Visits to Tuonela Ne of the Many Mythologies Which Have Had an In
ne of the many mythologies which have had an in fluence on Tolkien's work was the Kalevala, the 22000- line poem recounting the adventures of a group of Fin nish heroes. It has many characteristics peculiar to itself and is quite different from, for example, Greek or Germanic mythology. It would take too long to dis cuss this difference, but the prominent role of women (particularly mothers) throughout the book may be no ted, as well as the fact that the heroes and the style are 'low-brow', as Tolkien described them, as opposed to the 'high-brow' heroes common in other mytholog- les visits to Tuonela (Hades) are fairly frequent; and magic and shape-change- ing play a large part in the epic. Another notable feature which the Kaleva la shares with QS is that it is a collection of separate, but interrelated, tales of heroes, with the central theme of war against Pohjola, the dreary North, running through the whole epic, and individual themes in the separate tales. However, it must be appreciated that QS, despite the many influences clearly traceable behind it, is, as Carpenter reminds us, essentially origin al; influences are subtle, and often similar incidents may occur in both books, but be employed in different circumstances, or be used in QS simply as a ba sis for a tale which Tolkien would elaborate on and change. Ibis is notice able even in the tale of Turin (based on the tale of Kullervo), in which the Finnish influence is strongest. I will give a brief synopsis of the Kullervo tale, to show that although Tolkien used the story, he varied it, added to it, changed its style (which cannot really be appreciated without reading the or iginal ), and moulded it to his own use. -

For many artists and fans, folk metal is more than just music: it is a way of revitalising tradition. Folk metal is then a genre which is closely related to individual‟s cultural identities. As part of popular culture, heavy metal has been investigated for instance in the fields of cultural studies and psychology. Andrew Brown investigates how heavy metal emerged as subject for academic research. Deena Weinstein approaches heavy metal as culture and behaviour that is shared by individuals from different cultural backgrounds. However, subgenres like folk metal have not yet been explored in depth by academics. Analysing folk metal‟s nuances in specific national contexts would provide further knowledge on national cultures and identities. One example of folk metal reflecting elements of national culture is Finnish folk metal. The bands whose works belong to this genre usually draw from Finnish culture to compose their works, which usually feature stories from a variety of traditional sources such as the epic book Kalevala. Such stories are then transposed into new media, disseminating the artists‟ concept of Finnishness. -

Its historic background is the misty age of feud and foray between the people of Kaleva and their more ancient neighbours of Pohjola, possibly the Lapps. Poetically it recounts the long quest of that singular and prolific talisman, the Sampo, and ends upon the first note of Christianity, the introduction of which was completed in the fourteenth century. Heroic but human, its men and women march boldly through the fifty cantos, raiding, drinking, abducting, outwitting, weep- ing, but always active and always at odds with the very perils that confront their countrymen today: the forest, with its savage animals; its myriad lakes and rocks and torrents; wind, fire, and darkness; and the cold.' Swan of Tuonela, Op. 22, No. 2 Jean Sibelius (1865–1957) Written: 1895 Movements: One Style: Romantic Duration: Ten minutes Art is an important means for shaping a people’s national identity. In the nineteenth century, music contributed significantly to the building of nations. For Finland, long under the dominion of either Sweden or Russia, the move began in 1835 when Elias Lönnrot—ironically himself a Swede—published the Finnish national epic, the Kalevala. It was the seed of national identity that eventually led to Finland’s independence from Russia in 1917. Jean Sibelius read the Kalevala as a child. He based his first significant instrumental work, the massive five-movement Kullervo on it. Next, he began an opera based on the Kalevala called The Building of the Boat. He decided that tone poems—instrumental music that tells a story—was much more to his liking, so he abandoned the project Work on the opera didn’t go to waste, however. He included ideas from it in a suite of four tone poems that he began writing in 1894. Once again, Kalevala served as the inspiration. The main character in all four pieces is one of the heroes in the Kalevala, Lemminkäinen. He is a Finnish Don Juan, who abandons his young wife and goes to the island of Saari, where he frolics with the young maidens. Next he goes to Tuonela where he attempts to shoot a swan to win the mistress of the Northland. Instead, he dies—only to be brought back to life by his mother. Describing the nationalist character of the suite, Sibelius said, “I think we Finns ought not to be ashamed to show more pride in ourselves. -
