    7.6 PREVENTION OF INSURANCE FRAUD Fraud is of course ‘dishonesty’ or ‘cheating’. Since insurance is a process involving a high element of trust, there is ample scope for the dishonest person to take advantage. Insurance fraud may take any of a large number of forms. Usually, we tend to associate the term with dishonest claims, from relatively ‘small’ matters, such as having a cheap watch stolen and saying that it was an expensive one, to elaborate swindles involving arson or faked death certificates. There have even been examples of large life insurance being arranged and then having the person concerned murdered for the insurance money. Fraud, however, may arise at other than the claims level. Obtaining insurance by the deliberate falsification of material information, or knowingly hiding bad features, is equally fraud. Of course, this is a form of breach of utmost good faith (see 3.2 above), but often it is difficult to prove such things later. Although fraud may be committed by anyone involved with insurance (policyholder, insurance intermediary or even the insurer), we shall concentrate on the customary understanding of the proposer or insured seeking an illegal advantage against the insurer. Introduction The globally known term "karoshi" originates in Japan in the 1970s and 1980s (Hosokawa et al., 1982). As is published in the Oxford English Dictionary, karoshi is defined as "death brought on by overwork or job-related exhaustion"(Morioka, 2004). In the long process of economic development toward a wealthy nation, Japanese people have worked so hard as to die. By and large, the same is true for South Korea. Nowadays the South Korean economy ranks 15th in the world by nominal GDP. Even after the acquisition of the OECD membership in 1996, Koreans are still working the longest among OECD-countries, except for Mexico. Korea seems, unfortunately, to follow the path of Japan. Karoshi is no more an exceptional one, but a mass phenomenon in many work societies.

    THE INJURED SELF M ICHAEL K IDRON wo hundred years ago the personal columns of newspapers read by the Tliterate middle class stressed the most general social and personal character- istics of the advertiser and of the prospective respondent. From The Times (London), Tuesday, 15 December, 1801: ‘Gentleman (a Bachelor), about 26 … man of good property, agreeable person, and in an old-established profitable Business … Any Lady (Widow or Spinster) not exceeding 30 years of age’; or, from The Times Wednesday, 28 December, 1803: ‘A Tradesman, in a pleasant part of London wishes to meet with a Partner for Life … an agreeable, prudent Person; a Widow would not be objected to if her age did not much exceed his own which is under 30. Some fortune is expected’. Today the typical advertiser concentrates on his or her singular characteristics, idiosyncratic proclivities, desires, interests, passions, hates and so on, and those of the target reader. Thus, from a recent issue of The New York Review: ‘loving good music, cats, nature’, ‘great listener/ great lover’, ‘seeking non-smoking, dynamic, sensitive, Jewish male 40-55’, ‘gay’, ‘deep feelings for nature and expressionistic art’, ‘socially/environmentally responsible, enjoys long walks, the arts, travel, mountains, skiing’, ‘loves to travel, go for walks, and have good conversations’, ‘attracted to Moroccan pillows’. In two hundred years personal advertisers made the passage from representing themselves in terms of a wider social identity (a lineage or family, an occupation), through presenting themselves as individual personalities, increasingly free of a social dimension, to, finally, presenting themselves as a collection of attributes or characteristics without a unifying principle.
