MEDIA RELEASE 7 September 2015

Dr Kate Lemerle, Psychologist, will be visiting Norfolk Island from 3-17 October providing staff training, workshops for the community, and counselling services. She was here twice earlier this year with two groups of health professionals coming for a week-long retreat helping them learn Mindfulness techniques for looking after their own mental health, and will be bringing the final retreat group for this year in December. “Since coming to Norfolk Island for the first time a year ago, I’ve been struck by the vitality and enthusiasm of everybody living here, and wanted to share this energy with my colleagues”, Dr Kate said. “I’m also aware, though, that there are very limited facilities to support people living here when it comes to staff training and mental health in the community, so I want to give something back by making regular trips from the mainland, as well as build up the retreats I’ve been running here”. Dr Kate will be offering several short workshops for staff at the school, child care centres, and parents of Nissi Doo, and a workshop called “The Art (and Science) of Happiness” which will be open to the community. She will also be available by appointment to see people who want to discuss personal issues affecting their mental wellbeing, either individually or as couples. Dr Kate also provides Life Coaching and is happy to discuss this option during individual consultations, including setting up follow-up sessions via Skype. To remedy this situation, Dr Peter Coyne has collated and published the outcomes of their work in a scientific paper, recently published in the Australian birding journal Corella. The audience enjoyed an illuminating talk about rodent population dynamics, and how different rodent species interact with each other, and with birds and cats. Of particular interest was the dynamic between cats and rats, and which it is more important to control, with the impact on birdlife in mind. We often wonder if the removal or suppression of cats is more important than the removal of rats. According to James’ research there is one clear difference between the impact on birds by cats and by rats. His observations have shown that rats will take eggs and chicks, while cats will prey upon adult birds. All the birds are valuable, but to remove the adult from the equation has a much greater effect, as it could breed again next year. Chicks are (sadly) more dispensable, and so their losses less likely to have such a huge impact on the species’ population. A further revelation is that the rat population is food-limited and will not increase dramatically when the cats are no longer present. The main reason for James’ and Katherine’s visit has been to obtain samples of rodents captured on Pacific Games Reception at Norfolk. His study of rat dispersal throughout the Government House region entails DNA testing of rats to ascertain which After the medal-winning results achieved by the rats have come from where. Some community residents and of course most visitors may not have had the Spring Fair experience. It is a great day. There will be activities for everyone of all ages. Put next Saturday in your diary.

The Spring Fair will be at St Barnabas Chapel and the Parish Centre grounds. Last weekend many hands made light work as they say and a working bee has certainly spruced up the grounds and the buildings. Worth a visit just to admire the church and the centre. This is just a glimpse of the events and activities you can enjoy.

An intersection must meet certain criteria for it to be deemed appropriate for a Stop Sign. The main reason is that it is not safe for a vehicle to merely slow down and roll through. Your wheels must stop moving and your vehicle must be stationary before you can proceed through the intersection.
