The goal of the journal is to provide a showcase for scholarly writing pertaining to History and Heritage in the Oregon’s Willamette Valley, south of Portland, written by scholars, students, heritage professionals and historians - professional and amateur. The Importance of Public Space as Community Anchors Its purpose is to promote historical scholarship focused on the communities of the area. Each edition is Joy Sears themed to orient authors and readers to widely varied and important topics in Valley history. 4 Willamette Valley Voices’ first edition shares articles about Public Spaces. Public spaces, both built and Dancing its Way into your Heart: Cottonwoods Ballroom 1930-1960 natural, anchor the Valley’s communities and shape and inform community identities. Identity-making Toni Rush and Jim Creighton around community anchors is an important way to reinvigorate city centers and downtowns. Eastside Sewer Interceptor Project: Oak to Antler - $1,375,000 City of Redmond, Redmond, OR The east side of Redmond is poised for significant industrial and commercial growth. The City’s Desert Rise Industrial Park (State Certified, 75 shovel ready acres), Pioneer Business Park (40 acre, incubator lots), Crown Mill redevelopment (70 acre former sawmill), Greenway Business Campus (220 acre ―green-themed‖ re-development) and several other planned development or redevelopment projects exist east of US 97 and the BNSF rail line. Full buildout of the east side industrial development cannot occur without construction of a planned large diameter sewer line which parallels the BNSF rail line and intercepts/collects wastewater effluent from all east side development. The project, known as the Eastside Sewer Interceptor Project, will also have the capacity to serve the potential 900-acre large lot Department of State Land (DSL) project south of the Deschutes County Fairgrounds and Expo Center.

This multi-disciplinary study attempts to address that oversight by focusing on the early brickmakers in „the Oregon Country‟. Using a combination of archaeometry and historical research, this study attempts to make use of a humble and under- appreciated artifact – brick – to flesh out the forgotten details of the emergence of the brick industry, its role in the shifting local economy, as well as its producers and their economic strategies. The area is underlain by over 20,000 feet (6100 m.) of volcanic strata of the probable upper part of the western Cascade Volcanic Group.

    High Elevation Bryophyte Surveys Willamette National Forest Final Report March 2013 Project Objectives Our objective was to survey high priority, high elevation habitat for rocky outcrop and lakeside sensitive and strategic non vascular species on the Willamette National Forest during 2012. Few of these species are documented and most are suspected on the forest. Surveys in this habitat provide information on the range and rarity of these species. All surveys and special status species that were found in surveys (highlighted in red) have been entered into the NRIS TESP Database. Species codes from the USDA PLANTS database are used below for common tree species. Sweet Home District Surveys Surveys were conducted at upper Gordon Lake, Riggs Lake, Don Lake, Silver Lake, Crescent Lake, North Peak Lake, Heart Lake and Gordon Meadows. Cliffs adjacent to lakes were also surveyed. Surveys occurred in August and September, 2012. Surveyors were Ryan Murdoff, Alice Smith, Kate Richards and Anna Bonnette. Collections ranged from 0-10 bryophytes per site.
