BaSE Page 3 News from the Castle Hi everyone,

I have great news to share with you all. Our new main contractor for the major building project has now been appointed. They are called Daedalus and have previously worked on conservation projects at Cliveden House, Clandon and Hampton Court Palace. They are arriving on site on Monday 8 May when the final phase of the project to Save Castle Drogo will begin in earnest. It now feels like we are on the final stretch! Thank you for your thoughts and feedback about the introduction of car park charging in the Castle Drogo car park. Following your suggestions, there will be a short stay option of £2 for 2 hours as well as the £4 all day option. Hopefully this will be welcomed by those who just want to pop in for a short stroll and a cuppa. Don’t forget that car park charges will begin on Monday 26 June and all proceeds will go straight to caring for the Teign Gorge. In other news, our free croquet lessons are back this year. Please pop along on the first Tuesday of the month in June, July and September to get your free croquet lesson from Gabby, our resident croquet expert. No need to book in advance but don’t forget that normal admission applies. And finally… we are working with Plough Arts Centre again this year to host 2 great theatre performances on the croquet lawn. Thomas Hardy’s ‘Far from the Madding Crowd’ by Hotbuckle Productions is on Saturday 24 June, 7-9pm. Then, Boxtree productions will bring ‘Wind in the Willows’ on Thursday 10 August, 5-8pm.

There will be a meeting of Bridestowe Parish Council on Wednesday 12th July at 7.30pm in the Methodist Church committee room. The public are warmly invited to attend and are very welcome to raise matters/ask questions with their parish councillors either at the beginning or at the end of the meeting (for up to 20 minutes). BaSE Page 4 New Play Equipment for Bridestowe Primary School - nearly there! Great news - we have now raised over £8,500 towards the new play area - thank you! Can you help us raise the rest? After all of the old play equipment was condemned and removed last year everyone at school has been tirelessly fundraising so the children can have a new play area. The new area has been designed so that all children at the school are included in imaginative, physical and fun play. It is accessible, adventurous and versatile and we want all children for many years to come to have the chance to enjoy it. If any local individuals or businesses would like to be involved, help with the ground work, sponsor the equipment or generally find out more we would love to hear from you. Interesting words: A bellwether is one that leads or indicates trends; a trendsetter. The term is derived from the Middle English bellewether and refers to the practice of placing a bell around the neck of a castrated ram (a wether) leading his flock of sheep. BaSE Page 5 Bridestowe Queen Bees

The Antiques Call My Bluff Evening held on 25th May was a great success and the Methodist Church was packed. Nick Saintey, Dan Goddard and Chris Hampton from Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood, fine art auctioneers and valuers, were our experts for the evening. They had brought with them an array of items, 10 in all. Each object came under scrutiny with the three experts offering us a different description of it outlining its age and value and provenance. Our task was to decide which was the correct description, A, B or C. It was surprisingly difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff. A rather attractive oil painting of a bird’s nest with primroses was either a) a Far Eastern fake worth £20, b) a fine porcelain plaque by a continental painter £3,000 or c) a Victorian painting by Edmund Hunt £800. Well that turned out to be chaff. A small brass cylinder with an appendage was either a) a culinary device for inserting cream into profiteroles or jam into a doughnut, b) an early prototype for a fire extinguisher or c) a piece of medical equipment for delivering an enema. What a choice and the answer was c. It was all very good-humoured and several in the audience scored highly while some of us only managed 4/10! After the valuation we all went into the hall and enjoyed a very tasty buffet. (Queen Bee members had all brought along the component parts.) Our thanks to the experts who gave their time free of charge and to members who prepared the buffet and cleared away after the feast. Our meeting on 15th June saw the welcome return of Caroline Clarke who gave us a very instructive presentation on posture alignment. Her down to earth, good-humoured approach made the session fun while including some very valuable advice We did several simple exercises, both seated and standing, and gained insight into how to improve our balance - standing up straight with hips aligned with our feet that are slightly apart, is a good starting point. Caroline also scrutinised us individually as we walked the length of the hall and was able to give us pointers on how to improve our gait and so protect our load-bearing joints. The group are keen to invite Caroline to a future meeting. The Garden Party on Saturday 25th looked as though it might be blighted by the weather but the rain stayed away. George Heathman opened the event and there are photographs that record the moment. We sat in the vicarage garden enjoying tea, cakes, scones, sandwiches, sausage rolls - you name it, we ate it. Brian Higbee sang and played his guitar and George H and Margaret G joined him in a song. The cake stall did brisk trade too. All in all a very pleasant, well attended event AND a handsome sum raised. £259 is to go towards the cost of installing the Devon Air Ambulance night landing lights and an equal sum to the Queen Bees. Our thanks to all those who supported this event. The July speaker will be Adrian Brook with a talk entitled ‘Fairgrounds and Roadsides; life as a chaplain with gypsies’. Thursday July 20th at 7.30pm in the Margaret Moore Suite, Bridestowe Village Hall. (Please note new venue) You will notice we have a logo; credit goes to Mavis Padley for her clever design.

