In the latter part of the 19th century until its closure in the mid 20th century, the line of the Southern Railway skirted the village. Conserving the quality of the built environment 3.38.3 There has been little development in the village over recent years. Traffic calming has been introduced, which as well as slowing traffic on this national route, also adds to the sense of containment of the village. The building stock, with the exception of the idiosyncratic treatment of the inn, is simple and unremarkable and, as with many other villages on the moorland edge, reflects the Devon vernacular.
