our staff and other campers.

A MODERN FAMILY: THE PERFORMANCE OF “FAMILY” AND FAMILIALISM IN CONTEMPORARY TELEVISION SERIES by Jennifer M. Lotz, Chair Professor Susan J. Douglas Professor Regina Morantz-Sanchez Associate Professor Bambi L. Haggins, Arizona State University © Jennifer M. Fogel 2012 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I owe my deepest gratitude to the members of my dissertation committee – Dr. Susan J. Douglas, Dr. Bambi L. Haggins, and Dr. Regina Morantz-Sanchez, who each contributed their time, expertise, encouragement, and comments throughout this entire process. These women who have mentored and guided me for a number of years have my utmost respect for the work they continue to contribute to our field. I owe my deepest gratitude to my advisor Dr. Amanda D. Lotz, who patiently refused to accept anything but my best work, motivated me to be a better teacher and academic, praised my successes, and will forever remain a friend and mentor. Without her constructive criticism, brainstorming sessions, and matching appreciation for good television, I would have been lost to the wolves of academia. One does not make a journey like this alone, and it would be remiss of me not to express my humble thanks to my parents and sister, without whom seven long and lonely years would not have passed by so quickly. They were both my inspiration and staunchest supporters. Without their tireless encouragement, laughter, and nurturing this dissertation would not have been possible.

UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA NOVEMBER 2005 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The authors wish to convey their appreciation and gratitude to a number of individuals who have made significant contributions to this study. At the University of Arizona, Brian Atkinson served as our technology director, and expertly supervised the project’s transition to the digital environment, which required all new equipment for recording, storage, and playback of over 1000 programs. Nic Schoenfeld managed the collection of the program sample adeptly, and Zhongxiang (Edward) Xia devised a sophisticated software interface to track the status of each show from its initial recording to the completion of its coding and analysis. Carey Willets accomplished all administrative and financial aspects of the project helpfully and efficiently. And finally, Priya Raman provided valuable assistance writing many of the scene examples included in the report as illustrations of key content categories. We thank all of them for their efforts and generous contributions. At the Kaiser Family Foundation, Vicky Rideout has been the leader of this project since its inception. This project now ranks as one of the longest-running studies in the realm of media and social effects research, its value growing with each replication that affords stable and precise comparisons of industry trends over time. We greatly appreciate Vicky’s leadership, and the foundation’s continued participation in this research effort.W e also thank Theresa Boston for her excellent supervision of the final report document throughout the publication process.

Branding the Family Drama Genre Formations and Critica[ Perspectives on Gilmore Girls AMANDA R. KEELER Before its debut on October 5, 2000, Gilmore Girls had already made television history. According to an article published in American Demo graphics that year, Gilmore Girls was the "first advertiser advocated show" funded by the Family Friendly Programming Forum (FFPF), a group consisting of major U.S. corporations, who offered up a mil lion dollars to "fund 'family-friendly' script development at the WB," the network that in 2006 partnered with UPN to become the CW ("Television" 2000). Taking into consideration other family-friendly dramatic television series aimed at multigenerational audiences on the CW, such as 7th Heaven (1996-2007) and Everwood (2002-6), one might ask how a program about a single, never-married mom (until the final season), raising her daughter, could constitute family-friendly fare. What particular elements of this Amy Sherman-Palladino cre ation led the FFPF to fund its development? And is "family friendly" a viable genre label? In the context of television programming and criti cism, does genre even matter anymore, considering the hybrid nature of most contemporary series? In this chapter I will investigare what critics have written about Gilmore Girls and how the show has been linked to similar programs in terms of genre classification.

  • The History of Radio in Emanuel County Part I – WJAT Radio, 1950 Thru 1975, Also the Entertainment Activities of the Nancy Auditorium by Rick Paul
The History of Radio in Emanuel County Part I – WJAT Radio, 1950 thru 1975, Also the entertainment activities of the Nancy Auditorium By Rick Paul Swainsboro, Georgia has a rather unique radio history. From its humble beginnings, we were dazzled and entertained by events that only a short time earlier would have seemed unimaginable. The history of WJAT radio, while interesting enough, really cannot be told completely without including the entertainment activities of the Nancy Auditorium. What a thrill it must have been as citizens witnessed our sleepy little town transform from an obscure logging and farming hamlet into one of the five most significant country music venues in the country. Even more exciting, and maybe a little scary for some, when you consider that country music was still new and rock and roll unheard of. Truly amazing! I began collecting information for this piece in the 60s while hanging around the radio station as a typical teenager, fascinated by juicy stories being told about the radio station and its people. Later, after actually becoming an employee and hearing even spicier pieces of station lore, it dawned on me that someone should write this stuff down. Well, here we are all these years later, and alas, not much has been written about WJAT Radio or the events at the Nancy Auditorium. Recently, I felt the time had finally come to put down on paper some of the things I had learned over the years. And so I began, intent on covering all aspects of our radio/entertainment history. I wanted to really dig in, separate fact from fiction, inform the unaware, bring about a greater appreciation for a bygone era and maybe even learn some new facts along the way.

  • Sardonic Humor Is My Way of Relating to the World__ Audience
1 Abstract: There is a lengthy history of teenagers on television, and of teenagers as a television viewing audience. Over the past decade, developments in how technology allows audiences to interact with television have affected both the structure and content of television that features and caters to teenagers. Using specific texts (most notably Gossip Girl (The CW, 2007-2012), Riverdale (The CW, 2017-), and Heathers (Paramount, 2017)) and the paratexts formed by audience members in their interaction online with the original texts and their creators, this thesis seeks to understand how teen television has adapted itself to fit the models created by the internet and its users and the nature of its potential repercussions for the genre and for television in general. 2 “Sardonic Humor is My Way of Relating to the World”: Audience Interaction With Teen Television, 2007 - Present Chloe Harkins Bachelor of Arts Thesis, Film Studies Program 3 Acknowledgements: I would like to first thank my thesis advisor, Robin Blaetz, whose infinite enthusiasm for and faith in this project, as well as her patience in approaching a subject out of her usual realm of study, truly was what kept it going. Thank you to the other two members of my thesis committee; Elizabeth Markovits, who has provided consistent support and massively assisted my growth throughout my four years at Mount Holyoke, and Amy Rodgers, who gave me one of my most rewarding experiences in a class during my last semester. Thank you to all my professors at Mount Holyoke, Hampshire, and Amherst, especially those in media studies who helped me build the understanding of television/the internet/“television and the internet” that became the basis for this work.
