This match will be played at home against Shaldon Opt. Our second team who will be playing away will be playing Shaldon’s second team at Shaldon.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who came down to the Club for our Nat West Cricket Day. It was very much appreciated and a great deal of work was done. The Club House is sparkling and the field looks great. All we need now is a season of good weather. Perhaps that is to much to hope for given that we live in Bridestowe and Sourton!!

This year I also have to thank the many local businesses who have kindly agreed to sponsor matches by paying for the cricket balls. This may not sound much but cricket balls are expensive and sponsorship is a great help to a village club like ours. So this is really very much appreciated by the club.

BaSE Page 6 Book Review: 'Mr. Golightly's Holiday' by Salley Vickers

This novel was the subject of lively debate at the March meeting. The central character (Mr. Golightly) is somewhat of an enigma. Why did he come to Calne; what was the best seller he intended to update; what terrible fatal accident befell his son. The answers to these and other questions raised became clear almost straight away to some readers and yet to others only during the last few pages. Mr. Golightly has come to Calne hoping to rest and, despite his best efforts to update his book, there is always some incident which prevents this. The village is awash with characters whose lives seem in many respects to duplicate those of the characters in his book. Salley Vicars has cleverly woven a controversial tale which is amusing and hugely thought provoking. Readers will have to make their own decisions as to whether to be insulted, amused or question, until now, firmly held beliefs. This is a well written book which will certainly keep your interest right to the revealing end. I would certainly recommend this book to others.

"Ne’er cast a clout till May be out" With most phrases and sayings the meaning is well understood but the origin is uncertain. With this one the main interest is the doubt about the meaning! Origin ‘Ne’er cast a clout till May be out’ is an English proverb. The earliest citation is this version of the rhyme from Dr. Thomas Fuller, Gnomologia, 1732, although it probably existed in word-of-mouth form well before that: “Leave not off a Clout Till May be out." Meaning Let’s look first at the ‘cast a clout’ part. The word ‘clout’, although archaic, is straightforward. Since at least the early 15th century ‘clout’ has been used variously to mean ‘a blow to the head’, ‘a clod of earth or (clotted) cream’ or ‘a fragment of cloth, or clothing’. It is the last of these that is meant in ‘cast a clout’. This was spelled variously spelled as clowt, clowte, cloot, clute. Here’s an early example, from the Early English Miscellanies in Prose and Verse, circa 1485: “He had not left an holle clowt, Wherwith to hyde hys body abowte.” So, ‘ne’er cast a clout...’ simply means ‘never discard your [warm winter] clothing...’. ‘till May be out’ part is where the doubt lies. On the face of it this means ‘until the month of May is ended’. There is another interpretation. In England, in May, you can’t miss the Hawthorn. It is an extremely common tree Uses of the hawthorn tree in the English countryside, especially in hedges. As many and timber Hawthorn, or as 200,000 miles of hawthorn hedge were planted in the quickthorn, was the most Parliamentary Enclosure period, between 1750 and 1850. common species used for The name ‘Haw’ derives from ‘hage’, the Old English for hedging during the Eighteenth ‘hedge’. and Nineteenth centuries after The tree gives its beautiful display of flowers in late the parliamentary enclosures. April/early May. It is known as the May Tree and the The timber is hard and tough blossom itself is called May. Using that allusion, ‘till May and was used for veneer and is out’ could mean, ‘until the hawthorn is out [in bloom]’. cabinet work, boxes, tool Other rhymes in which "May" could be the blossom and handles, mill-wheel teeth, not the month are: mallets and the ribs of small "April showers bring forth May flowers." boats. It also makes excellent firewood and charcoal. Over " Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? the ages the haws and Thou art more lovely and more temperate: hawthorn flowers have been Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, used to make a variety of And summer’s lease hath all too short a date. " jellies, wines, liqueurs and (Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18) ketchups. BaSE Page 8 The Hawthorn has long been a potent symbol of rebirth and appears, as May, in other old rhymes; for example, ‘Here we go gathering nuts in May’. That is probably a corruption of ‘here we go gathering knots of May [blossom]’. After all, there are no nuts to collect in England until Autumn - certainly not in May.

Putting the case for the month, as opposed to the flower... A French proverb - ‘En avril, ne te découvre pas d’un fil; en mai, fais ce qui te plaît’. This translates as ‘In April, do not shed a single thread; in May, do as you please’, which has much the same meaning as ‘ne’er cast a clout...’.