Bill Thirtle on 01837 86125 BaSE Page 8 Movie Watch - June 2017 Wonder Woman, Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge, Baywatch, The Mummy, Transformers: The Last Knight, Guardians of the Galaxy, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword and Peppa Pig: My First Cinema Experience. All these doubtless outstanding examples of the cinematic art graced our local screens during June. Maybe it was the glorious weather but sadly none came remotely close to luring me out of the garden and into The New Carlton, although Peppa Pig came closer than many.

So it was that on BaSE copy deadline eve, we scurried into Okehampton to make a belated first cinema appearance of the month. My Cousin Rachel came to our rescue by offering what sounded like a grown-up film, set not on some alien planet hurtling towards oblivion but in Cornwall, which sounded far more appealing. No shouting, no shooting. The film stars Rachel Weisz and Sam Claflin in an adaptation of the 1951 Daphne du Maurier novel of the same name. An earlier film version had featured Olivia de Havilland in the title role. Let’s be positive. For a Saturday evening there was a decent-sized audience who paid attention throughout. If anyone did briefly nod off they had the decency not to snore, while nobody rustled their popcorn. The film is broodingly atmospheric and beautiful to behold. The locations, purporting to be Cornish but actually filmed in South Devon, are exquisite. Swooping aerial cliff-top shots provide a glorious backdrop to the action, although the stunning 15th Century redbrick house, in which the action takes place, is West Horsley Place in Surrey recently inherited, to his reported bewilderment, by broadcaster and journalist Bamber Gascoigne. So that’s all good. Unfortunately though the film rattles along at the pace of Bank Holiday traffic on the A30. It’s painfully slow and the 107-minute running time felt significantly longer. It’s a complex plot to summarise, with many ambiguities, but when his wealthy adoptive cousin Ambrose falls under the spell of Rachel while taking recuperative sun in Florence, orphan Philip (Claflin) suspects foul play. Responding too late to Ambrose’s request, he dashes to Italy only to find his guardian already dead. The young man swears immediate revenge on Rachel, convinced she must have been responsible. Back in though, Rachel confounds Philip’s suspicions, making no claim on Ambrose’s estate, while captivating the young heir with beauty and femininity - both revelations to the callow, gullible and frankly rather gormless, youth. When it eventually comes, the ending is predictable and a bit silly. I’ve not read the book but have to believe it deserves better than this. I shall rectify the omission.

Trailers for future New Carlton titles were rather depressing. Their main upcoming feature would appear to be a film primarily targeting children and not launching until November. I’m sure Paddington, starring Hugh Grant and Hugh Bonneville, will be terrific when it eventually arrives, but surely there must be something worthy of heavyweight promotion before then? My Cousin Rachel will run through at least until the end of June, accompanied by Transformers: The Last Knight and Wonder Woman. Spider-Man: Homecoming arrives in Okehampton on 5th July for a couple of pre-release screenings, presumably having clambered down the front wall of the White Hart. Cars 3 is then scheduled for 21st July, a sure indication that the school holidays will soon be upon us. Otherwise it all looks rather disappointing. We were keen to see the Brian Cox portrayal of Churchill but that will necessitate a trip to , where the film is scheduled to appear at The Wharf, from 7th July.

