How do we understand ourselves as beings in need of meaning? We are socialized into and live in complex cultures from which we extract the very essence of our identity, but at the same time we also construct these cultures. How is this process accomplished? What is the nature of those cultural processes that provide us with symbolic meaning and vitalize our perception of ourselves within our self-structured and regulated social orders? This book is addressed to these issues. One interesting way of exploring cultures is to examine some of the myriad contrasts that characteristically make up cultures. These contrasts set boundaries, which in turn define the variety of the symbolic-moral universes of which complex cultures are made. In turn, these symbolic-moral universes give rise to and support both personal and collective identities. There are many such contrasts, some more profound than others. There are physical contrasts, such as black/white, day/night, sea/land, mountain/valley, and there are socially and morally constructed contrasts, such as good/bad, right/wrong, justice/injustice, trust/betrayal. The contrast we shall focus on in this book is a major and significant one: between truth and falsehood. This contrast cuts across many symbolic-moral universes because it touches a quality to which we attach central importance--that between the genuine and the spurious. -

Biography of Lee I. Levine Lee Israel Levine was born on Feb. 1, 1939, in Bangor, Maine, to Rabbi Dr. Harry O. H. Levine and Irene R. Levine (née Ginsburgh). He attended the Akiba Academy in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and a public high school in Steubenville, Ohio, where his father served as a congregational rabbi. Summers were spent at Camp Ramah. Lee attended Columbia College in New York, majoring in philosophy. At the same time, he studied in the undergraduate program at the Jewish Theological Semi- nary, majoring in Talmud. He graduated from both institutions in 1961, earning a B.A. from Columbia and a B.H.L. in Talmud from JTS. In June 1961, he married Mira Karp of Buffalo, New York. Lee and Mira spent the 1959–60 academic year at Machon Greenberg (Hayyim Greenberg Institute for Teachers from the Diaspora) and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. From 1961 to 1965, Lee studied in the rabbinical program at the Jewish Theological Seminary with the distinguished rabbis and scholars Saul Lieberman, David Weiss Halivni, Moshe Zucker, and Gerson Cohen. He received his M.H.L. in Talmud in 1963 and rabbinic ordination from JTS in 1965. In 1963, Lee pursued his graduate studies in Jewish and Ancient History at Co- lumbia University with Professors Gerson Cohen and Morton Smith. After receiving his M.A. in 1966, he continued his doctoral studies under the mentorship of Cohen and Smith and was awarded his Ph.D. in 1970. While researching his dissertation on Caesarea under Roman Rule, he spent the 1968–69 academic year at the Institute of Archaeology of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. -

Archaeologists Say They Have Found King Herod's Tomb
Archaeologists say they have found King Herod’s tomb HERODIUM, West Bank – After three and a half decades of scouring this dusty, heat- scorched mountainside, Israeli archaeologists said they have finally found the elusive tomb of King Herod the Great. The location and unique nature of the finds as well as the historical record leave no doubt that the finds are the remains of the king’s burial site, despite there being no inscriptions, said Ehud Netzer, the Hebrew University professor of archaeology who has led the excavations at Herodium since 1972. The dig uncovered the various buildings at the towering cone-shaped site which King Herod, who ruled Judea on behalf of Rome from 37 B.C. to 4 B.C., had constructed. Only one or two other sarcophagi of this monumental size and quality have been discovered, he said. “Not every rich Jewish citizen of the time could afford a sarcophagus like this,” he said. “It is really a royal one. The stone work is very different. It is really an important, well-executed monument. It is a great satisfaction (to have found it.) I am not sure I myself have fully digested it yet.” Because of ancient texts, archaeologists have long known where King Herod was buried, but they had been unsuccessful until now in their search for the actual mausoleum. Over the past three years a team lead by Netzer began circling in on an area on the northeastern slope of the hillside which the ancient king, well-known for his architectural feats, had constructed some nine miles south of Jerusalem in commemoration of a military victory. -

In the modern period, many and diverse explanations of Herod‘s actions have been put forward, but previous approaches have often been hamstrung by inadequate and disproportionate use of either form of evidence. My analysis incorporates both forms while still keeping important criticisms of both in mind. Both forms of evidence, archaeological and historical, have biases, and it is important to consider their nuances and limitations as well as the information they offer. In the first chapter, I describe the most important previous approaches to the person of Herod and evaluate both the theoretical paradigms as well as the methodologies which governed them. -

PALACES AND THE PLANNING OF COMPLEXES IN HEROD’S REALM Ehud Netzer Abstract Analyzing the building projects of Herod the Great leads one to the conclusion that the design of complexes is one of their most distinctive features. This is manifested by the planning, to a high standard, of many of his palaces as complexes, as is the case with most of the temples and entertainment facilities. Herod’s palaces excelled in their great variety. The striking complexes among these palaces are: Masada’s Northern Palace; Jericho’s Third Palace; tentatively, the central palace at Jerusalem; and Greater Hero- dium—the most comprehensive complex. The temples, no doubt, called for initiative in the design of complexes. On one hand are the pagan temple precincts of Sebaste and Caesarea. On the other hand, there is the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem, which featured a complex within a complex—the Inner Temple within the Temple Mount. Jericho’s Hippodrome is a most inspiring complex by itself. However, the inauguration festivities of Caesarea were suffi cient reason to combine the enlarged palace, a hip- podrome and a theatre in a kind of complex. Herod’s sources of inspiration ranged from his predecessors, the Hasmonaeans (e.g. their winter palace complex at Jericho); the Hellenistic architecture in the Eastern Mediterranean (such as at Alexandria and Antioch); the developing Roman architecture—in particular that of Augustus and his milieu (e.g. Forum Iulium and Forum Augustum in Rome); but above all his own ability, based on the combination of a deep understanding in the fi eld of building, profound logic, and a most creative imagination. -
