BaSE Page 3 News from the Castle Hi everyone, I have great news to share with you all. Our new main contractor for the major building project has now been appointed. They are called Daedalus and have previously worked on conservation projects at Cliveden House, Clandon and Hampton Court Palace. They are arriving on site on Monday 8 May when the final phase of the project to Save Castle Drogo will begin in earnest. It now feels like we are on the final stretch! Thank you for your thoughts and feedback about the introduction of car park charging in the Castle Drogo car park. Following your suggestions, there will be a short stay option of £2 for 2 hours as well as the £4 all day option. Hopefully this will be welcomed by those who just want to pop in for a short stroll and a cuppa. Don’t forget that car park charges will begin on Monday 26 June and all proceeds will go straight to caring for the Teign Gorge. In other news, our free croquet lessons are back this year. Please pop along on the first Tuesday of the month in June, July and September to get your free croquet lesson from Gabby, our resident croquet expert. No need to book in advance but don’t forget that normal admission applies. And finally… we are working with Plough Arts Centre again this year to host 2 great theatre performances on the croquet lawn. Thomas Hardy’s ‘Far from the Madding Crowd’ by Hotbuckle Productions is on Saturday 24 June, 7-9pm. Then, Boxtree productions will bring ‘Wind in the Willows’ on Thursday 10 August, 5-8pm. Picnics are available to pre-book from the Castle Drogo café and tickets are available from the Plough box office on 01805 624624. Prices: £13 (£11 Conc, £9 Plough Supporters + families with children under 18yrs). We’d love to see you there – please book the sunshine! Take care everyone and see you soon. Paula Community Engagement Officer, Castle Drogo 01647 434130, [email protected] There will be a meeting of Bridestowe Parish Council on Wednesday 12th July at 7.30pm in the Methodist Church committee room. The public are warmly invited to attend and are very welcome to raise matters/ask questions with their parish councillors either at the beginning or at the end of the meeting (for up to 20 minutes). BaSE Page 4 New Play Equipment for Bridestowe Primary School - nearly there! Great news - we have now raised over £8,500 towards the new play area - thank you! Can you help us raise the rest? After all of the old play equipment was condemned and removed last year everyone at school has been tirelessly fundraising so the children can have a new play area. The new area has been designed so that all children at the school are included in imaginative, physical and fun play. It is accessible, adventurous and versatile and we want all children for many years to come to have the chance to enjoy it. If any local individuals or businesses would like to be involved, help with the ground work, sponsor the equipment or generally find out more we would love to hear from you. The term is derived from the Middle English bellewether and refers to the practice of placing a bell around the neck of a castrated ram (a wether) leading his flock of sheep. BaSE Page 5 Bridestowe Queen Bees The Antiques Call My Bluff Evening held on 25th May was a great success and the Methodist Church was packed. Nick Saintey, Dan Goddard and Chris Hampton from Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood, fine art auctioneers and valuers, were our experts for the evening. They had brought with them an array of items, 10 in all. Each object came under scrutiny with the three experts offering us a different description of it outlining its age and value and provenance. Our task was to decide which was the correct description, A, B or C.

A grand total of £1,900 was raised for Village Hall funds and these funds are much needed. We were so lucky with the weather which at one point threatened to break but didn’t, unlike the tug o’ war rope - so glad no one was hurt. Many people contributed to the success of the day with donations for stalls, wood for the fire, raffle prizes, the wonderful marquee, bales and trailer, live music, emergency tables, water and electricity and lots of elbow grease. Wonderful teams set everything up and took it all down again in record time. The Sporting Green was virtually clear by 6.30pm. Finally thank you all for coming along to support the event because without you, there would be no successful event.

  • Drewsteignton Settlement Profile
Drewsteignton September 2019 This settlement profile has been prepared by Dartmoor National Park Authority to provide an overview of key information and issues for the settlement. It has been prepared in consultation with SettlementParish/Town Profile: Councils Drewsteignton and will be updated as necessary. 1 Introduction Drewsteignton, located in the northeast part of the National Park, is set in an elevated position, north of the River Teign. Lying outside the granite mass of the high moor, the area has a complex geology; the working of limestone and metalliferous minerals played an important role in the development of the village. Originally a service centre for the surrounding agricultural community, that role has now declined. Below the village, on the River Teign, lies the popular beauty spot of Fingle Bridge. Castle Drogo, another busy tourist attraction, lies to the south-west of the village. Geological / geomorphological features: Lower Carboniferous, Meldon Shale and Quartzite Formation. The two tors are aligned NE-SW and are separated by a more gently sloping shelf. The higher ridge is formed by the outcrop of massive volcanic agglomerate and tuff. Some of the fragments in the agglomerate are large and are mainly of lava (keratophyre), with some sedimentary fragments. Traces of bedding are visible in the finer-grained tuffs. The dip is about 300 to the NW and the bedding is inverted on the overturned limb of a large fold. Below the agglomerates there is no exposure of rock on the shelf but some fragments of hornfelsed shale occur. The lower tor is formed of porphyritic dolerite with feldspar crystals up to 20 mm long. Some secondary fibrous amphibole can be seen. The dolerite intrudes the rocks of the Meldon Shale and Quartzite Formation. The whole sequence is affected by the thermal metamorphism of the Dartmoor Granite. To the north east [546900] the embankments of the ponds of the old ice works provide a view towards Meldon reservoir. The West Okement river, which is controlled by the NW-SE aligned Prewley Fault in its upper reaches, Can be seen to make a sharp turn to the NE at Vellake corner as a result of river capture.
