Thinking about their views and adapting them to my own life, I made myself distinctly less disturbed as well as less disturbable. After I tried several psychotherapy systems-especially psychoanalysis with my clients for the first dozen years of my practice, I found them all woefully inefficient and often iatrogenic. So, I went back to philosophy, welded some of its best elements with experiential and behavioral methods that I had also effectively used on myself, formulated Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), and have kept developing and adding to it for the past forty years. Educational Objectives: (1) To list three reasons why Albert Ellis originated REBT in 1985. (2) To describe four important changes in REBT over the past 40 years. (3) To list four of the differences between REBT and other cognitive-behavior therapies today. Donald Meichenbaum, Ph.D. "The Evolution of a Cognitive-Behavior Therapist" Discussant: William Glasser, M.D. The development of cognitive-behavior therapy parallels major developments in how to conceptualize the role of cognition in psychopathology and behavior change. Dr. Meichenbaum will trace his "personal journey" as a clinician and researcher, noting the altering views of cognition from a behavioral, information processing and constructive narrative perspective. He will examine the therapeutic and research implications of this shift. Educational Objectives: (1) To trace the history of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT). (2) To evaluate the usefulness and implications of a "constructive narrative perspective." (3) To critically evaluate the empirical status of CBT and consider possible future directions. 3 Session 2 MODERATOR: Michael Munion, M.A. Ballroom C Alexander Lowen, M.D. "Bioenergetic Analysis: My Development as a Body-Mind Therapist" Discussant: Judd Marmor, M.D. The split in the modern personality is between the head and the body, between the rational mind and irra tional gut feelings. It reflects the split in this culture between science and the natural forces in life and nature which science attempts to control. The modern individual lives largely in his head and is out of touch with his body because he had deadened it to suppress the fear, the pain and the despair which he experienced in childhood. He may complain of depression, a sense of inner emptiness and a loss of meaning. He has no joy, and life is a struggle for survival. Generally he does not realize this because his energies are devoted to "making it," to achieve success, power, money, fame, etc. These are the values of a narcissistic culture and the modern individual has a narcissistic personality. To work through these problems requires a therapy which is not split, which integrates work on the body with a deep and thorough analysis of the individual's history and behavior. Bioenergetic Analysis aims to be such a therapy. The development of Bioenergetic Analysis reflects my personal development which cannot be separated from my therapeutic work. Two case histories are presented to illustrate the basic dynamics of this approach. Educational Objectives: (1) To describe three facial expressions which express personality attitudes. (2) To describe three qualities of voice which reflect personality.

Though personal psychotherapy has a long history as a training tool, it is seldom formally required or recommended in programs today. Benefits to the clinician have been widely reported; whether clients benefit is a subject of ongoing debate. It appears that most psychotherapists eventually do enter therapy at some point in their career, but not necessarily in training. The paper attempts to determine what is of value to the trainee therapist and how it can be integrated with the goals of training programs. • Image and Imagination As Therapeutic Support. Know Oneself and Re-Educate Oneself Through Vision †
Proceedings Image and Imagination as Therapeutic Support. Know Oneself and Re-Educate Oneself through Vision † Anna Marotta * and Rossana Netti DAD (Department of Architecture and Design), Politecnico di Torino, 10129 Torino, Italy; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected] † Presented at the International and Interdisciplinary Conference IMMAGINI? Image and Imagination between Representation, Communication, Education and Psychology, Brixen, Italy, 27–28 November 2017. Published: 18 January 2018 Abstract: This research aims to identify and understand the possible approaches in psychological environment, through the images and imaginary as a therapeutic tool. The image is investigated in the film “projection”: this latter is not only intended as a visual projection on the plane of expression, but it is also the projection of the self, implemented by the director and the actors, but also by the spectator, who becomes a participating observer of the story told. An example that combines all these aspects can be identified in Hitchcock’s figure, for his film culture, for the recording technique, but also for his complex psychic characteristics. The critical synthesis of the most significant works of his film production, can be a possible example for the research proposed here. In particular, some elements of vision and representation were privileged in relation to the relationship between image, imaginary and psychological aspects. Keywords: imagination; vision; fantasy; metaphor; therapeutic aid 1. Introduction Mental images, such as dreams, are emerging symbols from the unconscious that can be investigated and understood to modify and enhance the approach to the real world, but also with oneself. To imagine is not always a simple process to put into practice: for some the production may be excessive or disorderly, for other deficient or problematic and moreover the mind may not be able to distinguish reality from fantasy.

  • Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy Boundless
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy Boundless Cognitive Therapy Cognitive therapy seeks to help a client overcome difficulties by identifying and changing dysfunctional thought patterns. 1. fig. 1 shows a group cognitive therapy session Clinicians use therapy sessions to help clients address and change their negative cognitive biases. Cognitive therapy (CT) is one of the therapeutic approaches within the larger group of cognitive behavioral therapies (CBT) and was first expounded by Aaron T. Beck in the 1960s. Cognitive-based therapies have gained increasing use in the past several decades, beginning with the cognitive revolution in 1956. CT is a psychotherapy quite distinct from other mainstream forms such as psychoanalytic or behavioral psychotherapy: rather than focusing on motivations or instincts, it is based on an information-processing model of human behavior and psychopathology. Cognitive distortions, or exaggerated and irrational thoughts, were believed to perpetuate psychological disorders. The process of learning to refute these distortions is called cognitive restructuring. Cognitive therapy may consist of testing a client's assumptions and identifying how client's unquestioned thoughts are distorted, unrealistic and unhelpful. Once these thoughts have been challenged, the client's feelings about the subject matter of those thoughts can be more readily changed.
