Pacific West Region Overview The (NPS) Pacific West Region (PWR) spans 106 degrees around the globe and includes more than 65 national park sites within the eight states of , Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, , portions of Arizona and Montana and the territories of Guam, American Samoa, as well as the Northern Mariana Islands. With offices in San Francisco, Seattle and Honolulu, the region works to safeguard our national park treasures for the enjoyment of future generations and to share their stories with more than 65 million visitors each year. The Pacific West Region also is instrumental in overseeing a variety of community assistance partnership programs.

PWR is comprised of: 17 National Parks 1 National Seashore 12 National Monuments 1 National Battlefield 10 National Historic Parks 2 National Memorials 10 National Historic Sites 1 National Reserve 7 National Recreation Areas 1 National Historical Reserve 3 National Preserves 3 National Heritage Area 3 National Trails 2 Affiliated Areas

Economic Benefit: In 2017, national parks in Pacific West Region contributed $4.9 billion to local communities. PWR parks hosted 65.5 million visits, which generated $3.3 billion in visitor spending by both local and non-local visitors in areas surrounding parks. The ripple effect of this spending supported 45,744 full time, part time, and temporary jobs in state economies. Every $1 invested by American taxpayers in the National Park Service returns $10 to the U.S. economy.

PWR has a base operating budget of over $300 million (FY18 operating funds), with $2.9 billion (FY18 accumulation) of deferred maintenance. PWR is responsible for operating and maintaining: 6,093 buildings, 420 wastewater systems, 2,180 paved roads, 1,007 housing quarters, 420 water systems, 1,517 unpaved roads, 347 campgrounds, 1,587 trails, and 3,195 other systems (such as utilities, dams, marinas, railroads, constructed waterways, monuments, fortifications, towers, interpretive media and amphitheaters).

Statistics Size: 13.2 million acres of land, which includes 8.2 million acres of , and over 700 miles of shoreline. Staffing: 3,400-4,800 employees (in parks and offices) and 80,195 volunteers in 2018. Wild and Scenic Rivers: More than 200 miles run through PWR parks. National Natural Landmarks (NNL): 100 individual landmarks. National Historic Landmarks (NHL): 249 individual landmarks. National Register of Historic Places: 8,224 sites/properties listed. Every Kid in a Park (EKiP): 82,897 4th graders visited PWR parks for free from September 2017 to August 2018, using their EKiP passes. PWR Concession Contracts: over 60 concessioners provide park visitors with food, drink, lodging and other services that complete a national park experience.

Revised: January 24, 2018

Emergency Services: PWR responded to more than 1,070 Search and Rescue operations, nearly 2,000 Emergency Medical Service calls and more than 900 Motor Vehicle Collisions in 2018. Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance (RTCA): 43 RTCA projects supported community-led natural resource conservation and outdoor recreation projects that improved parks, established trails, improved river access, and protected special places across the region in FY2019. Federal Lands to Parks: Over 345 federal surplus properties have been transferred in this region since ~1956 to state, and local governments creating over 250 public parks, which are protected in perpetuity for public use by deed restrictions enforced by NPS. Historic Preservation Fund: Each year, the fund manages $2.1 million in grants to the historic preservation offices of the Pacific Territories and Freely Associated States of Micronesia to assist with their historic preservation programs and community projects. Land Water Conservation Fund (LWCF): More than $760 million from the LWCF program (the fund invests earnings from offshore oil and gas leasing) has supported grants to state and local governments as well as federal land acquisition in support of the NPS mission across PWR since 1964.

Pacific West Region Networks

Structure and Function There are eight park networks in the Pacific West Region. Park networks are an association of parks in a given geographic area that provides a framework for sharing responsibilities, resources and information. The network organization provides parks with a more efficient way to utilize employee capacity for specialized expertise areas such as human resources, information technology, facilities management, safety, procurement, etc. The network model focuses on collaboration to improve efficiency, and help maintain critical services to parks within the network.

Superintendents of the parks in each network have been working together as the Board of Directors for their network, based on a charter for operation they developed. A superintendent from each network represents the network on the Regional Leadership Council. The regional advisory committees are also made up of representatives from the networks and a superintendent representative from the RLC.

In the Regional Office organization, each Deputy Regional Director is affiliated with a set of networks. Each Deputy Regional Director also supervises certain Regional Office programs.
