LONE FIR CEMETERY EXISTING CONDITIONS, RECOMMENDATIONS, AND FUNDING SOURCES Portland Metro Sustainability Center Lango Hansen Landscape Architects Historical Research Associates KPFF Consulting Engineers Reyes Engineering 2008 Lone Fir Cemetery Existing Conditions Lone Fir Cemetery contains many historical elements which have significance both as defined by the National Register of Historic Places and the Secretary of the Interior. As part of its listing on the National Register of Historic Places, a number of contributing resources (CR) are defined, including the site of the cemetery itself. These contributing resources that were indicated in the National Register submission are indicated as such below. Using the Secretary of the Interior’s “Guidelines for Rehabilitating Cultural Landscapes” a number of character defining elements (CD) have also been indicated. Character defining elements convey the historical, cultural or architectural values of the cultural landscape. Additional items listed below are considered “functional” (F) in that they are more recent additions to the cemetery, and are not contributing resources or character defining features. As part of the master plan of the cemetery, items listed as contributing resources and character defining elements should be sensitively restored and preserved. Items listed as functional elements should be improved to be of consistent quality and materials as used elsewhere in the cemetery. Reichardt ABSTRACT Purpose of the Study: Hoping to gain a better life for their families, Chinese men immigrated to California at the start of the Gold Rush in the mid-19th century. Despite prejudice and anti-Chinese legislation, the Chinese of California were a major force in the shaping of the American West by building the transcontinental railroad and using their farming prowess to establish California as one of the major agricultural giants of the United States. Once pushed from these roles, they moved into urban centers, settling into ethnic neighborhoods where they could maintain their cultural identities.

  • Akron Joins the Roller Polo “Craze” by Cheri Goldner, Librarian
Past Pursuits A Newsletter of the Special Collections Division Akron-Summit County Public Library Volume 16 Number 2 Summer 2017 Akron Joins the Roller Polo “Craze” by Cheri Goldner, Librarian While using the 1906 Akron Beacon Journal index recently, I was surprised to find several pages devoted to citations for articles about college, semi-professional, and professional roller polo. Roller polo, also known as “roller hockey,” “rink hockey,” “hardball hockey,” or “quad hockey,” is a sport that has been around since the late nineteenth century. Played like hockey but on quad roller skates and with a hard rubber ball rather than a puck, it has gone through several periods of popularity. The first recorded hardball roller hockey game was played in 1878 in London, England. It was introduced to the United States in 1882 with the National Roller Polo League in Dayton, Ohio, and the team there soon earned a championship. A February 13, 1883 article in the Topeka, Kansas Daily Commonwealth reported that Topeka’s newly formed polo club had been practicing, adopted a “nobby uniform” and “hoped before the season is over, to have the champions of the league, from Dayton, Ohio, here to give them a game.” The roller polo revival of 1919-1920 featured players Howdy Force and Roland Cioni. Akron The sport enjoyed growing popularity in the early 1900s, Beacon Journal, August 29, 1919. both nationally and locally, as roller skating in general was enjoying a resurgence. Silent film stars Stan Laurel and In this issue Charlie Chaplin reportedly enjoyed playing the game during this time, and a search of the Akron Beacon Journal Getting to Know...Polly Paffilas…………… 3 reveals a huge spike in articles about the sport from 1905- 1908.