In fact the trailer provoking the greatest response from Saturday’s New Carlton movie-goers BaSE Page 9 was advertising a screening of Andre Rieu’s 2017 Maastricht Concerts, transmitted live via satellite on 22nd and 23rd July. The hugely popular Dutch violinist, with hair cleverly crafted from a used Brillo Pad, will doubtless fill the Okehampton auditorium with a swaying audience, predominantly comprising ladies in their prime. Unfortunately that weekend I shall mostly be Somewhere Else. David Harrison June 2017

The party will take place inside a barn, but if the British summer astounds us all with at least 3 dry days it will be outside at Leawood. BaSE Page 10 WHAT A FEAST ! The vicar of Lydford and Bridestowe, Rev. Adrian Brook, this year proposed that the Feast Day of Saint Petroc, the patron Saint of Lydford Church (and others), be celebrated by a walk along the historical Lich Way. For centuries from the 1200’s this was the route that those attending services or burials had to travel to Lydford Parish Church. It was often called “The Way of The Dead” for that reason and it winds its way from Bellever across the open northern expanse of Dartmoor, to Lydford, a distance of over 12 miles. At an early stage of planning the vicar sought the help of Paul Brookes, a member and ex -Chairman of Tavistock Ramblers, to ensure the day was properly and safely managed. Paul, in turn, encouraged members of the group to help plan the route in advance and be on hand to assist, for example crossing streams. On the day itself, Sunday 4th June, 60 people gathered in Bellever Forest to receive a blessing from the Rt Revd Nick McKinnel, Bishop of Plymouth. By this time the rain had already started to fall, and looking skyward the Bishop explained that the weather was decided by a higher authority and that his role was strictly sales. Assisted by the Bishop’s blessing and further blessed with typical Dartmoor weather the group headed off with Paul in the lead. The rain, now no longer a shower, did not dampen the collective spirit of the group, but we were grateful that unlike those in past centuries we did not have to carry a coffin! Refreshments of water, this time to drink, and chocolate bars were supplied at Bagga Tor, to sustain us for the last few miles. The careful preparation by Paul and members of Tavistock Ramblers helped the walk go without major mishap. There were, however, 2 small casualties; one was a sprained ankle the other was the Bishop’s boots that barely survived the day. At the end of the walk everyone arrived at the Nicholls Hall in Lydford, where we were generously rewarded with a mouth -watering array of sandwiches and cakes and an endless supply of tea, all prepared by a dedicated team from Lydford and the Church. To mark the achievement of all who participated, certificates, signed by the Bishop, were presented. There was a real buzz in the hall as everyone compared their experiences, chatted to new friends, replaced lost calories and gradually dried out. The Bishop thanked everyone who did the walk, prepared the welcome tea and Paul and the Tavistock Ramblers for overseeing the walk itself. During the day a number of people, despite the weather said they were keen to do more walking. Tavistock Ramblers have a strong local membership and always welcome new members so if anyone is interested they can visit www.tavistockramblers.org.uk for more information. Also since the walk, Paul, who regularly leads walks in the area, will put more details about some of these in the Lydford and Bridestowe Parish magazines. Overall, a special day for everyone. Thanks to everyone who attended or made it possible. If we all do it again next year we hope that Bishop Nick gets new boots beforehand.