Captain John Stevens’s work, ‘A New Spanish and English Dictionary’, published in in 1706, translates a Spanish proverb, as “Do not leave off your Coat till May be past”. Those rhymes may well have originated in England and migrated across the Channel. It is difficult to understand why the Spanish would coin such a proverb, which would seem a little cautious for that part of the world - the average temperature in Seville in May is 20°C. Quite a few correspondents from Spain, and some also from France and Italy, have pointed out a local version of the phrase which goes: ‘Hasta el cuarenta de mayo no te quites el sayo’, i.e. ‘Don’t leave off you coat till May 40th’ There is a homegrown version that supports the ‘month’ theory - a fuller version of the rhyme, which goes: “Button to chin, till May be in, Cast not a clout till May be out” The first line appears to have been added later and can’t be found earlier than the 20th New advertiser century. It clearly refers to the month though, as May blossom can come out, but can hardly HEDGE LAYING be expected to go back in again, which TREE FELLING indicates that whoever coined this additional line thought that way. PRUNING There’s an explicit mention of the month in the version of the rhyme from F. K. Robertson’s Whitby Gazette, 1855: FIREWOOD / The wind at North and East LOGS Was never good for man nor beast So never think to cast a clout Until the month of May be out Wise words for the North Sea-facing Whitby, MINI DIGGER HIRE which can’t match Seville and can be icy cold LANDSCAPING even in mid-summer. All in all, although the May blossom interpretation seems appealing, the ‘May’ in SAM WHITE this proverb is the month of May. CALL: 07515420883

He explained why, in many cases, the patient/relatives were paying when their care should be ’free at the point of need‹ under the National Health Service Act. He offered to assist anyone who is refused NHS long term care funding and he also stressed the importance of obtaining a ’Lasting Power of Attorney' in order to manage the affairs of a relative requiring long term care. He has successfully managed a number of boxes in and around the Bridestowe area for the last 12 months but, as he approaches his 86th birthday, he has decided to pass the role on to someone else.

Debbie Collingwood, Volunteer Coordinator for DAAT, explained, "We are very grateful to David for the help he has offered over the last year. The income from our boxes is vital to our Charity, raising nearly £200,000 in 2011, and we simply couldn't manage without our loyal and committed volunteers. David has even kindly offered to introduce a new volunteer to the outlets he goes to, to ensure a smooth handover. We wish him well for the future." If you, or someone you know, would be able to take over from David, or would like to volunteer for Devon Air Ambulance, please telephone Debbie Collingwood on 01392 466666 ext *122 or email [email protected]

I hope you all enjoyed it, we certainly did. It was our first attempt at doing three nights and well worth it in my opinion. The cast are always a little nervous on opening night but by the time they got to Saturday all the nerves had gone and I thought they put in a very creditable performance. Because of other commitments there will be no summer play this year, but we will return next February with another pantomime. We haven't made a decision as to which one yet but whatever it is, we hope you will come and as always we look forward to seeing you. Thank you once again - the Phoenix Youth Theatre.

Easter Egg Hunt and Coffee Morning Our grateful thanks go to Jenny and Hugh Pratt for hosting the Easter Egg Hunt and Coffee Morning. It was unfortunate that more children were not able to come to enjoy the Easter Egg Hunt in their lovely garden. £115 was raised for general church funds and we are grateful to everyone who supported this event.

Cream Teas The weather was not kind to us on Easter Monday for our Cream Teas so we could not expect walkers and cyclists from The Granite Way and Moor. We are grateful to our regular supporters for braving the elements and to the waitresses and cooks for providing the excellent food. A profit of £169 was raised.

Baptism Rhys, the baby son of Steven and Zoe Foreman was baptised during our family communion service on 15 April. Steven and Zoe who live at Okehampton, were married in Sourton Church and we were honoured that they came back here for this important celebration. It was good to have so many young people with their children in the congregation. We do hope that God will bless the Foreman home with much happiness.

Easter The church looked lovely for Easter and we would like to thank Jackie Hills, her flower arranging helpers and those who provided flowers.

Sourton Annual Parochial Church Meeting Sourton held its APCM on 12 March. With sadness the PCC had to accept Rose Dash's formal resignation as Treasurer. Jackie Hills volunteered and was appointed Acting Treasurer, until a younger candidate could be found. Jenny Pratt will continue her sterling work as Hon Secretary. All other officers were re-elected and PCC members remain the same, apart from Anna Curtis who resigned due to family commitments. No-one wanted to stand as Church Warden. Annual Reports had been circulated; the key point of the Fabric Report was the Quinquennial Inspection by Architect, Robert Platts. Inevitably a long list of repairs must be undertaken. The new gateway into the churchyard, created by Tony Batten and Roger Alford, is a great success and allows access for mini-diggers. They were thanked for their hard work, as was George Heathman, Valerie Long, as Sacristan, and David Hocking the organist and the Flower Arrangers. The PCC are grateful to all those who contribute their time freely to the church, The Treasurer's Report detailed charities supported and the state of the accounts, which were audited by Robert Humphry, to whom a vote of thanks was given. The BaSE Page 31 closing balances at Dec 2011 were: General Fund at £10,329.22 and Restoration Fund at £13,524.07. Although the accounts were relatively healthy, the Treasurer warned that they must be vigilant as costs of church repairs were rising, together with increased Common Fund, electricity and insurance charges. The accounts are displayed in the church porch.
