    Female Property Ownership and Status in Classical and Hellenistic Sparta Stephen Hodkinson University of Manchester 1. Introduction The image of the liberated Spartiate woman, exempt from (at least some of) the social and behavioral controls which circumscribed the lives of her counterparts in other Greek poleis, has excited or horrified the imagination of commentators both ancient and modern.1 This image of liberation has sometimes carried with it the idea that women in Sparta exercised an unaccustomed influence over both domestic and political affairs.2 The source of that influence is ascribed by certain ancient writers, such as Euripides (Andromache 147-53, 211) and Aristotle (Politics 1269b12-1270a34), to female control over significant amounts of property. The male-centered perspectives of ancient writers, along with the well-known phenomenon of the “Spartan mirage” (the compound of distorted reality and sheer imaginative fiction regarding the character of Spartan society which is reflected in our overwhelmingly non-Spartan sources) mean that we must treat ancient images of women with caution. Nevertheless, ancient perceptions of their position as significant holders of property have been affirmed in recent modern studies.3 The issue at the heart of my paper is to what extent female property-holding really did translate into enhanced status and influence. In Sections 2-4 of this paper I shall approach this question from three main angles. What was the status of female possession of property, and what power did women have directly to manage and make use of their property? What impact did actual or potential ownership of property by Spartiate women have upon their status and influence? And what role did female property-ownership and status, as a collective phenomenon, play within the crisis of Spartiate society? First, however, in view of the inter-disciplinary audience of this volume, it is necessary to a give a brief outline of the historical context of my discussion.

Caprio, 2005 Abstract Elis, Tegea, and Mantinea became members of the Peloponnesian League at its inception in 506, although each had concluded an alliance with Sparta much earlier. The initial arrangement between each city-state and Sparta was reciprocal and membership in the League did not interfere with their individual development. By the fifth century, Elis, Mantinea, and Tegea had created their own symmachies and were continuing to expand within the Peloponnesos. Eventually, the prosperity and growth of these regional symmachies were seen by Sparta as hazardous to its security. Hostilities erupted when Sparta interfered with the intent to dismantle these leagues. Although the dissolution of the allied leagues became an essential factor in the preservation of Sparta's security, it also engendered a rift between its oldest and most important allies.     Q1Q Piracy in the Ancient World: from Minos to Mohammed Philip Charles de Souza University College Thesis submitted for the degree of Ph.D. in History 1992 ABSTRACT This thesis is an historical analysis of the phenomenon of piracy in the ancient world from the Bronze Age to the Arab conquests. It is based on detailed examination and discussion of the ancient sources. There is a short introduction (Part One) which establishes the scope of the enquiry, defmes the subject and surveys modern scholarly literature. Part Two (The Image of Ancient Piracy) consists of a study of the Greek and Latin vocabulary for piracy, and six separate studies of Classical literature, from Homer to the fourth century A.D. These studies analyze the development of the literary image of pirates and piracy, from the ambivalent attitude of the Homeric poems, to the wholly negative presentation of pirates and piracy found in the works of later writers. Part Three (War and Piracy) analyzes the early similarity between warfare and piracy, the gradual emergence of distinctions between the two, warfare as a promoter of piracy, and the involvement of pirates in warfare. Part Four (Trade and Piracy) is an analysis of the relationship between piracy and various forms of trade. The importance of piracy as both a contributor and a threat to long-distance maritime trade is analyzed, as well as the involvement of pirates in the slave trade. The link between trade and the suppression of piracy is also discussed. Part Five (The Suppression of Piracy) examines in detail attempts to suppress piracy from the Classical period to the end of the Roman Empire.

FROM ARCHJLOCHOS TO ALEXANDER By Nicholas Fields ABSTRA CT Xenophon. who marched so many perilous Persian parasangs as a soldier-of-fortune and survived. has probably penned the most exciting, if not the best, memoirs by a mercenary to date. Moreover, for the military historian wishing to inquire into the human as well as the political aspects of hoplite- mercenary service, the Anabasis is the only in depth eye-witness account of an ancient Greek mercenary venture available. Of course the Anabasis is partisan and, at times, the contemporary reader cannot help but think that Xenophon's imagination is running away with him a bit. Nevertheless, his inside view of the complex relationships between mercenary-captains, the employers who employ them, the troops who follow them, the Spartans who use them, and those who mistrust them, has much more than just a passing value. Throughout mercenary history the balance between these groups has always been delicate, and, needless to say, the vicissitudes tend to follow the same pattern. Mercenary service was, and still is, a rather uncertain and dangerous vocation. We only have to read, for example, Colonel Mike bare's Congo memoirs to realise this. Apart from Xenophon himself and the mercenary-poet, Archilochos, the ancient literary sources generally supply little by way of data on such matters as recruitment, conditions of service, and the basic hopes, fears, and habits of those many individual hoplites who took up the mercenary calling as a way of life.

    Appendix A: Source-attributing Words in Context: A Commentary on Book Nine. This appendix aims to test the conclusions advanced in this study about the function of source-attributing words in the Histories upon a large, generally self-contained, section of Herodotos work. Book Nine has been selected for commentary because, although the division of the Histories into nine books postdates Herodotos, Book Nine is substantially a connected narrative of the battles of Plataiai and Mykale with few digressions. These battles occurred less than fifty years before Herodotos began to conduct his researches. Traditions grow and diversify over time. If the function of source-attributing words is to provide evidence of reliable sources with which to settle disputes where different accounts exist, as this study argues, we should expect fewer variant accounts and thus fewer source-attributing words in Book Nine than in the books which deal with the events of the more distant past.   • Ephorus's History
    chapter four Ephorus’s History lthough his work does not survive, Ephorus of Cyme (FGrHist 70) A exerted a large influence on succeeding historians.1 He was appar- ently a prolific writer. The work he is best known for is a History in thirty books (T 1,FF7–96, 201–36). Its title is variously given in our sources in both the singular and the plural, perhaps because the work originally had no title, as the Suda entry appears to indicate (T 1). For ease of reference, I shall follow Strabo (13.3.6ϭT 2) and use the singular. In addition to his History, Ephorus is attested to have written a local history ( Επιωρις λγς ) (FF 1, 97–103), a treatise on style (ΠεριΛ εεως ) (FF 6, 107–8), and an On Inventions (ΠεριΕ υρηµα των) in two books (T 1,FF2–5, 104–6). The Suda indicates that Ephorus’s work also included a work On Virtues and Vices (Περι αγαθω νκαι κακων) in twenty-four books and a Marvels (Παραδων ) in fifteen (T 1). Since neither of these works has left any traces in later sources, it is likely they were later collections of excerpts from Ephorus’s History.2 The fact that later sources were able to draw twenty-four books containing edifying material on virtues and vices and 1.