Birds are fledging but still reliant on their parents to feed them, young bats are well on the way to becoming fully grown and hedgehog mums will be introducing their young to the world. A time to ensure there is enough food and water for all, so top up your bird feeders, fill up your hedgehog stations and always provide fresh water. Try not to interfere with young animals you may find on the ground, young birds and bats need time to gain their flight muscles. Their parents are likely to be somewhere in the background still feeding them. Just ensure they are out of any immediate harm - cats for example are very good at preying on these juvenile birds so place somewhere safe out of reach of predators. Bats are great indicators of a healthy environment. Sadly like hedgehogs, sparrows, song thrushes and stag beetles, bats are in decline - a worrying thought. These small creatures have big appetites - tiny common pipistrelle bats can eat around 3,000 midges, mosquitoes and other small flies in a single night. Put down your insectides and let nature eliminate your unwanted garden visitors. Let’s help bats by providing gardens rich in insects attracted by pollen and nectar-rich plants (particularly the evening scented plants). Below is a list of plants to encourage night flyers into your garden: buddleia jasmine silver ghost tobacco plant evening primrose hebe verbena heavenly blue globe artichoke honeysuckle bladder campion night scented stock

Try and avoid artificial lighting; bats are nocturnal animals and are adapted to low-light conditions, artificial lighting can be very disturbing to bats and any nocturnal wildlife. You might consider putting up a bat box, an artificial roost designed to encourage bats into areas where there are few roosting sites. There are various designs of bat box from wooden boxes you can make yourself to external ready-assembled boxes and even integrated bat boxes that can be built into walls. Different bat species need different spaces. The ‘Bat Conservation Trusts’ website has great advice on bats; if you find an sick or injured bat call the bat helpline 0345 1300 228. Lisa Butt

Wedding Blessing. We were very pleased to welcome the Simmons family and their friends to Sourton Church for the wedding blessing of Charlotte Baskerville and Chris Heggerud at the end of May. Charlotte is the granddaughter of Liz Simmons and she grew up locally, and attended Boasley School until her parents emigrated to Canada when she was young. We wish Charlotte and Chris every happiness in their future life together.

