One day visit of the Vatican 1/1 01 july 2013 1 Location : Rome, Italy Description When visiting Rome, you cannot miss visiting the Vatican City/State. Whether a Catholic believer or not, The Vatican is definitly one of the Richest spots in the world in terms of Architecture, decoration and art works. Of course, if you are a Chistian, you add to this wealth the spiritual importance of this holy place. You need to count a full day to visit well the Vatican. I strongly recommend to take teh guided tours proposed on the Vatican website (see links in the recommednations) and in any case, you definitly need to buy the tickets online in order to avoid the huge queue before the Museum entrance. I would also recommend avoiding visits on Sundays since the Museum's visit is free, meaning longer queues, and the closure of the Gardens. Ideally, you should arrive a bit before the opening hours of Saint Peter's Basilica, and start the visit from there, than head up to the museum and finish in the gardens. Dress Code is very important, and you should avois wearing shorts, mini-skirts,... since you will be entering inside holy places. As in every highly touristic place with crowds, be carreful for Pick Pockets. Experience a book that documents the greatest engineering achievement of Renaissance Italy Domenico Fontana, Della Trasportatione dell’Obelisco Vaticano. Rome: D. Basa, 1590. 17 1/8 inches x 11 3/8 inches (435 x 289 mm), 216 pages, including 38 engraved plates. One of the first stops for any visitor to Rome is the oval piazza known as St. Peter’s Square. At the very center, against the imposing backdrop of St. Peter’s Basilica, with its huge façade and its famous dome, an obelisk of pink granite from Egypt perches with surprising lightness on the backs of four miniature bronze lions. It is virtually impossible for us now to imagine the Vatican any other way. In 1585, however, not one piece of this spectacular view had yet been set in place. Carved of Aswan granite in the reign of Nebkaure Amenemhet II (1992– 1985 BC), the obelisk originally stood before the monumental gateway to the Temple of the Sun at Heliopolis. It was brought to Rome in 37 AD by the emperor Caligula as one of many tokens of the Roman conquest of Egypt, and was erected in the Circus of Caligula (later the Circus of Nero). In 1585, Pope Sixtus V announced that he would move the obelisk as part of his master plan for the renovation of the city of Rome. Five hundred contenders thronged to the city to present their plans for the feat, but that of Domenico Fontana seemed to promise the most successful results: Fontana’s huge wooden scaffolding, each leg made of four tree trunks bound together, took the full measure of the granite hulk it was designed to move with gentle precision. -

EEXXTTRRAAOORRDDIINNAARRYY JJUUBBIILLEEEE ooff MMEERRCCYY The Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy 2015-2016 Pope Francis, who is moved by the human, social and cultural issues of our times, wished to give the City of Rome and the Universal Church a special and extraordinary Holy Year of Grace, Mercy and Peace. The “Misericordiae VulTus” Bull of indicTion The Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium, which continues to be the programmatic outline for the pontificate of Pope Francis, offers a meaningful expression of the very essence of the Extraordinary Jubilee which was announced on 11 April 2015: “The Church has an endless desire to show mercy, the fruit of its own experience of the power of the Father’s infinite mercy” (EG 24). It is with this desire in mind that we should re-read the Bull of Indiction of the Jubilee, Misericordiae Vultus, in which Pope Fran- cis details the aims of the Holy Year. As we know, the two dates already marked out are 8 December 2015, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, the day of the opening of the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica, and 20 November 2016, the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, which will conclude the Holy Year. Between these two dates a calendar of celebrations will see many different events take place. The Pope wants this Jubilee to be experienced in Rome as well as in local Churches; this brings partic- ular attention to the life of the individual Churches and their needs, so that initiatives are not just additions to the calendar but rather complementary. -

History Sancta Sanctorum The chapel now known as the Sancta Sanctorum was the original private papal chapel of the mediaeval Lateran Palace, and as such was the predecessor of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City. The popes made the Lateran their residence in the early 4th century as soon as the emperor Constantine had built the basilica, but the first reference to a private palace chapel dedicated to St Lawrence is in the entry in the Liber Pontificalis for Pope Stephen III (768-72). Pope Gregory IV (827-44) is recorded as having refitted the papal apartment next to the chapel. The entry for Pope Leo III (795-816) shows the chapel becoming a major store of relics. It describes a chest of cypress wood (arca cypressina) being kept here, containing "many precious relics" used in liturgical processions. The famous full-length icon of Christ Santissimo Salvatore acheropita was one of the treasures, first mentioned in the reign of Pope Stephen II (752-7) but probably executed in the 5th century. The name acheropita is from the Greek acheiropoieta, meaning "made without hands" because its legend alleges that St Luke began painting it and an angel finished it for him. The name of the chapel became the Sancta Sanctorum in the early 13th century because of these relics. Pope Innocent III (1198-1216) provided bronze reliquaries for the heads of SS Peter and Paul which were kept here then (they are now in the basilica), and also a silver-gilt covering for the Acheropita icon. The next pope, Honorius III, executed a major restoration of the chapel. -

Prof. M. Diana Years: 2007 - 2008 The Obelisk was built in 15th centu- ry B.C. and brought by Constantius II to Rome in 357 A.D. It was lost and found again in 1587 and on August 3rd, 1588, according to the project of the architect Domenico Fontana, the Obelisk was raised in San Giovanni in Laterano, strategi- cally one of the most important ar- eas in Rome. Measurements of ambient and traf- fic-induced vibrations on the Obe- lisk were carried out, as part of a general study for preservation ef- forts. The recordings were obtained by the installation of velocimetric sensors on the structure, in differ- ent configurations. Data obtained were analyzed in time and frequency do- main, providing the first structural resonances and the corresponding mode shapes of the Obelisk. The experimental results were also compared with those obtained numerically by means of a finite element model.
