SEPTA Service Adjustments Planned for Multiple Regional Rail Lines Due to Amtrak Track Switch Replacement Project Beginning Sun., Sept Contact: Kristin Mestre-Velez Public Information Manager SEPTA Service Adjustments Planned for Multiple Regional Rail Lines due to Amtrak Track Switch Replacement Project Beginning Sun., Sept. 30 Service Impacts on Cynwyd, Chestnut Hill East, Chestnut Hill West & Trenton Lines PHILADELPHIA, PA (September 28, 2018) --- Starting Sunday, Sept. 30 (9:00 p.m.), Amtrak will begin construction to replace a critical track switch used by both SEPTA and Amtrak trains traveling towards 30 th Street Station. As part of this work, SEPTA’s Cynwyd, Chestnut Hill East, Chestnut Hill West and Trenton Lines will be affected. Service adjustments will be in effect from Sunday, Sept. 30 th through Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2018. Construction will require all SEPTA and Amtrak trains operating to and from 30 th Street Station to use a single, high traffic track. Given the amount of Amtrak and SEPTA service that operates in this area, temporary schedule adjustments will be required to alleviate train congestion within the Amtrak work zone. SEPTA service adjustments are detailed below. Please note: Service information is based on Amtrak construction and is subject to change. Sunday, Sept. 30, 2018 • Late night schedule delays of up to 20 minutes will be in effect on SEPTA’s Chestnut Hill West and Trenton Regional Rail Lines beginning at 9:00 p.m. Customers should visit http://www.septa.org/amtrakswitch/index.html for complete service information. Monday, Oct. 1 through Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2018 • Chestnut Hill East Enhanced: To accommodate customers during construction, Chestnut Hill East Trains will operate with four additional morning and evening trains for customers traveling to and from Center City. All other trains will operate as regularly scheduled. Customers should download the special schedule for complete service information at http://www.septa.org/amtrakswitch/pdf/2018- amtrak-CHE-timetable.pdf • Chestnut Hill West Line: Select morning, mid-day and evening trains will not run. Inbound trains from Chestnut Hill West Station #816 (departing at 6:55 a.m.), #9820 (departing at 8:08 a.m.), #828 (departing at 10:48 a.m.), #830 (departing at 11:45 a.m.), #832 (departing at 12:54 p.m.), #834 (departing at 1:53 p.m.) and #8764 departing at 6:25 p.m.) will not run. Outbound trains from Suburban Station #805 (departing at 5:57 a.m.), #809 (departing at 7:09 am), #819 (departing at 9:43 a.m.), #823 (departing at 10:45 a.m.), #827 (departing at 11:56 a.m.), #829 (departing at 12:55 a.m.), #9837 (departing at 4:12 p.m.) and 7841 (departing at 5:21 p.m.) will not run. -More- • Chestnut Hill West Line Continued: In addition to weekday service adjustments, weekend Chestnut Hill West trains will not run on Saturday, Oct. 6 and Sunday, Oct. 7. The supplemental timetable is available for download at: http://www.septa.org/amtrakswitch/pdf/2018-amtrak-CHW-timetable.pdf As an alternate, customers can use SEPTA’s Chestnut Hill East line. • Cynwyd Line: Temporary shuttle bus service will replace regular train service at Cynwyd, Bala and Wynnefield Stations. Cynwyd Regional Rail Line customers traveling outbound from Center City will take Paoli/Thorndale Line trains to Overbrook Station. At Overbrook Station, customers will need to transfer from trains to shuttle buses to complete their outbound trips to Cynwyd Station. Customers traveling inbound to Center City on the Cynwyd Regional Rail Line will need to board shuttle buses at Cynwyd Station. After departing from Cynwyd Station, the buses will make stops at Bala and Wynnefield Avenue Stations before stopping at Overbrook Station where customers will transfer to Paoli/Thorndale Line trains to complete their inbound trips into Center City. Shuttle bus departure times differ from regularly scheduled train times. The special schedule is available for download at: http://www.septa.org/amtrakswitch/pdf/2018-amtrak-cynwyd-bus-timetable.pdf • Trenton Line: Select morning, late afternoon and evening weekday trains will not run. As an alternate, customers will need to review the special schedule for alternate service options to board trains earlier or later. In addition to morning, late afternoon and evening schedule adjustments, trains #9700 and #9730 will operate at regularly scheduled train times between Trenton and 30 th Street but will not make stops at Suburban or Jefferson Stations. Customers continuing into Center City from trains #9700 and #9730 will disembark from trains at the lower level of 30 th Street Station and go to the upper level mezzanine to take any inbound train. Outbound train #9741 (departing from Suburban Station at 3:51 p.m.) will originate at 30th Street Station and board from the Amtrak Lower Level platform which is accessible via Stairway 9. Saturday and Sunday trains will operate at regularly scheduled train times however; customers may experience in-service delays of up to 15 minutes between North Philadelphia and 30 th Street Stations. Depending on whom you ask, the Main Line always includes the “lower Main Line,”, which is comprised of Ardmore, Bala Cynwyd, Bryn Mawr, Gladwyne, Haverford, Merion, Narberth, Penn Valley and Wynnewood. You may notice my guide has a little more information on the lower (eastern) Main Line as that’s where I grew up and where I chose to raise my own family, so it’s my “stomping grounds”. The upper Main Line lies directly to the west and includes Villanova, Radnor, Wayne, Devon, Berwyn, Paoli and Malvern. I know the neighborhoods, the schools, the shopping areas, the historically significant (or sometimes just quirky and interesting) places and buildings, the shortcuts (you’ll need to know these) and the important places to know about that guide books would never mention. PHMC is charged with implementing federal historic preservation regulations in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, including overseeing the National Register of Historic Places in the state. PHMC reviews all such nominations before forwarding them to the National Park Service for action. As part of the process, PHMC must solicit comments on every National Register nomination from the appropriate local government. The Philadelphia Historical Commission speaks on behalf of the City of Philadelphia in historic preservation matters including the review of National Register nominations. Under federal regulation, the local government not only must provide comments, but must also provide a forum for public comment on nominations. Such a forum is provided during the Philadelphia Historical Commission’s meetings. According to the nomination, Overbrook Garden Apartments is significant in the Area of Community Planning and Development, as a prime example of the large, efficiency apartment building that became a highly desirable form of housing in West Philadelphia during the 1920s. The building is also significant in the Area of Architecture as an important example of the Spanish Colonial Revival style in Philadelphia and representative of a courtyard-type apartment building, a building form that became prevalent in West Philadelphia during the 1920s. The Period of Significance begins in 1928 when construction completed, and ends in 1930 when construction in West Philadelphia slowed due to Great Depression and interest in the Spanish Colonial Revival style waned.