Ramblers Summer Programme The Lich Way Walk brought many people out onto the Moor for a lengthy walk which all seemed to enjoy, despite the weather! There is nothing unusual about that, but this one purported to have been born in Bridestowe. As it was not a name I had not come across before either through anecdotal evidence or during my research I decided to have a closer look at this soldier. Since the time of the Reformation Sourton had never had a parish priest of its own, it had been known as a chapelry of Bridestowe and the incumbent there had ministered to both parishes. When succeeding Rectors of Bridestowe asked the Bishop of Exeter to be relieved of this dual responsibility Sourton didn’t really have much to offer. There were no rich patrons to help provide a stipend, the church building was in disrepair and there was no accommodation available for a priest and his family. However the request was eventually granted by the Archbishop of Canterbury and in 1889 William Marle was appointed, but he and his wife and baby son had to live in Okehampton. Unfortunately he died of pneumonia after only four years in post. A mixture of long hours, excessive travelling and inclement weather were all cited as reasons for his premature death. Oliver Puckridge accepted the living at Sourton as Marle’s successor. He and his wife Fanny Hewitt had married at Chelmsford a year earlier, but arrived at Sourton from a parish in Exeter later in 1894. There was still nowhere in the parish to live so to begin with they lived somewhere in Bridestowe. Their two eldest sons, Christopher and Geoffrey, were both born there. Meanwhile efforts were being made to find a suitable site for a Parsonage House in Sourton. The two main landowners, the Hamlyns and the Woollocombes, were neither minded to donate land, but once a site was procured work proceeded apace. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the villagers themselves dug the stone at Greep Quarry and hauled it to the builders by horse and cart to help save costs. The Puckridges appear to have been in residence by 1897 because their third son Hugh was born in the parish that year and their only daughter Olive four years later. Unfortunately the 1901 Census only gives their address as the Vicarage, Sourton. An added conundrum occurs in 1902 when the family left Sourton for Pinhoe because Oliver placed a property called Moorside on the market. It was a six bedroomed house set in one and a half acres, with stabling for two horses with extensive views of and Cornwall. Where was this house and why did Oliver need it if he was living in the Vicarage, or were they one and the same? Incidentally although the house was always called the Vicarage and the Incumbent as the Vicar neither was strictly speaking the case. His title was actually Perpetual Curate so the house was a parsonage. All this happened when Hugh Pratt’s great grandfather, Edward Bickersteth, was Bishop of Exeter, so perhaps it was fitting that Hugh should have spent so many years as one of the church wardens at St. Thomas a Beckett. When the Puckridges removed to Pinhoe they probably never thought that it would have been their last move, but they survived until 1943 when they both died within a week of each other. Oliver was still in office at the time of his death aged 85, and both were buried by their son-in-law, also in Holy Orders. He also acted as their executor as both surviving sons were abroad. Christopher Francis Hewitt Puckridge was born at Bridestowe on 31st August 1894. He was educated at Lyme Regis and then Sherborne School. He went up to Clare College, Cambridge in 1913 and at the outbreak of war enlisted in the University and Public Schools Corps, 20th Battalion Royal Fusiliers at Epsom and later at Leatherhead. At the end of his training he was awarded a commission on 23rd May 1915 and posted to 3rd (Reserve) Battalion Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry which at that time was stationed at Freshwater on the Isle of Wight. BaSE Page 17 A Reserve Battalion was essentially a holding unit, giving men further training until they were deemed ready for service at the front. Christopher duly arrived in France on 8th September 1916 and on 12th, along with another ten 2nd Lieutenants joined 7th Battalion at Sandpits, and was allotted to D Company. He didn’t have long to wait for his first taste of action as by 15th they had moved into trenches at Waterlot Farm east of Ginchy. The weather was wet and cold and the men had no greatcoats, but by 4.30 the following morning had to be in place for an attack on the village of Lesboeufs. Unfortunately they were in full view of the enemy and had taken heavy casualties before they had even begun to advance. They reached their first objective and took several prisoners, but as other units failed to do likewise their position was untenable and they eventually had to withdraw under heavy fire. By this time he was the only fit officer left in D Company and had to assume command. His efforts so impressed his C.O. that despite his lack of seniority and experience after three months’ probation he was promoted to Captain and his command made permanent. The winter months were comparatively quiet, spells in the trenches relieved by life at the rear where training of various kinds helped to keep the men fit. A mixture of rain, snow and frost meant that cases of trench foot were prevalent. As spring approached both sides attempted to seize the initiative. On 28th March 7 D.C.L.I. was ordered to attack the village of Ruyaulcourt, starting at 8.15 p.m., shortly after dusk. The advance was led by C and D Companies, but they were halted by impenetrable barbed wire defences which intelligence had failed to report. Strong machine gun and rifle fire caused the attackers to withdraw. It was during this engagement that Captain Puckridge was killed. His Commanding Officer wrote to his parents praising their son’s cheerful courage and disregard of danger. He had recommended him for the Military Cross for his exploits in October 1916, but this was never awarded. He appears to have been buried in the Ytres Communal Cemetery between Bapaume and Cambrai. His men described how they had made a mound and decorated it with flowers before planting an oak cross on it. His parents received a letter from CWGC telling them that a stone had been erected over his grave on Ash Wednesday 1928. We probably forget what a huge, harrowing task it was to recover and re-bury in an orderly fashion so many bodies. That may not have been the end of his story because CWGC records say that he is now buried in the Cemetery Extension, High Wood, Longueval. He is also remembered on the War Memorial at Pinhoe, now part of Exeter. From little things or small places …..

The Lydford Dash, on Saturday 8th July, is a 5 Mile (7.6km) on and off road run across undulating ground incorporating rough fields, rough tracks, two river crossings with stepping stones and a bridge, a gravel track and so on. The race will be taking place alongside the Lydford Summer Fair & Safety on Dartmoor Day held on Lydford Sports Field, 11:00 to 16:00. There will be lots of stalls and events to keep everyone entertained. Registration for the race opens at 11:00am closes at 12:15pm for a prompt 12:30pm start.

