BAND BIOGRAPHY: The „marcha abinchova“ was first mentioned in a historic document in 893. Nowadays, Ebikon - a municipality in the district of Lucerne, Switzerland - is located on the former settlement area of Ebo, who was a member of the Alemanni tribe. ABINCHOVA was formed in 2005 in a cellar below said village. The only remaining member from the original line-up that is still part of the recent line-up is violinist and vocalist Nora Lang. Starting 2009, the band started playing concerts with new compositions and the first demo „Hörensagen“ was released. From the very beginning, ABINCHOVA focused on being autonomous. That is why they started a concert series called „Rauhnacht“ in Lucerne, and also started working on their debut album. In 2011, the band self-released their debut „Versteckte Pfade“. Numerous live gigs in Switzerland and abroad followed as well as festival shows, including Metalcamp (2011, Slovenia), Metalfest (2012, Switzerland) and Ragnarök Festival (2013). They finalized the recordings for the 7” vinyl single „Handgeschrieben“ with Anna Murphy (Cellar Darling, ex-Eluveitie), who is also from Lucerne, too. The single was released in 2012. Following a successful crowdfunding campaign, ABINCHOVA were able to start producing their second album, along with bassist Manuel Wiget and Tommy Vetterli (Coroner, 69 Chambers) at Vetterli’s New Sound Studio in 2013. The new album „Wegweiser“ was released through the label service SAOL in July 2014. In support of the new album, the band appeared at the MetalDays festival and Munich’s Free & Easy festival. After a few gigs with the Swiss folk metal legends Eluveitie in the past years, additional shows in autumn as a support as well as a part of their Eluveitie & Friends festival, including bands like In Extremo and Blues Pills, followed. During the album production, ABINCHOVA played at the Wacken Open Air due to their participation in the festival’s well-known Metal Battle. In December 2017, ABINCHOVA and Massacre Records decided to team up. The German label will release the new album „Weltenwanderer“ on March 30, 2018. ABINCHOVA will support Eluveitie on 4 dates in Japan ahead of the album release. ALBUM INFOS: „Weltenwanderer“ is the third album of the Swiss melodic death metal band ABINCHOVA and follows the musical path the band started exploring on the previous album „Wegweiser“. The listener can look forward to even heavier riffs und more epic melodies, with ABINCHOVA‘s characteristic instruments - like the violin and keyboard - still being present. You will also get the chance to explore the softer side of the band in songs like „Nachtlied“, where ABINCHOVA offer a glimpse into the previously unknown musical facets of the band. For many artists and fans, folk metal is more than just music: it is a way of revitalising tradition. Folk metal is then a genre which is closely related to individual‟s cultural identities. As part of popular culture, heavy metal has been investigated for instance in the fields of cultural studies and psychology. Andrew Brown investigates how heavy metal emerged as subject for academic research. Deena Weinstein approaches heavy metal as culture and behaviour that is shared by individuals from different cultural backgrounds. However, subgenres like folk metal have not yet been explored in depth by academics. Analysing folk metal‟s nuances in specific national contexts would provide further knowledge on national cultures and identities. One example of folk metal reflecting elements of national culture is Finnish folk metal. The bands whose works belong to this genre usually draw from Finnish culture to compose their works, which usually feature stories from a variety of traditional sources such as the epic book Kalevala. After the industrial revolution (mid 1700s) and the digital revolution (late 1950s) our lives have been significantly improved. People are healthier, communication is easier, transportation is safer and the world is improving and becoming a better place to live. But these improvements have also changed the way we view and enjoy arts. Advancing technology also brought us many new forms of arts like graffiti (spray can), game arts (mobile/ web/ VR), 3D animations (games, movies, VR), sculptures (3D printing), etc. But technology has also shown us, both the better and the worst sides of it. With all these technological advancements people are forgetting old cultures and their art forms. Most people today are more familiar with native ancient traditions of the different cultures of the world, but barely of Europe. The Native American tradition, the tribal religions of Africa, the sophistication of Hindu belief and practice and the more recently revived Japanese tradition, Shinto, are widely acknowledge as the authentic native animistic tradition of their respective areas. In marked contrast, the European native tradition, from the massive civilizations of Greece and Rome to the barley documented tribal systems of the Picts, the Finns and other norther margins of the continent, has seen as having been obliterated totally. The Shrestha 2 people forgotten here, are the Celtic pagans. Their culture was superseded first by Christianity and Islam and, more recently, by post-Christian humanism.

I examine three significant roles – musicians, audiences, and mediators, and focus on the interaction between the localized Chinese metal scene and metal globalization. This thesis project uses multiple methods, including textual analysis, observation, surveys, and in-depth interviews. In this thesis, I illustrate an image of the Chinese metal scene, present the characteristics and the development of metal musicians, fans, and mediators in China, discuss their contributions to scene’s construction, and analyze various internal and external factors that influence the localization of metal in China. After that, I argue that the development and the localization of the metal scene in China goes through three stages, the emerging stage (1988-1996), the underground stage (1997-2005), the indie stage (2006-present), with Chinese characteristics.
