Thinking about their views and adapting them to my own life, I made myself distinctly less disturbed as well as less disturbable. After I tried several psychotherapy systems-especially psychoanalysis with my clients for the first dozen years of my practice, I found them all woefully inefficient and often iatrogenic. So, I went back to philosophy, welded some of its best elements with experiential and behavioral methods that I had also effectively used on myself, formulated Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), and have kept developing and adding to it for the past forty years. Educational Objectives: (1) To list three reasons why Albert Ellis originated REBT in 1985. (2) To describe four important changes in REBT over the past 40 years. (3) To list four of the differences between REBT and other cognitive-behavior therapies today. Donald Meichenbaum, Ph.D. "The Evolution of a Cognitive-Behavior Therapist" Discussant: William Glasser, M.D. The development of cognitive-behavior therapy parallels major developments in how to conceptualize the role of cognition in psychopathology and behavior change. Dr. Meichenbaum will trace his "personal journey" as a clinician and researcher, noting the altering views of cognition from a behavioral, information processing and constructive narrative perspective. He will examine the therapeutic and research implications of this shift. Educational Objectives: (1) To trace the history of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT). (2) To evaluate the usefulness and implications of a "constructive narrative perspective." (3) To critically evaluate the empirical status of CBT and consider possible future directions. 3 Session 2 MODERATOR: Michael Munion, M.A. Ballroom C Alexander Lowen, M.D. "Bioenergetic Analysis: My Development as a Body-Mind Therapist" Discussant: Judd Marmor, M.D. The split in the modern personality is between the head and the body, between the rational mind and irra tional gut feelings. It reflects the split in this culture between science and the natural forces in life and nature which science attempts to control. The modern individual lives largely in his head and is out of touch with his body because he had deadened it to suppress the fear, the pain and the despair which he experienced in childhood. He may complain of depression, a sense of inner emptiness and a loss of meaning. He has no joy, and life is a struggle for survival. Generally he does not realize this because his energies are devoted to "making it," to achieve success, power, money, fame, etc. These are the values of a narcissistic culture and the modern individual has a narcissistic personality. To work through these problems requires a therapy which is not split, which integrates work on the body with a deep and thorough analysis of the individual's history and behavior. Bioenergetic Analysis aims to be such a therapy. The development of Bioenergetic Analysis reflects my personal development which cannot be separated from my therapeutic work. Two case histories are presented to illustrate the basic dynamics of this approach. Educational Objectives: (1) To describe three facial expressions which express personality attitudes. (2) To describe three qualities of voice which reflect personality.