I was told by an experienced camper staying at Glebe Park recently that one way of dealing with those pesky midges that plague us on warm summer evenings is to spray exposed skin with Avon’s Skin So Soft Original Dry Oil spray. It seems the insect repellant property is incidental as the product is marketed as a moisturiser. He assured me that the SAS use it and another source backed this up by saying that the Dartmoor Rescue Team members also find it helpful. However it does not deter horseflies. Your local Avon rep should be able to help you get some and it’s very reasonably priced. Well it’s worth a try. I recently attended a ‘Sundial setting’, a new sundial was being placed in a garden but of course they can’t be placed any old how, not if you want them to tell the time that is. A sunny spot was found for the plinth, then the gnomon (the technical word for the sticky up bit) was aligned with true north, and finally the dial (the flat bit) was set level. I soon discovered there was a lot I didn’t know about sundials, I knew they can’t tell the time in the dark but I didn’t know they can be accurate to within three seconds. It had also never occurred to me that they are an hour out in summer because they can’t be put forward when the clocks change. I guess I’m just not from the sundial generation, I am to sundials what today’s teenagers are to phone boxes. As I stood marvelling at the newly set sundial and the ingenuity of our ancestors I realised in a Zen sort of way, that although it needs the sun to shine to tell time it is the shadow cast that points to the hour. It reminded me of a story from when I was at school, back in the days of digital watches, about a boy who lost his shadow. Hands up everyone who jumped around in an effort to lose their shadow when they were a child, even if it was when you thought nobody was looking. Hans Christian Anderson wrote a dark fairy tale about a man who lost his shadow. The shadow in his story represents the hidden, unpleasant side of our character; the part we don’t want people to know about. Eventually the man’s shadow came back and took him over, a fairy tale without the ‘and they all lived happily ever after’ ending. Another shadow story is about the man who was so disturbed by his shadow that he decided to try and lose it. He decided to run away from it but no matter how fast he ran his shadow kept up with him effortlessly. He thought it was because he wasn’t running fast enough so he ran faster and faster until he dropped dead. He failed to realise that if he merely moved into the shade and sat down his shadow would vanish. The moral of the story? Accept yourself as you are, shadow and all. If we don’t have a shadow it means we haven’t felt the sun. Most sundials have mottos written on them, this one said, ‘Let others tell of storms and showers I only tell of sunny hours.’ Adrian Brook

Bridestowe’s Volunteer Group. The group’s first session was abandoned because of heavy rain but the second one went ahead on Saturday 17th June in broiling heat. While some did work in the cemetery others did a litter pick around the village. It’s encouraging to hear that there was surprisingly little litter to pick up. Our next session is planned for Saturday 15th July, at 10am, the idea being we spruce the village up the week before the Ram Roast. We will meet at 10am outside the cemetery gates - there’s plenty of room to park there and it’s shady. All the necessary equipment is provided. If you can spare a couple of hours , do come and join us.

“Spring flew swiftly by, and summer came; and if the village had been beautiful at first, it was now in the full glow and luxuriance of its richness. The great trees, which had looked shrunken and bare in the earlier months, had now burst into strong life and health; and stretching forth their green arms over the thirsty ground, converted open and naked spots into choice nooks, where was a deep and pleasant shade from which to look upon the wide prospect, steeped in sunshine, which lay stretched out beyond. The earth had donned her mantle of brightest green; and shed her richest perfumes abroad. It was the prime and vigour of the year; all things were glad and flourishing.” Charles Dickens, Oliver Twist BaSE Page 22 Events at Okehampton Library

Hole’s Meadow, Saturday 22 July, Sunday 23 July, Sunday 30 July (11am - 5pm). Admission £4.00, children free. Home-made teas.

