Abstract: Based on the Interreg Central Europe Territorial cooperation Programme’s CONNECT2CE project the current paper analyses the existing passenger traffic flow across the border which is among the TOP10 busiest border section of the EU. It provides an overview of the main socio-economic characteristic of the peripheral border area and identifies the factors which are leading to the continuous growth of cross-border traffic. Based on previous research and travel surveys it collects the past service attempts offered to tap the growing cross-border travel demand. It also presents the most recent passenger counts and relational (Origin-Destination O-D) ticketing statistic in order to get precise knowledge about the usage level of the existing service which helps to understand the rapidly changing mobility patterns and spatial structure.

  • BARATH Tibor, a Magyar N^Pek Ostortenete, I-III
The Early Hungarians This volume shows to the En glish reader the origin of the Hun garians and their first civilization, — according to recent historical research. In the new light, the Hungari ans seem to have come from the Ancient Near East — Mesopota mia, Egypt and Syria — where the first Higher Civilization flourished. Their westward mov ing tribes reached the Middle Danube basin already in the Neo lithic times and had laid the foun dation of the future Hungary. In the subsequent periods Scythians, Huns and half-Turkised Arpad- Hungarians added their own eth nic and cultural contribution to the existing heritage, whereby the People acquired its final charac teristics by the end of the IXth century A.D. The volume (soft-bound, in-8°, 248 p., 36 ill.) can be ordered by mail, at the address of the Author: P.O. Box 697, Station “B”, Mon treal, Canada, H3B 3K3. About the Author The author of this volume, Tibor- Etienne BARATH, was formerly pro fessor at the Uni versity of Kolozsvar, Hungary (1940-1945), until the communist take-over of his native country. He studied history in Budapest (Ph.D.), Vienna, Paris and Montreal (B. L.S.) and prior to his nomination to the teaching post, he was Secretary of the Hun garian Institute in Paris (1932-1939) and fulfilled the role of Assistant-Secretary of the International Committee of Historical Sciences at the same time. He is now retired in Montreal, Canada. Prof. BARATH is author of over a hundred historical essays and also of several books, the most significant ones being: The Tax-System in Hungary, 1605-1648; History of the Hungarian Historiography, 1867- 1935 (in French); A Short History of Hungary; and the three-volume A Aici’enf History of the Hungarian Peoples with the present sequel The Early Hungar ians (in English).

They were separated from their motherland not only by the frontier, but also by the boundary of the worldwide confrontation, by the so-called 'iron curtain'. The aim of this paper is to highlight the impact of the social-economic proc- esses which have been taking place since 1945, of the change of the economic-political permeability of the Austro-Hungarian border, and the impact of the rise and fall (1989) of the 'iron curtain' on national minorities. Our aim is to present the geographical situation of the minority settlements, the demographic-social structure and the spacial activity of the local population. Izvleček . UDK 911.3 :327.58 (94+439) Madžarska in avstrijska (nemška) manjšina v avstrijsko-madžarskem obmejnem območju Madžarska in avstrijska (nemška) manjšina vzdolž avstrijsko-madžarske meje zavzemata posebno mesto med narodnimi manjšinami v obmejnih območjih.

The Death Marches of Hungarian Jews Through Austria in the Spring of 1945 Eleonore Lappin The Deportations of Hungarian Jews to Austria Deportations of Hungarian Jews to Austria began immediately after Hungary was occupied by the Wehrmacht in March 1944. Together with anti-fascist intellectuals, politicians and public opinion leaders, up to 8,000 Jews were detained.1 These Jewish prisoners included victims of random arrests, as well as influential people from the political, economic and cultural spheres. These prisoners were either interned in Hungarian camps or sent over the Austrian border to the Gestapo prison in the Rossau barracks and to the Arbeitserziehungslager2 of Oberlanzendorf outside Vienna. Some of these prisoners were later transported either to the Mauthausen camp near Linz, or to other concentration camps, such as Bergen-Belsen and Auschwitz.3 1 Hilberg gives the figure of 8,142 Jews; Varga 8,225. See Raul Hilberg, The Destruction of the European Jews, Revised and Definitive Edition, vol. 2 (New York: Holmes & Meier Publishers, Ltd., 1985), pp. 832; Lásló Varga, “Ungarn,” in Wolfgang Benz, ed., Dimension des Voelkermords. Die Zahl der Juedischen Opfer des Nationalsozialismus (Munich: Oldenburg, 1991), p. 341. 2 These “work training camps” were in reality slave labor camps that the Nazis claimed were to train “social misfits” to work. 3 Szabolcs Szita, “Ungarische Zwangsarbeiter in Niederoesterreich (Niederdonau) 1944- 1945,” in Unsere Heimat. Zeitschrift des Vereines fuer Landeskunde von Niederoesterreich, vol. 63/1 (1992), p. 31. In 1945, the Gestapo official Karl Kuenzel, commandant of the Oberlanzendorf labor camp, stated: “With the commotion over Horthy in Hungary, I got 200 Hungarian Jews that were sent to the camp.
