Northrop Gamma 2A
Northrop Gamma 2A History: John Northrop began work as a garage mechanic with little formal education but, like many of his generation, a fascination with flight. As a mechanic he acquired the experience and knowledge that made him a skilled and innovative designer in later life. He worked for the Loughead Brothers when they started building aeroplanes in California and designed a two seat sports aeroplane for them. A couple of years later he went over to Douglas and was involved in the design of the Douglas World Cruiser before returning to what was then Lockheed where he designed the Lockheed Vega. He wanted to work on more innovative designs but Lockheed didn’t so he moved on. Circumstances saw him involved with a number of companies including, from 1932 to 1937, the Northrop Corporation which was fifty-one per cent owned by Douglas. During that time he designed and built the Northrop Gamma. The Gamma was a continuation of earlier design ideas demonstrated in the Lockheed Vega and the Northrop Alpha, both advanced designs for their time with monoplane wings of multicelular aluminium sheets that were the precursor of the wings of such important designs as the Douglas DC-3 and the Douglas SBD. The Gamma combined that style of wing with a powerful engine and a streamlined metal fuselage. The first Gammas were built to special orders as record breaking and research aeroplanes, later ones included military and commercial versions. In all fifteen versions were finally manufactured, eleven of them with only one being made, a couple with twenty or so and the final version, the 2F of which there were 102, appears to have little in common with its earlier versions and served as a light attack and training aeroplane in the early days of World War II. -

Her father was a railroad attorney, and the family moved around while Amelia was a child. She worked as a nurse’s aide at Spadina Military Hospital in Toronto, Canada, during World War I, and then enrolled as a premedical student at Columbia University in New York. However, her parents then insisted that she move to California where they were living. In California she started taking flying lessons in 1921. With the help of her sister Muriel and her mother, Amy Otis Earhart, she bought her first airplane, a second-hand Kinner Airster, in 1922. After her parents’ divorce, Amelia moved to Boston, Massachusetts, where in 1928 she was selected by her future husband, the publisher George Palmer Putnam, to be the first female passenger on a transatlantic flight. -

These warships are primarily deployed to deter aggression and protect American strategic interests. Should deterrence fail, the carrier’s bombers and attack aircraft engage in vital operations to support other forces. The collection includes the 1940-designed Grumman TBM Avenger of World War II. Also on display is the Douglas A-1 Skyraider, a true workhorse of the 1950s and ‘60s, as well as the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk and Grumman A-6 Intruder, stalwarts of the Vietnam War. Originally built as the TBF by Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation, they were affectionately nicknamed “Turkeys” for their somewhat ungainly appearance. Bomber Torpedo In 1943 Grumman was tasked to build the F6F Hellcat fighter for the Navy. -

US NAVY FLEET AIRCRAFT Updated 11/09/2012 The Wright Brothers, circa 1903 There is evidence that the first powered flight actually occurred at Fairfield, Connecticut on 14 August 1901. Gustave Whitehead (born Gustave A. Weisskopf in 1874), a German immigrant, was the pilot and inventor. Between 1897 and 1901, Gustave made several short flights in a series of improved aircraft. His 1901 flight in #21 traveled about a half mile before reversing course and safely returning to its starting point. A 1902 flight in #22, a seaplane, took off from Long Island Sound and travelled 7-miles before returned to its starting point. Although witnessed, without photographs his accomplishments were disputed. Thus, the Wright brother’s claim may only be the first photographed flight. On 18 January 1911, Eugene Ely (1886 -1911) successfully landed a flying machine aboard USS Pennsylvania while anchored in San Francisco Bay. The temporary flight deck consisted of a wooden platform (30’ x 120’) constructed on the stern of the armored cruiser. The deck was pitched upward 2° and sandbags attached to the arresting wires provided the deceleration necessary to stop the 40 mph flying machine. -

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE The following Report, "Historical Overview of Pearson Airpark," has been prepared for the Vancouver Historical Study Commission, the National Park Service. The objectives for the Report are as follows: A. Provide an independent overview of Pearson Airpark with reference to relevant materials located in the National Archives, the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Military History • Institute at Carlisle, Pennsylvania . B. Assess the national significance of Pearson Airpark with reference to Pearson's historic role in aviation, civil and military. c. Evaluate existing histories materials on Pearson Airpark. D. Comment on the eligibility of Pearson Airpark (historic core) for the National Historical Register with reference to established criteria . • II. This time frurne covers nearly four decades from the flight by Lincoln Beachey in 1905 to the closing of the reserve training program in 1941.