Hole’s Meadow is a 2 acre hidden garden set within one of the various medieval burgage plots in the village of South Zeal. With fabulous views looking up to Cawsand Beacon, part of the northern edge of Dartmoor National Park, the village lies at its foot. From the village’s main street, the garden is accessed by around a minute’s fairly level walk along a private path, which not being a Right of Way, at all other times is used only by its adjoining residents. No longer ‘belonging’ to a property, the garden is a peaceful secret haven within the village, mainly dedicated to growing many herbs, including since 2013, 2 Plant Heritage National Plant Collections of Monarda (Bergamot, Bee Balm) and Nepeta (Catmint). However, loads of complementary colour and form is found in the accompanying cutting flowers. This is a quirky, different and joyful garden, developed organically since 2001. One of the owners has been passionate about using and growing herbs since the late 1980’s, hence the garden’s bias and the eventual ‘growth’ of the collections, including over 100 forms of each. For example, the Nepeta is contained within an area akin to a more formal herb garden, edged in part with germander, chives and box with triangular beds meeting at the central bed, home to a Eucryphia. Numerous thyme, mint, rosemary, oregano, marjoram and no end of other herbs are planted nearby and are all much enjoyed by the bees in the garden’s apiary. Elsewhere in the garden, you’ll find a small shade garden with the lawn edged by Conifers, Hostas, Acer, Camellia and Rhododendron. Vegetable beds, a large fruit cage, and orchard are also much loved, as are ornamental trees including Magnolia, Catalpa, Liriodendron (Tulip tree) and Gingko. Then over a shallow stream partly edged in Gunnera, to a recent yet to mature coppice of native species, containing mown pathways in between for Hide and Seek heaven. A lovely mural of the view welcomes you to the garden, located adjacent to the buildings which once housed a piggery on the site. Younger visitors have to look out for the fairy house, find the fairies in the mural and then go over the wooden bridges to visit the ‘tepee’ with its circle of child height bench seats in front. Bridestowe Cricket Club Season Update

The cricket season is well under way and we’ve been enjoying some fantastic weather on the long Saturday afternoons down at Millaton ground; as usual everyone is welcome to come down and watch at any time.

The First team have had a great start this year and are currently second in the league with a number of good team performances with one of note, Gary Sizmur making his maiden Saturday century. On this form the team will be pushing for promotion but with a number of games left, there’s still a long way to go.

After a poor start to the season the Seconds are now back to winning ways, scoring lots of runs and are currently fourth in the league.

It’s been encouraging to see regular evening matches and the teams have played well, reaching the finals of both the T20 West Devon league and the Isaac Foot Cup. Unfortunately we had a poor night in the West Devon final when we lost to a strong Lewdown side, having beaten them earlier in the season. On behalf of the teams, I would like to thank the supporters who came to the game on a very hot night. It is good to see the younger players being given opportunities to actively participate in a high standard of cricket in the evening games. Hopefully we will have better luck in the Isaac Foot Cup final! The pitch is looking fantastic at the moment and is a credit to all those who put so many hours tending the pitches and outfield. However we are a bit concerned that we are finding increasing quantities of dog mess left on the pitch and if this does not improve we will have to consider banning dogs from the ground. Please clean up after your dogs if you are using the ground for exercise.

Thanks goes to Dave Dashper and all those involved in the current pavilion improvements which are ongoing and we hope to have a functioning accessible ladies toilet very soon. We are currently organising a date for the annual president’s match, which is always a fun family day to which everyone is welcome-date to be confirmed soon so please look out for an announcement via our Facebook page and in Riverside Stores.

Lifton Singers Hello Readers Apologies for my absence in recent months. We continue to meet and enjoy music with the end of term coming in July ready for the summer break. We have been busy learning a new repertoire of songs, which we performed at a small concert at the end of May at St Mary’s Church in Lifton. There were, also, songs by St Mary’s church choir and oboe and piano music by Leslie and Mary Mazur-Park. A relaxing evening was enjoyed by all. Our next concert is in July at Springfields Residential Home in Bridestowe. We always enjoy our visits to Springfields, where the residents join us in the singing and we join them for tea afterwards.

As always we are looking to welcome both new and returning members. We meet at 7:30 on Wednesday’s (not including the second Wednesday in the month) in Liftondown Methodist Church at the west end of the village of Liftondown on the old road to Launceston. We have soprano, alto, tenor and bass singers and anyone is welcome to join us. We mainly sing easy listening and songs from musicals so if you love singing feel free to come along and try us out. The only criteria is to enjoy singing and there are no auditions. If you would prefer to chat to someone before you come along please feel free to give me a ring. “Music is the universal language of mankind.” Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
